      Yeah idk what it is about food words that are so different to other forms of English but as an Australian using American recipes feels like straight up translation. There’s obviously all the measurements but so many of the ingredients and cooking utensils have different words too. Just as I think I’ve got the hang of it another word that I have no idea what it means pops up.

    As an American and a grandmother, cobbler is delicous. You can do it pretty much with any fruit or berry.
    I like peach raspberry. Or apple and if you like raisins or sultanas you can them to apples.
    Or just the most classic plain ol peach cobbler. You can even use canned peaches if they are out of season.

    Oh gods, I relate to Claudia's trailing off too much, but it's usually my ADHD brain hopping onto another subject and forgetting what I was even saying... And then I think I have to say something else to end on, but by the time I think of anything, it's been too long, and it would be weird to say something else!

    OKAY! I'm a Certified Okie (aka, person from Oklahoma whose family has been here since the Great Depression), and, let me tell y'all, we love cobblers. I. Love. Cobblers. I got halfway through the video before the comparisons to crisps gave me a minor stroke, so here I am to explain it in case nobody else has.
    Cobblers have a mostly continuous layer of dough on top of the fruit. The dough can be really cakey, really light, or just straight up American biscuit dough, and imho the type of dough you should use depends on the type of fruit (you can't have just one basic cobbler recipe). Peach and blackberry cobblers are my favorites.
    Crumbles have a crumbled (hence the name) topping of a heavy dough that is broken up over the fruit. I've heard it compared to streusel before. I will never say no to a crumble, but my family prefers cobblers, so I have less strong opinions about them.
    Crisps have an oat topping that will get toasted as it cooks (hence the name). I don't eat them because I have sensory issues with oats (yay neurodiversity!). I have been informed, however, that they are delicious, especially if you like oats.
    There does seem to be internet confusion about which is a crumble and which is a crisp, but that's what I've grown up with. Also, Idk why this crumble is naked. The recipe confuses me, because it also should have the dough and filling recipes separated, and I've never heard of a pear cobbler. Now I want to try one, but I'm perplexed. And Jessica is right, cobblers should be eaten with ice-cream. I would also encourage finding some cobbler recipes that have cinnamon if you're looking at apple or peach, because that makes it extra good!
    So that's a bunch of Southern desert facts that nobody asked for but I felt y'all needed!

    • @KindCountsDeb3773
      @KindCountsDeb3773 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm from the South as well. The crumble was not the main cobbler in our family , but I did think it was sweet crumbles, maybe even brown sugar added to the crumble part, or cinnamon. I know when it's a pie, I heard it referred to as "Dutch apple pie".

    5:07 i always reduce the sugar in my baking as it's nearly always overdoing it, ESPECIALLY with *American recipes* and *ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY* when using sugar replacements, as measure for measure they're a stronger sweetness.

  • @jwb52z9
    @jwb52z9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    American baking is done by volume in some cases and by weight in others. Since the UK measures everything in metric, it's a bit tricky for conversion. 1 cup is equal to roughly 130 grams. That might help you in future, assuming you see this comment. An entire box/container of butter sticks is 454 grams or 1 pound. That means each stick is 4 ounces if you ever need that measurement.

    In a pinch, get a box of white or yellow cake and a large can of pears. Put the pears in the bottom of the baking dish (save the juice), sprinkle the cake mix over the fruit (do not mix!), cut the butter into small pieces and place on top of the cake mix (no mixing). Add about 1/4 cup of milk to the fruit juice, stir and pour over the top (again, do not mix). Bake at 350 F for about 45 minutes. BTW-awesome with peaches, too!
