The colder the water, the colder the air. Heat is energy, it can only go from hot to cold, the water is the heat sink, the colder it is the more eneregy it can absorb. Looking at the design, it is a highly innefficient water cooler, the "filter" is cloth or paper, not exactly thermal conductive materials. Honestly, this one, rather get a portable fan cheaper, and put a mug of cold water in front of it, probably equivalent cooler.
Also, pet peeve of mine, Freon is a brand name of a refrigerant gas. If you are talking generically it is called refrigerant,, Freon simply refers to refrigerants produced by The Chemours company. It is turning common parlance because of R-12 and R-22, both highly efficient refrigerants, but also highly ozone depleting, The latter why the use is discontinued.

I bought it. I don't have air conditioning at my place, and I can't stand sleeping with a big machine working next to me. I got the little artic air and I find it does help cool down my bedroom a bit when the heat is unbearable. It obviously wont replace a big air conditioner that spits out heat through your window, but it makes a nice difference. My only criticism are the lights on it, they can't be turned off and it bugged me when I tried to sleep. But that was easily fixed when I covered them with old birthday cards.

I have this exact model - and yes, the only really bad thing is the USB power port. Micro USB connectors are very easy to break, but the one MAJOR DESIGN FLAW is that the exposed circuitry is WAAAY too close to the open water reservoir. Mine was working great, but then I bumped it slightly - just enough that the water in the bottom sloshed over the wiring and it immediately fried itself. There's absolutely no excuse for putting open circuitry ONE CENTIMETRE from an open tub of water! SMDH.

A legitimate product test would have included a psychrometer to measure entering and leaving dry and wet bulb air temperature, an anemometer to measure the quantity of air handled by the device, and a psychrometric chart to calculate the exact cooling capacity, in Btu's/lb of the device. Google "Psychrometrics", and learn why this thing falls short of claims.

I actually already own this thing. It does work, it is just rather loud and if you intend on leaving it at full blast it will burn through it's supply of water in about 3-5 hours. It is technically a swamp fan. These work better in dry areas than humid areas so if you live in Florida or along the coast don't expect much. Though in my area it has worked even on days near 80% humidity so it isn't entirely a bust if you live in one of those areas, it will just be far less reliable.

I originally got one of these years ago in hopes, not much hope but still hopeful it would cool me down little during the hot summers in my mail truck. (A square metal tin can vehicle with No A.C and just a tiny dusty fan that puts out hot air.) it would work decently for about 5 minutes then turn into a portable heater. I recently put in my garage when I’m working out there and used my old lunch cooler to store ice and let it draw cold air from there. I would also put cold water with ice and stick the filter that I would dampen first in the freezer for a good 10-15 mins. The portable a.c/fan unit is just going to put out the temperature of air it’s drawing in, so try to make it as cold as you can.

I do ac for a living and I can tell you for a fact this will not cool your room down. Maybe a small 1/2 bath but nothing that big. The temperature coming out of the unit is only 67 degrees at the start of the temperature measurement. I can tell you that freon is way colder than just ice in water. Nor does this take the humidity out of the air due to not having cooling coils for the humidity to run across. This is a gimmick. The only way I would know truthfully is to buy one and I’m definitely not doing that. If I had proof maybe I’d make a review. But I don’t think this works.

    - AC is not working
    - Got this thinking it can help keep me cool till the AC can get repaired
    - It wasn't really cool at all
    - I continued being hot, miserable, and a little out of it because I couldn't cool down fast enough to start feeling better
    - Had to start putting ice cubes in it and chilled water to get the air to come out *slightly* cooler
    - Realised that after about every 30 minutes or so, the ice cubes have melted and the water begins to get warm again so I have to get up to get more ice cubes
I've been filling ice cube trays and getting up to get more ice to put in the water in the machine every 30 minutes or so, all day
idk how I'm going to sleep like this when I know it's going to stop keeping me slightly cool after 30 minutes or so of falling asleep
I wouldn't recommend this thing to most people
the only people I would recommend this to are people who live in already cool-ish temputures, people with an unlimited supply of ice cubes or willying to get up and make some all day and continue adding more to the machine, and people who aren't or don't need to be very mobile beyond 2 feet
    I'm still hot
    still miserable
still thinking this is pretty much a waste of money
did I think it was going to work and be as cold as a regular AC? no. but I still expected a little more than this
did I mention I've been having to sit no more than 2 feet away from the thing in order to feel cool?

Texas is a very big state. North and West Texas are probably much drier than coastal Texas. Are you in a humid area. If so, does this product work well without causing a giant mess? If I buy one to use in a humid climate will I be emptying a reservoir every hour? I'm genuinely interested. My room is the hottest room in the house and I'm looking for a better way of cooling it off, than the noisy, stacks of paper destroying fan I'm currently using.

It's an evaporative cooler! Big ones have been used out West for years, but now companies make little plastic ones. They are usually cheap, have no condenser and work by blowing air over a wet screen. And they only work in dry desert climates.
YOUR CAN MAKE YOUR OWN CHEAP EVAPORATIVE COOLER!"; Just put an electric or battery operated fan blowing wind at a damp towel that's hanging 2 or 3 inches in front of the fan (but not laying on the fan due to fire hazard). When the towel starts to dry, dampen it again. The water evaporating off the damp towel makes the air colder! These evaporative coolers don't work on the East Coast where there is more humidity. If your on the East Coast, look for a small portable A/C that has a condenser. If your lucky you may find a portable 12 volt one that can run off of batteries. They are expensive though.

This is just a fan with a water filter insert that looks like coffee filters. For us in NC, where we need to dehumidify and cool, this is no good. We tried it, and it is very weak, we need to take the filters out and soak it first, then put it back in.. It humidifies, which is the opposite of what you'd want in the summer here (this might be great for people who live in a very dry climate). Looking around for a different model, one with a cooling coil.
