Watching this in 2023 and your comments on competing with yourself vs others resonated with me so much! I can remember being a kid and having big goals, then being completely discouraged when someone else achieved the same thing first. I have no idea where that pressure came from but it’s been a lifetime of reminding myself to step back and just enjoy a thing.
I just found your TH-cam channel yesterday and I have fallen in love with you. Not only are you an inspiration to me, your personality is so refreshing. I am 69 yrs old. I have a spinning wheel, a 4 shaft loom, a ridged heddle loom, all the equipment to process fiber, fleece from my alpacas, rabbits and baby doll sheep and although I’ve had the equipment since 2013, I’ve barely used it. I’ve recently decided to try to get back into fiber and you have totally inspired me. Thank you for being you.
I loved watching you on the Elizabeth double drive, it’s such a gorgeous wheel. A couple of weeks ago, I was asked ‘Do you want an old Ashford wheel to see if you can fix it up?’ by a total stranger after a short chat about spinning. Naturally I said yes, especially as my hybrid 1960’s, 80’s, 00’s Traditional is getting creakier by the fleece. I grabbed the dirty, dusty donated wheel and scurried home with her before there was any change of mind. A wonderful surprise! She’s a 1982 Traditional Double Drive!! 😍 A good clean & wax, new conrod & scotch tension, and she’s as good as new. Smooth & silent, even after years in a garden shed. After 20 years of spinning superfine on a single drive, I was blown away at how fast the double drive is - I ended up with overtwist for the first time ever! 😳 Now I’ve got to re-train my treadling foot to *not* go hell for leather 😆 I’ll be keeping my old hybrid for plying - after all these years of faithful service I couldn’t bear to banish her to the corner.🥰☺️
I just love how uplifting you are! You're really good at being real at acknowledging some of the hard things we all want to ignore, and instead of just ignoring or pushing them away, you work with them and build up from them. And it's not just in this video. You truly are an inspiration, Evie! Also, your husband reminds me so much of mine! It was so funny!!! So proud you pushed through and made some amazing tings happen!
OMG!!! 7:18 I had to call my boyfriend in, he loves foxes and I made him pillow cases and will be making him curtains out of that exact fox fabric your shirt/dress/top is made out of I was so excited when I saw it lol
Seeing your silk disaster made my heart drop and jump with excitement at the same time. It dropped because i have the same mishaps everytime i try silk on a wheel. It jumped in joy because i don't feel alone with the 'oh man' heartaches. I haven't tried a spindle yet, but i have pf's sept kit to try with 😁
I turn on your videos and let them autoplay because they're just comforting videos... Every time this one comes on, it makes my day 😂 pure chaos. I can feel the burn in your arm from on the screen. 😂😂 Poor Elizabeth was run ragged. She'll need at least one joint replaced.
It is mesmerizing to watch you spin....have always wanted a wheel....now I'm so old, don't think my arthritis would let me hold the fibers......so will watch you and get a laugh with you and Mark. ♥️🌺🌸😗
I don't compete with anyone on anything, just because my goals are to produce wool and yarn for myself and my family. I want quality over quantity at all times in everything. Always enjoy your videos and appreciate them.
Just when I thought I couldn’t love you more you did that giggle pointing out this pattern is simple from Simplicity. Now I want to sit and spin with you while we tell each other dad jokes.
I loved watching you spin the pink silk and watching it almost disappear as it came out of the fold and through your fingers. This hobby is like doing magic tricks
i just completed ANOTHER spinning wheel (from junk/scrap) this one has an old sewing machine motor and a light dimmer switch to keep it nice and slow... lol. its using a wedge tensions on it's bobbin, and i, honestly, couldn't be prouder!!! also, i saw multiple spinning wheels for sale near me, under $100; it's taking such meditation to not run and buy them all.
We all fall into the comparison thing and it is as someone said--- Comparison is the thief of joy. I believe this and try hard to remind myself that spinning is for my enjoyment and not for winning some title. Getting better and faster and learning more techniques is great. I agree I only need to compete with what I have done in the past. Blessings.
Hi Evie, hope you're OK xx 😘 Just seen your Post of Pictures of your Yarns for the Spin Together. Myself and another person have left comments under the Picture but our comments are being shown. Congratulations on the Amount of Yarn you Spun for the Spin Together ❤👏 Happy Spinning. Take care and stay safe. Lots of love Jen 💘xx 💘😘❤💖💕♥🐏🎆
I loved your bit about competing with yourself. I grew up watching James Coburn in The Magnificent Seven movie, he was the best shot and knife thrower around, but he competed with himself and I always loved that idea...thanks for bringing that idea to me for my spinning....
Glad to know I wasn't the only one that got a little frantic when things went wrong. Glad to know it mostly worked out though. Good luck with that silk tangle.
You and Mark are so great together, I like how he supports and encourages you and the jokes crack me up! Loved the spinning but the best part is the two of you! I’ll be interested to hear how many miles of yarn you spun and if you need help untangling that ball of silk, I’m happy to offer assistance lol. I actually like doing things like that 😁🤷🏻♀️
Thank you! I'm untangling the silk a little each day. I think I'll get it sorted out before I have to turn in my yardage count on Wednesday. Fingers crossed! 💜🧶🐑
Thank you! I should have been further away from the CPW so I didn't have to hold it like that, but I didn't have time to move my no slip mat on the floor! Lol! It was fun! 💜🧶🐑
I am so glad you joined us for Spin Together! Your yarn looks beautiful! Regarding that silk skein, you can still count the singles even if you have to cut the skein to get it apart
Thank you so much! It was great fun! I'm working on getting that silk untangled and I'll count it as a single. Hopefully I'll finish untangling it by the deadline. I can't count the yardage of a lump. 😅
Hey Evie! You did such an amazing job, as usual! Thank you for talking about how we compare ourselves to others. That has always been such an issue for me for so many reasons but am working on improving! You really are a light in my life and thank you so much for inspiring and teaching me and others around the world! Much love fiber friend!!
I just finished 1oz of Polwarth from the breed study……. I LOVE IT! Wait a moment…. You did all that spinning AND filmed it all? Whoa… big props to you!
Yes Polworth!!! 🐑 Thank you! I'm loving having a studio space that I don't have to clean up every time my family wants to eat dinner. It's much more efficient! 🧶💜🐑😊
I always tell my kids that they should only compete with themselves... compare themselves to their earlier selves and see if they are better than they were before. I have identical twin boys... so this is a challenge for them to be unique from each other! You spin beautifully by the way and with your skills and all of your equipment, I get a bit jealous too! LOL!!!! You are sweet and I love watching you! I'm looking forward to getting a jumbo flyer for my Ashford single drive traveler so I can ply larger bobbins! :)
I am glad to see you settled in your new home and now have time to spin. Perfect timing with your flax/linen spin. I hadn’t seen the wet spin technique before. I will make sure to wear an apron when spinning my Paradise flax. Good luck with the spin competition.
Hi Evie, hope you're all OK. Sorry I missed the live. Watching the Replay. Love how you managed to get All that Fibre Spun up Thanksforshowing the Flax. I was "Gifted" some a few weeks ago, but i haven'ttried to spin it yet... Was good to hear Marks voice again. Thanks for letting him Tag Along with you 😅😅 Hope you do well in "Spin Together " Happy Spinning. Take care and stay safe Lots of love to you all. Jen xx 💖😘🐏🐏🎃🎃💕
I love your blouse with foxes! I've seen so many cute fabrics and have a pattern but I procrastinate when it comes to sewing. I have fiber to spin and socks to knit and a loom to dress! It'll happen.
I love your videos. I work full time and spinning in the evenings has become my downtime. Your clips are really informative and you’re teaching me so much! I’m enjoying learning more about spinning with silk. I’m interested in learning more about colour selection, and combining fibres.
I find it so much easier just winding round the back of a chair, then into a tennis ball type ball by hand. I have more control of the yarn. You could do the same straight off the Swift or Niddy Noddy.
Yes, that is an excellent method. Honestly, I was rushing when I messed it up. I should have made a plying ball rather than a center pull like you suggested. I'm getting it untangled by a little bit each day though. Hopefully I'll have it untangled before the yardage is due to be turned in! 🧶💜🐑
Glad you had fun on spin together. I love doing that... This is my first year That I got to use a wheel. So much more productive with a wheel than a drop spindle 😂 Your yarn is gorgeous. And I had the same problem with the center pull ball. I figured I had too much spin... Oh well
Hi Eve, I have joined a Spin Team for Feb 17-24 2024 and this is why I am watching your video on "How much yarn can I spin in a week" I have sympathy for you and your center ball winding. I have tangled so many yarns myself, and hoses and ropes, etc. Anyway, I have a Q about body aches when spending so much time carding, flicking locks, drum carding, etc. my back is killing me this week because I am spending hours each day in my craft room getting ready for the spin together contest. I also am finally getting to prepare all my fibers so I can make yarn. I recently retired and now I am enjoying spending time with my fiber, but my body is in pain. Do you have any tips??? thanks again
Sometimes on your videos you fold your roving in half over your fingers and draft it and sometimes you draft it directly from the roving end. What is the advantage of each way and when do you use one or the other? Thanks
For years I joined a bunch of friends every Monday to play various card and board games...(bear with me, here)...As is the nature of games, sometimes you win, sometimes not. My friends were always puzzled that losing didn't bother me. Finally, I told them my "secret" ..... I don't mind not winning, I just hate coming in last. Hey, as long as you participate, and participate honestly, you've done your bit...(and your best!)
I just finished spinning a tussah silk blend and had the exact same thing happen with a center-pull ball! I am sorry this happened to you , but it really helped me realize I didn't make a mistake, I think silk is just too "grabby" for a center-pull ball plying method, maybe!
You should ask your other half to buy or make a 3d printer. That way you can make new bobbins for your spinning! That's what I did. They work great. Also, is there any advice you can offer, otherthan the no-brainer, consistancey, for spinning yarn for use in machine knitting?
I had a question how thick should each strand that I spin be? I want to make a nice three ply yarn or four ply but I don’t even know what one strand would be
Hi Your videos are so informative, especially for someone who is new to spinning. I’m so intrigued by this craft and would like to know which spinning tool would you recommend for a novice like myself?
The least expensive way to get started is with a spindle. You can even make one yourself, but you can do a lot with a simple drop spindle! I also have a tutorial about spinning with a drop spindle and another video about choosing a spinning wheel so that might help you get started! Welcome!
Enjoyable video. Have you considered unwinding 10 yds of the silk and weighing it and then weighing the entire amount and calculating your yardage based on how much the 10 yds weighed?
Yes, but I'm not allowed to count it that way for the competition. 😭 I should do it though, just to see... I ended up getting about 250 yards of the white silk untangled but there was a bit left I just had to give up on.
@@JillianEve that is a bummer. I've learned to wind my fine signals on toilet paper rolls with the slit for each end of the single. Those fit on my Ashford upright Lazy Kate. Love your wheels and your energy.
That is not how it should be. I'm so sorry. Sometimes TH-cam dumps ads into the video after I've checked it. I removed a bunch of them and I'm sorry you had to watch through it. That's not the viewer experience I want for anyone following my channel. 😥
Sometimes I don't see how they manage to spin so much in a day 😕 is it me or does it sometimes feel they had 5000 miles already spun in the back before they start. Sorry I know that's synical but that's how it seems to me sometimes lol . You've done a fantastic spin for spin together ❤the yarn it's gorgeous can't wait to see your cape and sweater when finished xx
I know! It really feels like that! From those I've seen have that much output, if it is a worsted or bulky spin, long draw, and an espinner or treadle wheel with an overdrive to go really fast, it's totally possible. I personally don't enjoy that type of spinning very much, but there are production spinners who really produce! 🧶💖
@@JillianEve yes I totally agree I just don't think I could get anywhere near what some people can do maybe I just can't fathom it in my head hahahahahah x
The one time I tried a center pull ball to 2 ply it ended up something like that. Luckily I sat through it and was able to untangle but it’s left me traumatized to try again 😂
that poor poor silk. :( i guess i'm a weirdo. i love a good barber pole in a variegated random dyed spin. everyone always seems to be talking about how to avoid em... and i just feel warm fuzzies seeming em. that cape... with the removable collar, there are so many options for collar switchouts. my mind just started going with idea... like lace collars.. or woven ones... a different collar for every day of the week. so many ways to show off fiber passion i may need to make something with this type of switchout ability. hmmmm the embroidery floss... i was wishing when you mentioned it, that i could reach back in time and tell you that commercial embroidery floss is usually 6 strands that are meant to be separated for use. you probably know this and probably doesn't effect what you are doing with it... but i just felt the need to mention just in case. once again, Mark is awesome.
Yes! I'm thinking up so many collar possibilities! Also, the embroidery, I should have made more clear and I possibly edited that (oops!) I'm using it like a decorative stitch so the full diameter amount is good for me. I mostly wanted a baseline to keep some consistency. I'll mention it more when I do the sewing. 💖 🧶😊💖
Sweetheart, “no place to wear this fancy stuff” is only in your mind. YOU are worth a ballgown to feed the chickens if that makes you feel happy and beautiful. Or a 100% alpaca sweater. Or your most comfy, beloved clothes. If there’s anything that life taught me it’s that as long as you’re not hurting anyone and it makes you happy, you should go ahead and make yourself happy. As you’ve commented on Evie’s channel there’s almost a 100% chance you’re a spinner yourself. If you’ve made something ‘fancy’ you’ve put in the work and are completely free to wear the result whenever and wherever you want. It won’t do any good on the shelf or in the closet. Wear it. Rejoice in it. Even if it’s something that came straight from the store, remember it’s not going to do any good just laying or hanging somewhere. Your username makes me think you live on a farm. No one who lives on a farm that I know of doesn’t work hard, long hours (or at least worked hard long hours for years on end). That means you earn (or earned) to rejoice in wearing anything you want if it makes you happy to do so. That happiness will make you glow, and that alone is worth it. Yes, at times one needs to be practical. But wearing something ‘fancy’ without heading out and meeting others it a gift to oneself everyone deserves. It’s never wasted because it makes it possible to get through the harder days. Hugs.
That is not how it should be. I'm so sorry. Sometimes TH-cam dumps ads into the video after I've checked it. I removed a bunch of them and I'm sorry you had to watch through it. That's not the viewer experience I want for anyone following my channel. 😥
And if you ever find that you dont want the yarn and you have too much, you can donate it to a retirement home, who use it to keep the minds of their residence happy, and then the products they make can be donated to homeless shelters and womens shelters...a donation that keeps on donating....I did this for my mil 2 years ago...it keeps yarns out of the landfills.

I also am finally getting to prepare all my fibers so I can make yarn. I recently retired and now I am enjoying spending time with my fiber, but my body is in pain. Do you have any tips??? thanks again
I hope you chainplyed the white silk! Wpuld be such a waste to thrpw it away
Sometimes on your videos you fold your roving in half over your fingers and draft it and sometimes you draft it directly from the roving end. What is the advantage of each way and when do you use one or the other? Thanks
Folding it over helps control the draft if the fibers are very slippery. 💕😊🧶
Absolutely lived watching this thank you evie xx
For years I joined a bunch of friends every Monday to play various card and board games...(bear with me, here)...As is the nature of games, sometimes you win, sometimes not.
My friends were always puzzled that losing didn't bother me.
Finally, I told them my "secret" ..... I don't mind not winning, I just hate coming in last.
Hey, as long as you participate, and participate honestly, you've done your bit...(and your best!)
This video makes me want to get into spinning! That fiber is absolutely beautiful. Wish I could use it for my own projects :)
You will be forever known as the Dream Weaver :)
Haha! I'm ok with that! 💜🧶🐑
I want to make a nice three ply yarn or four ply but I don’t even know what one strand would be
You'll need to test and sample it to find out just like knitting a swatch.
Hi
Your videos are so informative, especially for someone who is new to spinning.
Welcome!
Thank you so much.
@@ruthonell2739 that is 100% what I should have done. I rushed and look what happened! 😭😭😭🤣
Very enjoyable but exhausting even to watch! Five lots of ads though - is that how it should be?
That is not how it should be. I'm so sorry. Sometimes TH-cam dumps ads into the video after I've checked it. I removed a bunch of them and I'm sorry you had to watch through it. That's not the viewer experience I want for anyone following my channel. 😥
I love your apron! Did you make it? It’s awesome!
Thank you! I got it from Trader Joe's but im planning to make some with handspun trim. It will be a video eventually! 😊🧶💕
Now remember the embroidery floss is six strands all together.
The one time I tried a center pull ball to 2 ply it ended up something like that. Luckily I sat through it and was able to untangle but it’s left me traumatized to try again 😂
that poor poor silk. :(
i guess i'm a weirdo. i love a good barber pole in a variegated random dyed spin. everyone always seems to be talking about how to avoid em... and i just feel warm fuzzies seeming em.
that cape... with the removable collar, there are so many options for collar switchouts. my mind just started going with idea... like lace collars.. or woven ones... a different collar for every day of the week. so many ways to show off fiber passion i may need to make something with this type of switchout ability. hmmmm
the embroidery floss... i was wishing when you mentioned it, that i could reach back in time and tell you that commercial embroidery floss is usually 6 strands that are meant to be separated for use. you probably know this and probably doesn't effect what you are doing with it... but i just felt the need to mention just in case.
once again, Mark is awesome.
❤very helpful vodeo❤
I love you you sound like me.. No place to wear this fancy stuff.. Maybe I will wear it to feed the chickens haha
Hugs.
❤️🐑
I like the video that you were doing. The video part that had 5 or was it 6 ads, not so much. Please, reduce the ads for the next one back to 2.
That is not how it should be. I'm so sorry. Sometimes TH-cam dumps ads into the video after I've checked it. I removed a bunch of them and I'm sorry you had to watch through it. That's not the viewer experience I want for anyone following my channel. 😥
Please describe what your hands are doing, this doesn't help even though its wonderful
Besides the person who spun a mile the first day, has a sore back so probably only pun 10 min on day 2.
I think I have a sore treadle foot after this week too! 😅🧶💜
I feel sick for you on that white silk yarn problem. :(
It is such a mess! I'm getting it worked out little by little, but still...ouch! 🧶💜🐑😊
