    Remember folks, while incentives are nice, any time there is something offered for free, it is because you are the product! Put another way, look very carefully at what precisely is left out of the brochures for some of these places. Alaska is cold, remote, and expensive; Hawaii is beautiful, the most expensive place to live in the US, and jobs can be an issue if you do not have one, or bring one. Alabama and Mississippi both have more issues (but are literally dirt cheap), Tulsa and Kansas both have tornadoes and that continental weather, Savannah has that sticky maritime climate, and small towns might be a black hole you cannot escape from if you ever lose said techy or online work (or even worse, no decent internet!). Look before you leap.

      LOL, you get what you don't pay for.

    • @denisefallon3456
      @denisefallon3456 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      try this, different strokes for different folks. What is " perfect" for a person depends on what they need. Would you offer a person sitting on a glacier in subzero weather a snow cone? How about a heater for someone in Arizona in July with 120 degrees? Something that doesn't look like the right thing to you, maybe exactly what someone else needs for reasons you never even thought of Not everyone does things your way. This is why we all have freedom and we all have our own unique brains to find solutions that work with the unique situations we each have..

      Is Alaska really expensive? If so, what and how?

    • @denisefallon3456
      @denisefallon3456 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@nia6849 it is expensive because it costs extra to ship everything there.and sometimes the weather is harsh so you can't ship things at all. there fore things are not as plentiful there. this means you pay more for them

    • @Shalefist
      @Shalefist 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@nia6849 to add to the above poster, very few things are made locally, the weather guarantees high energy and utility bills, travel requires specialized gear, and you'll need to adjust to the requirements of the environment. Like outhouses when freezing pipes makes traditional plumbing useless, for example. Just imagine needing to answer the call at 3am when it's - 30f outside in bear country. Also, Alaska is huge, so a trip anywhere will take time and planning that most states simply don't have to mess with.

    I really enjoy listening/watching your videos about places to live, or not live! I think you do a good enough job describing and listing the pro's and con's of most places. BUT...in this video about paces that will pay you to move there: Newton, IA, I just have to add some more insight to! I have lived in Newton, IA for about 5 years now. At first glance, it is kind of magical looking: Nice parks, community pool, kids riding bikes, or walking unaccompanied by adults everywhere, nice looking vintage downtown square...it's all got a 1950's vibe. This is what I saw and liked about it when I was looking to move my family with 4 kids here. People here are nice enough, like most mid-westerners. But this place has a very SOUTHERN appeal to it, which I found out from some of the locals who welcomed us by driving by our house almost daily for the first year or so with dixie flags strapped to their trucks! My family is interracial. I even had some interesting micro-aggressive questions asked of me from city workers! At least it was micro. Property taxes here are a mystery (why so high for some and low for others with very comparable specs). The elementary school my kids went to (Woodrow Wilson) was like a prison training camp: You must stand outside in the cold weather until precisley 7:30am when they open the doors, there is no talking at lunch time and you can't choose who you sit next to, not even family!!! Mandatory recess time is spent outside no matter the weather! The food served was questionably food at times. I could go on, but I need to address the other issues. The kids you see walking around town all the time are most often latchkey kids, who's parent/s are working or don't care about them (drug addiction) . There is a very unusually high rate of mental illness, and learning disabilities here in Newton, IA. Could it be from all the washed out pesticides from the farm fields that prevail in Iowa? I'm not sure but I wouldn't drink the water from the tap here in Newton, IA (you can taste the chemicals they use to treat it, and that can't be good)! We use a Berkey filter. I really want to leave here as soon as possible! So if there is anybody who likes how this sounds to them, please contact me, I know of a pretty nice house for sale.

      @@OliveDasi No argument here. I appreciate your comments. Frankly, I think that problem is in a lot of places... it all depends on your viewpoint. The truth is, the general environment in the USA has become a place where reasonable discussion has flown out the window. Every person that sees that needs to ask themselves what they are doing to improve the situation, not blaming those that are causing the situation. That's the only way to change things. You can't change others, but you can change yourself. And, from your comments, I'm 99% sure you and I are on opposite sides of this situation, so let's just say I want to move to SD because of Governor Noem, not because I'm Republican. And, as far as division goes, I'm more than happy to have a reasonable, facts based discussion about any issue, including politics. My feelings don't get hurt when someone disagrees with me, so I doubt very much I'd have a problem living in SD. If everyone was like me, discussing rather than arguing, and not taking things personally, there wouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately, people take politics too personally, and can't discuss it without emotion...

      @@michelletidler6773 It actually was an intelligent response. Basically to explain it to you in easy terms (since you need them), FOR ALL YOU KNOW, this person HAS lived there (not willingly). Before you complain, I HAVE lived in two of them and spent a lot of time in the other two. There are 25 reasons not to live in most of these places...no matter how much they give you.

    I haven’t read all the comments so some one may have already addressed this, but as a life long Alaskan I will say the PFD is not a moving incentive. In fact some people in AK have talked about getting rid of it to prevent people moving to AK just for the PFD. Also, the cost of living and heating your home in the winter far outstrips any “benefit” that the PFD provides to new residents. The main reason we have the PFD is to keep Alaskans invested in what happens to our natural resources and hopefully make smart choices regarding those resources.

      I’d still move to Alaska just for the no state income tax; however, the cost of living does give me pause. Do jobs in Alaska at least keep up with the cost of living?

    • @carriesorensen4666
      @carriesorensen4666 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timpoolsbeanie2296 Some jobs do others do not. It depends on how needed your skills are. There are other states without income tax such as Wyoming, Washington, Texas, South Dakota, Nevada, and Florida. Alaska does not a have a state sails tax but some cities/communities do. There are ways to live less expensively in Alaska but that usually requires being 2 or more hours outside any “major” cities. If your living in a popular area like Anchorage, Juneau, Valdez, Palmer, or Fairbanks you will pay more in rent, home prices will be higher, and property taxes will apply. And as I said the cost of heating your home in the winter will be a major expense even if you build new with excellent insulation etc. Another thing to consider is winter. In the southeast they get a ton of rain and in Fairbanks it is routinely -30 deg F in December through February. There is also a lot less sunlight in AK in the winter. During the darkest months there can be as little as 4 hours of daylight and that’s not counting the areas by the arctic circle which are a lot colder and darker. I love Alaska and I think it’s an amazing place to live, but if you don’t like winter activities or the cold it probably isn’t the right fit for you. The main people I would encourage to move to Alaska are outdoorsy people with a love and respect for nature. Obviously not all Alaskans are mountain climbers or super athletes but the people I know that love living here the most routinely get outside even in the coldest months wether that be a walk on the trails, or riding a fat tire bike to work, or snowmobiling out to a family cabin etc. If your just “getting through” winter then you should probably live somewhere with a more temperate climate. I think the winters here are beautiful but they are not for everyone.

    @6:52 it says "North West Arkansas" but the image is of Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas.
    That's not in the Northwest, but in the central, slightly western area, part of the broad swath of _Poverty Parkway,_ I-30 running through the entire state, from Memphis to Texarkana, and extending from there to the western, southern and southeastern state lines. Just so you know.
