They always start with a smoky yellow flame at first. That's because the burner is designed to work on vapor, but until you light and it runs a while it it's not warm enough to vaporize the fuel. That run of pipe that goes above the burner exists to vaporize the fuel and is called the "generator".

Did a Bikecentennial bicycle tour from Mexico to Canada in 1981 and this was the stove (had two) we used. I have one of them I bought from the group after our trip. They are a good group stove. Heavy by today's standards, but rugged. One of our stoves fell off a bicycle in Colorado and impacted on the on one of stubs that support the fold-out feet. The impact punctured the fuel tank. We stopped at a welding shop and the welder brazed the hole shut with some brass. Gave the stove some character...we called that stove 'Pegleg' since the foot would no longer fold. We cooked a lot of meals (probably about 140) on those stoves that summer.

I've got one and it runs great. I'm kind of a stove nut, so I've tried many brands. The Coleman weighs more compared to the newer MSR liquid fuel models but there are no plastic parts in the pump mechanism compared to the MSR. The MSR is a good stove when running right, but with all metal construction, the Coleman is pretty much bullet proof.

I bought one to carry in CO for an elk hunt that was going to be at >9,000 ft elevation in snowy conditions. It worked perfectly for the week that we were out in the woods. I cooked 3 meals a day for myself and a couple of other guys. Never ran out of fuel in that one tank. That was in 1990 or there about. I carried that stove many times on CO elk hunts and hikes on the east coast since then. Works fine and I have it as a backup if the power goes out, but I now pack a propane stove to save 2+ lbs of weight on my back. The white gas just seems to last forever.

It's not for air mixture control. A needle inside restricts the fuel flow through the orifice, as you turn the wire left and right. The generator builds up with carbon deposit internally after many, many uses doing the simmering, and when this happens, remove it and blow torch it to burn out the carbon inside, and reinstall. You will see the carbon flame out to one end, and that is the sign it is good to go.

  • @deador9192
    @deador9192 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I bought my 400A in 1989, and it was my first stove. Still going strong. I had to change the generator once, however, and tighten the nut over the simmer control, as needed.
It works well in a moderate wind, and puts out SOME heat.

Just got out the garage trying to revive mine with a replacement pump gasket. Mine is "Feather 400" which does not have the 2nd control lever, and never did not simmer as well as the 2-control version. But they are great stoves for winter camping/melting snow. Remember that the weight includes the fuel container. My first stove was a Svea 123 as recommended by Colin Fletcher in "The Complete Walker" in ? 1970 ? Good memories.

I bought mine in about 1973 and it's just as good today as the day I bought it. You're right, it's not really a lightweight backpacking stove but with a couple cans of fuel it'd come in hand when the SHTF and there's no electricity or gas.

I was a boy scout in the 70's, we were in the Sierra's in California, above the tree line..above 10k feet, and had three types of stoves in our group.
The Coleman, another white gas ..Optimas? and a small canister type stove. It was cold, in the 30's and we were trying to boil water for dinner.
The only stove that did the job out of the three was the coleman.
It works better when it gets hot but it also has the pump so you can build the pressure and have more control of pressure at higher altitudes. It was the heavier of the thee but it was worth its weight.

Were a real tent burner at altitude ... a very awesome cooker ... can boil 2 litres in 3-4 minutes ... but were inclined to flare when they were hurried in starting. Could do 4-5 days on a tank easily.
The issue with the yellow flame on startup was a lack of pressure and or heat in the generator line ... had to pump my own at least 50-60 pumps after lighting it before going to full fuel ... in the video you went to full fuel too soon as I recall.

  • @wvpok

I bought one similar to this last year at an auction for $5, the Coleman 502. I love this for car camping or day trips with the family. It's more compact then the bigger two burner stoves and more stable then the pocket stoves with the fuel canisters. Plus there's something awesome about using the liquid fuel vs the more modern canister fuels. I wish I had that aluminum case though! Might have to scour the interwebs to find me one. Great video!

    • @kevinfetner7983
      @kevinfetner7983 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Why?? The nylon case works fine and takes up a lot less space. Trying to back that big hunking case in your pack would be ludicrous. I suppose for storage in your home the metal case would be OK.

I bought my Peak 400 in the early 70's, it still works. One thing that really impressed me when I bought it, was when the shop salesman rolled it across the floor of the shop fully lit! try doing that with a Primus stove. They seem very scary using petrol but they are really very safe. If I bought one now I would go with a multi fuel, I've used mine with regular unleaded petrol and it works fine but it will clog up the generator after some time.

The directions on my Peak 1 Feather 400 says to pump it 25 times before lighting then after lit pump it 60 more times. When I do this, the flame is a beautiful blue with no yellow. I used itr today to make some gongfu tea outdoors and it boils water is only a couple of minutes. It's heavy and while I also am not a big fan of white gas, it is a tank and works like a champ. Mine is at least 25 years old and it had been "sleeping" since the turn of the century when I first went overseas. I got it out and it just works.
PS: I have the model 400B and you appear to have a model 400A.

Picked the older brown model up a couple weeks ago for $5.00 with the sack.
Took it apart cleaned it all up the thing is like having a small gas range stove for camping.
I have been using MSR's and canister fuel stoves for years backpacking but now I just motorcycle camp and this is my buddy.
It can be a gas hog when your boiling 1.5 to 2L of water but the extra cleaning valve is what makes this special for simmering or low heat beats the 440 single valve every time.. I have five peak one stoves one Exponent duel fuel and one 550 duel fuel military surplus. I have had a couple dozen of these over the years sold most of them. I also have an old 502 Sportster that looks brand new I would bring that if this died, it to is a perfect simmer stove a bit tubby but what a dream machine for delicate cooking.
You can find these cheap now days as no one want's them if it's $10.00 I will buy it $20.00 if in like new condition.
A true American made timeless work horse.

This video does not demonstrate the proper way to start or run the Peak1 400a stove. The TH-camr who posted this vid PaleoHiker realizes his mistakes in a later video and makes corrections. You start out with the red lever in the down position and open it as the stove generator gets hotter. The Peak1 400a will properly run with a very controlled flame and without the torch-like licking flames we see here. But, hey, this is his Dad's old stove and he got it working. It doesn''t get much cooler than that.

You need to move the lever (clean, high and low) a couple of times back and forth to clean it out. If the flame is yellow then turn the lever down a little until the stove warms up a bit. Just fired mine up for the first time in maybe 15 years too. My pump has seen better days and looks like the whole where you add oil isn't doing anything so I may have to take that piece apart.

I bought mine new and it was white gas only....then later they adapted it to other fuels. On all of Coleman products that use a 'generator', most people waste their money and buy new generators when all they usually need to fix them is take the generator off, and heat with a torch. I use an acetylene plumbing torch. You're foolish to use old fuel like that...especially if it has any varnish odor which I guarantee this one did. It's kinda fussy to use compared to like the old Phoebus white gas stoves but it does simmer VERY well....the old Phoebus stoves will not. I would never backpack with the Peak One because of its size and weight, back in the day, but vehicle camped a lot with it......rather than drag out the big two-burner Coleman stove. Oh yeah, if your pump primer is leather, you can work Neatsfoot oil into the leather with your fingers and it will be like new unless the leather has chaffed away. Automotive and truck seals used to be leather.....they would virtually last forever with reconditioning.

I have an old white gas stove from WW2 and one time my brother told me that it could run on gasoline. Turns out it was NOT the multi-fuel and I had a massive flamethrower after the fuel cap got to hit and failed

That’s a normal yellow flame until it gets the vaporizer gets hot enough to vaporize the fuel going into the burner chamber.

Coleman fuel or a similar type , should do. I wouldn't try out of the pump , white/ unleaded gas. Could ruin the generator.

I have one, used when I was a kid, any tips on refurbishing?

Yes, take the generator off and heat it up with like a plumbing torch...acetylene. Clean out the rest of the stove with a solvent like lacquer thinner. Get the correct size wrenches and put it all back together. I can't even tell you how many lanterns I've rehabbed from the dead.

Sometimes the packing nut on the flame adjustment control needs to be tightened

It is surging. You need to clean out the generator.

It was chugging like an old train. Just needs a little disassembly and a bit of cleaning.

Indestructible, fuel available anywhere, far more energy than compressed gas stoves, works in far lower temps with no loss of effectiveness. The stove for real campers and hikers.
