  • This video follows a typical day in my life on a smallholding in the west of Ireland, with pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits, cats and a crazy border collie called Moss. There'll be gardening, cooking with home-grown produce, restoration work, and lots of hungry animals to feed. Oh, and not forgetting the inception moment!

@Georg Tolstoj Hello, It is not cynical and not just a way of looking at it, but experience and truth. I am not in the least negating that it may be true about this video-maker and I have thought the same myself, that he may be. I had myself in mind. People ca´n think i am regulated without it being true. And i am not sure ppl even know what (self-)regulation even really is/means.

Are you looking at the same video?
That rabbit tractor is horrible. Its barely the size of a pet rabbit cage /hutch and those are now illegal as permanent housing in many places ( for pet rabbits anyway).
Rabbits need to be able to run (or at least hop forward some distance ), and there was only a single rabbit in each one too , which is just cruel and illegal in several countries also.
Again, for pet rabbits (whose welfare is marginally more regulated than farmed rabbits’) but they are still all treated like they are somehow largely immobile and stupid.
These “lawn mower” rabbits are kept in way too small housing, can’t exercise and are without a partner. They are NOT being kept very well by any standard!
It’s barely better than those super cruel traditional hutches.
If you wouldn’t keep a cat or dog of the same size in it, then you shouldn’t keep a rabbit in it.
These rabbits are kept at the lowest level (aka cruel) of pet rabbit conditions and certainly not especially well or species appropriate . None of their needs are met properly.
If they were pet rabbits it would be considered cruel and inadequate (and the same applies to any other kind of rabbit) .
Please educate yourself before you praise objectively inadequate and cruel (loneliness etc. ) treatment of animals.

To deal with the midges, set up the proper bird houses around your property to make your property attractive to migratory birds like sparrows. A nesting pair of sparrows can eat thousands of midges per day!
Similarly, find out what kind of insect-eating bats are native to the area, and build sleeping/ roosting areas they like.
Your midge problem will be dramatically reduced in time.

Between all the footage you take, figuring out what to keep and what to cut, and how to salvage parts where the audio or video isn't *quite* what you were hoping for, making videos is not as easy as the end product makes it seem. Such an enjoyable video! I'm a bit under the weather at the moment (so frustrating in this glorious weather!) and this video really cheered me up - loved the outtakes at the end, made me laugh out loud and the wisdom in finding joy in life's little victories, not holding out on happiness until x, y or z is achieved. We too have recently moved to the Irish countryside, 100 year old cottage needing a lot of renovation (no idea where or how to start) and an overgrown acre full of promise/overwhelm (depending on my mood) for a productive and biodiverse garden. Thank you for all the inspiration from sharing your life and work and for all the effort that goes in to these really excellent videos!

You’re so right about being present….I also try to do even small things ‘with purpose’, for example, putting the washing out on a lovely warm sunny day; rather than just throwing each piece up whilst thinking about what else I’ve got to do later in the day, I try to be present and really ‘see’ what I’m doing with the pegging out of each piece…..

I love this video, I spent large parts of my summers and winters on my grandmothers farm, helping where it was hard for her and then helping her bake for the farmers market. Both my parents grew up on a farm, (although my mother moved away when she was in middle school) so I know and love how fulfilling this life can be as well as how hard it can be, I wouldn't trade it for the world though. This life is the one I dream of, to return to my roots and live in harmony with the earth.

I have had ducks all my life and this is the first time without them(at the moment!) so lovely watching Patsy, Ducko and Kirtis doing what ducks do best. After many years of work and planning I have long last got my 1/3 acre field now nearly two years on with the kitchen garden growing well. The ducks play an important part as eating pests and their used bedding for great addition to the compost. Love watching your work in progress...

Nice one 👍

    This was SO entertaining!
I just found your channel so am seeing the Irish scenes after the ones in Finland.
I started when you had just moved there.
    Your gardens are just beautiful!
I live in the city in Pennsylvania and started raised beds during Covid.
I always grew tomatoes but wanted more variety.
The cukes do great and the first few years I had fantastic peppers.
The cruciferous vegetables were a disaster and the squashes, although doing okay were eventually rutted out by the deer.
Yours don’t seem to have ANY leaf damage; maybe due to enough rain and those LONG summer days!
We’re light here in June and July until 9pm but it can be drought with SO MUCH watering having to be done.
Then the Brussels sprouts got whitefly and took so long to mature, had all that sticky secretion on them that I just tossed them late August.
The deer started coming and even eat the tomatoes.
Will need to screen everything off if I want veggies.
Yours are so beautiful and plentiful I don’t know how you could have left that beautiful homestead!
I know the reasons and a good partner like yours is invaluable.
    I’ll be watching!
