I ended up finding out my maternal ancestry is Fulbe (Niger w/ ancient ties to NE Africa). It all makes sense; my family always passed the oral history of the women “tackling (restraining) cows/bulls” and too, my maternal ancestors look almost identical to former First Lady Aissa Diori.
