To me, “you wouldn’t get it” is Arthur saying that he no longer desires validation. It’s not that she wouldn’t understand, it’s that he doesn’t care to explain. After all, a joke is never as funny when you have to explain it.

I'm wondering if the movie did enough to show that. I get that the 11:11s could mean that perpetual last day theory but I just don't think many would have seen this movie as a fantasy in joker's head on first watch. There's subtle and there's too subtle.

"Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes I remember it another. If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!"

Like perhaps this whole movie is just a wonky memory. Maybe years of fighting the bat colored his memories to the point he remembers being the one to make him. Perhaps he remembers meeting a young Bruce because he knows Batman's identity and the "familial" relation is his weird way of trying to explain how close he feels to Bruce.

Cinemasins might have started this trend, but it's not their fault. TH-camrs saw that nitpicking and hating on movies brings likes, and that's the lesson they took from it.
This is why I highly value channels like this one, FilmJoy, Lindsey Ellis, Cosmonaut and so on: they criticise with a reason and praise when it's fair, and don't just nitpick for nitpicking's sake

Forgive me if he said this in the video:
I think Joker's rage in this movie comes from depression, loneliness, cruelty and neglect as he states "nobody's civil anymore" and "what do you get when you cross a mentally ill loner with a society that abandons him and treats him like trash?"
Based on his ACTUAL statements and not an observer's PROJECTIONS, he doesn't have an issue with the rich, he has an issue with people who bully and ignore others.

THEY didn't get it. He wasn't acting in their interest or because he wanted to be a symbol. But they made him a symbol. They didn't care that he was mentally ill or what drove him to this, that he hated bullies. All they cared about was what they put him on a pedestal for.

But I remember playing out scenarios in my head of me beating a bully to death with a crowbar and other students applauding me for it. But I told someone, I got help, I got better. I like that the joker's state of being real or not (with in it's own cannon anyway) is a true to the source way of presenting the character. You never know who he is because really he's the Joker and that's it. He doesn't ever tell anyone the truth about how he ended up the way he is and you don't know anything else about him besides the fact he's a criminally insane genious with a long history of fighting batman because he enjoys it. I have no doubt Joker hasn't actually given 110% in the attempt at Batman's life, mainly because Ledger's version states the obvious thing about these characters. I really hope there would be a Joker 2 where they told a completely different "backstory" with a completely differen person, possibly even named as something other than Arthur, hinting at the classic Joker concept of having a past with multiple choices. I believe it would satisfy both Phillips and Phoenix as they can experiment more and also if they could deliver it clear enough it would surprise people who didn't know about this unstable nature of Joker's mind.

Arthur has not met Batman yet. You can tell because he doesn't have his permanent white skin from the ACE Chemical accident that Batman caused. I'm guessing his story was only a little while before the end scene. Arthur was not under heavy restraints and was freely talking to a therapist.
Also, my take on "You wouldn't get it" was basically his way of saying "You aren't going along with my sick joke, so it's time to die." Arthur was looking for someone to confide in that would go along with his sociopathy as the same joke he does. He's done looking in his fantasy world for someone to love him. He controls his world now and will remove anyone he doesn't like anymore from his life without a second thought.

from a certain perspective Joker is a social commentary about the way people with mental health issues are perceived by society and the idea of what could happen if they weren't given the correct care and treatment they need, this could result in the creation of a real life Joker

This movie isn't about politics, it's about what it's like to be insecure. When he gets threatened everyone he goes to for help lets him down, so he can either be destroyed, or destroy the threat. It resonates because everyone is insecure, and sometimes lashes out, but not appealing because it sucks, and he sucks. Lashing out isn't rational revenge, it's hurting people to make you feel strong and secure. 10/10 would analyse again.

I understand the argument that Joker will not cause violence or shootings, I agree with it. But I feel the need to explain why theaters in my hometown (Aurora) refused to show the Joker in theaters. It’s not because we were worried that it would cause more violence but rather out of compassion for the survivors and families of the victims of the theater shooting in Aurora. The movie that was playing during the shooting was the Dark Knight and the theaters in Aurora just didn’t want to be insensitive. Despite this many of the articles that covered Aurora refusing to show Joker focused on the angle that other people pushed about Joker ensuing violence rather than the actual reasoning.

I see this movie as a good movie. It points out a good joker! The Unreliable Narrator trope is perfectly used! It also points of mental illness! It’s funny people try to use Joker as a violence inspirer when it’s actually yelling and teaching people of what could happen if we treat each other bad. Arthur is human and there are Arthur’s all around us. We should be using Joker as a lesson not a threat. If there’s message of this movie is that anyone can be capable of violence but we can’t push them to do it we need to show love and admiration. Not bring them down. Arthur is a good guy maybe he’s weird but he loves laughter and he loved his job because he was free. But we don’t know cause the joker tells us the story. My point is we don’t know who or what issues other people have we have to treat people nicely.

My most fundamental problem with this movie is that Arthur Fleck isn’t The Joker. Even at the end of the movie Fleck isn’t The Joker. Fleck makes practically every decision entirely in the spur of the moment and spends all his time reacting to external stimuli and even the henchmen he’s gathered he got accidentally and all his successes are purely by chance with the person of Fleck having nothing to do with it at all.
How would Fleck deal with Batman if Batman were to threaten to take him down? How much of a threat is Fleck at all that Batman would feel the need to take him down? Fleck’s mobs sure but Fleck himself? Don’t make me laugh.
But assuming that Batman did try to take down Fleck how would Fleck try to stop him?
Jared Leto and Heath Ledger played version of The Joker who were able to solve their problems by manipulating others because of how well they understood people. That wouldn’t be the case for Fleck since he wouldn’t be able to predict anyone’s behaviour since he doesn’t know people.
Could he take over the underworld like Jack Napier could? No.
Cesar Romero’s The Joker came up with concrete plans to battle Batman and to tie up loose ends all the time.
Could Fleck approximate any of those? No. He couldn’t. Arthur Fleck is not a character who could work as an antagonist for Batman. Let alone Batman’s nemesis.

I read somewhere a really compelling theory to the ending. Basically, if you look again, Arthur in the Asylum looks older than he does when he is arrested. The hair dye is gone, he has some facial hair, his fingers have burns from cigs, so on. The theory is that this Joker has already had altercations with the Bat and has been put in the Asylum so many times because of him. When he is “thinking of a joke” that the lady wouldn’t get, and it cuts to baby Bruce with his dead parents, it isn’t Arthur fantasizing about him creating Batman. It’s him finally realizing who Batman is. Finally finding out his identity. Thats why it’s so funny to him. Because he met him before, and he was supposedly his half brother. Because this little kid he thought was insignificant grew to be his greatest rival. It’s why he is so happy to escape again. Not because he wants to go get his ass kicked back into the Asylum, but because he now wants to have fun knowing finally who the Bat is. Knowing he can toy with him all he wants. Thats why “Thats Life” is what plays in his head. A sort of “well, shit, it was always him. Thats life I guess”.

I think in the JOKER universe, Arthur Fleck is not the comic book joker that we know. Because the age gap just doesn't make sense. Arthur is at least in his late 30s (even though it looks he may be in his 40s), and bruce is only in his early teens. Also, aging doesn't make sense. I don't think he looks much aged than the other scenes. Even if it's been 5 years, still bruce should be a late teen, which doesn't work out.

I've always thought a lot about that last exchange: "you wouldn't get it"
So, during the entirety of the movie, Arthur tries to express his pain. How does he do that? He does that through (what he believes is) comedy. The jokes he writes, the things he says to his first therapist, he TRIES to tell people what he's feeling, he's reaching out.
No one hears or helps him, though.
And that's why the last line hits me; I feel like it's the saddest line in the whole movie, because it shows that he's given up. He's embraced his Joker persona, sure, but that persona was born because no one saw him, no one listened to him, no one cared, meaning no one ever listened or cared about his "jokes". So he gives up. He just stops telling them, because society "doesn't get it".
It may be a meme, but I think it's so sadly powerful.

The thing I like is the end title, when it says “the end” (6:07)
It’s small and gracefully written, completely different from the start when it’s big and bold and in our faces.
It could mean that at the beginning- having the title so big- shows how much Arthur wants to be seen and heard; then having it- the title- so small and simple,at the end, shows us that the Arther no longer wants to be in our faces bc he doesn’t need our validation.
    Or..
When I first saw this movie the huge title “JOKER” completely hurt my eyes- this relates to the joker, A man who dresses like a clown and kills people- it’s crazy and weird. Then at the end the title is written small and gracefully and not sticking out like a sore thumb- like the joker to us. We understand this man and we get where he is coming from and we understand his motives which is why we aren’t shocked by his actions
Or I’m reading way too much into this, so if u made it this far thanks :)

      @imlivingunderyourbed7845 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I kinda like the first interpretation more. Having such big fonts shoved at your eyes like that would be pretty unappealing, which is just like how society would degrade Arthur for trying to stand out and get their attention. He wouldn't have been bullied by those kids in the beginning if he wasn't dressed like a clown and dancing all silly; the same as how the JOKER title wouldn't be unappealing if it wasn't so big and bold.
And the smooth cursive of "The end" would reflect how Joker no longer cares about being noticed and now only cares about having fun with his "jokes".

KanitoKawaii all the news articles throughout this movie makes a statement about how the media twists the truth and sensationalizes things to make money, but as a result ends up fanning the flames and making things worse, leading to riots and famous villains. Then when the movie comes out, life imitates art!!
