Probably more complicated than that, right? Just like the black actors doing it, the white actors have expectations they have to meet (same as today really, even TH-camrs). It really reflects upon the people as a whole though, which are the machine that drives what we think is popular or trending. So the actors may or may not have hated black people, but it lets you know where society as a bigger whole was at during those times to even begin to think that it's okay. More so, similar to the Nazis, the white people in power were creating a system to convince people that black people are a certain way (was even intended to make black people also think that about their own people). Nazis used their propaganda machine to do the same and even if you weren't a German against Jewish people, it created a societal normal that desensitized the masses toward the horrific things they were doing and going to do; even if you disagreed, your voice was diminished by the voice of society so you didn't speak/act out against it. Sort of like when people say "boys will be boys," it completely dismisses the behavior and intent by implying that its simply something normal that one should accept. However, the actors and such today, it shows you where society is at now. They did what they did, and instead of society accepting it, they dealt with it instead. Personally, I learned a lot from this video about it and didn't really know the history to it at all. I wasn't the best student in the world, but I'm positive they never taught us this in school here when growing up. Anyways, as you said, it's all insane really. I'm glad that I was born into a generation that we can all sit and reflect on it together though. Wasn't that long ago where that wasn't possible. Sometimes it's hard to see/hear through all the noise from the previous generations that are still alive, but the newer generations are more united together with each other than any of the previous generations have ever seen. Only a matter of time now. Probably even the reason why the Gov been trying to divide us a lot more lately; they don't want us working together.
I mean it depends on the school and teacher you have, I'm currently attending a school that takes history very seriously and has gone very deep into it. But sadly some schools and states don't take history seriously and barely teach ot or go that deep into it. This is something that happens in alot of other countries not just America sadly.
i’ve only learned about segregation, Abraham Lincoln, MLK, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and that’s it... African-American History should be taught in every grade
Even as a small child, I realized that this was rude, disrespectful, repulsive and disgusting when I saw an old movie on television. It was sickening and always will be!
What's wrong with that today??? This was wrong and happened so long ago why new generations have to to pay for something they didn't do? That's retarted!
@@samramos2436 just because we're in a totally different year doesn't make it any less offensive. blackface was the reality of racism in mocking African-Americans and it still means the exact same thing that it did back then in the late 1900s, yet people continue to do it anyway in the present time. racism overall with Mexicans, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, Hawaiians and African-Americans is still a huge issue in the U.S. today - haven't you looked around?

This really needs to be taught in school, so many kids today see being black as a 'cool' or 'edgy' thing, so they try to copy us. But, they don't want to 'copy' the experience, or remember the history behind it.
That's because black culture glorifies young black men who rap about committing crimes. White children have been forced to integrate and are confused by that glorification, they try to emulate the trends they see in black culture and it leads them down the path to prison. When the opposite happens and a black child acts like he had some home training it can actually turn out well.

ADVICE TO ANY PARENT WHO HAS CHILDREN WHO WANT TO DRESS UP AS BLACK HISTORICAL FIGURES FOR ANY REASON: If you're child wants to be a black historical figure for Halloween, School, what ever reason but their not black then they can just don't make them wear black face, for p example: When I was in third grade, we had a activity to tribute for people like George Washington, Abarham Linkin, Matin Luther King Jr, ext. I wanted to be Harriet Tubman but I'm a white girl and she's black... Not a problem, I was a *white* Harriett Tubman and did *not* use blackface, my mom was scared but then I told my mixed teacher who I was (she's mixed between black and white) and she was delighted! She even told me that I was her favorite since Tubman was her hero! In short, don't use blackface. Your child can just be a different race version of the black person they're trying to be.
Isn't painting your face considered "blackface" only when done in an exaggerated form that mocks black people? Typically with the addition of some silly performance? I fail to see how the makeup would fit into this if done respectfully, in cosplay, for example. Dunno, maybe I'm just purist when it comes to cosplay, and like it to be as close to the portrayed character as possible. ^^'
Obviously blackface alone is offensive with its exaggerated features and using literally black makeup but I think the real aspect of it that offends a lot more (to me, at least) is the manner in which the White person takes it upon themselves to "act like a Black person." Or at least act like how they think a Black person behaves which usually amounts to a bunch of stereotypes that are dehumanizing.
@@jjgeoffphhcinkkllee Those are broad actions you're referring to. Stereotypes aren't limited to just that kind of stuff. There are stereotypes of traits, expectations, behavior, inflection, ability, and more. If I were to identify a specific stereotype to correspond to that list, I'd say the exaggerated lips are a trait, then there are low expectations for success that people impose on all Blacks, as well as impulsive behavior, a "ghetto" inflection on speech, and the alleged inability to evolve which gives people the green light to throw at them the very dehumanizing and hurtful comparison to monkeys and chimps.

The fact of the matter is, blackface is offensive. However, it shouldn't be swept under the rug and forgotten. Like many controversial topics of the past, it should be discussed and studied so as to fully understand where people's minds once were, and then judged appropriately and accordingly on how far we've come as a society.

This really needs to be taught in school, so many kids today see being black as a 'cool' or 'edgy' thing, so they try to copy us. But, they don't want to 'copy' the experience, or remember the history behind it.
That's because black culture glorifies young black men who rap about committing crimes.

ADVICE TO ANY PARENT WHO HAS CHILDREN WHO WANT TO DRESS UP AS BLACK HISTORICAL FIGURES FOR ANY REASON:
If you're child wants to be a black historical figure for Halloween, School, what ever reason but their not black then they can just don't make them wear black face, for p example: When I was in third grade, we had a activity to tribute for people like George Washington, Abarham Linkin, Matin Luther King Jr, ext.

Isn't painting your face considered "blackface" only when done in an exaggerated form that mocks black people? Typically with the addition of some silly performance? Dunno, maybe I'm just purist when it comes to cosplay, and like it to be as close to the portrayed character as possible. ^^'
Obviously blackface alone is offensive with its exaggerated features and using literally black makeup but I think the real aspect of it that offends a lot more (to me, at least) is the manner in which the White person takes it upon themselves to "act like a Black person." Or at least act like how they think a Black person behaves which usually amounts to a bunch of stereotypes that are dehumanizing.

I don't think old blackface acts ever portrayed robberies or gang shootings or r@ping lol, so obviously they were avoiding plenty of stereotypes....

Wrong snowflake. the only way to truly heal as a nation and bring all Races together is to stop ripping off the scabs of old wounds and teaching people about racism. you can't have your cake and eat it too. You can't continuously complain about racism and teach young kids about "evil white people" and then expect the races to come together and heal. you are only perpetuating Division and anger. Set aside your personal views and just listen and try to understand what the black person was viewed as. And the geographic make up of the world also have a huge impact over how the cultures of this world developed.
White people by geography whilst black people where cursed. Atleast, for the use of civilization and empire building.
White people also have the most racist cultural history. On the oposite end of that the native Americans didn't care what Race you where, if you where in the tribe and you where a good person they would love you. If you where from an ennimy tribe though... Thats a different story...
it's not so much history that affects black Americans as just plain racism does, independent of history. If the white leaders of our country wanted everyone to be equal, it could have been done 100 years ago.
We are all affected by history. We must be conscious of it and not only strive to not repeat it, but to learn from it.
It’s a thing called past down trauma. Our ancestors never received therapy from slavery, Jim Crow era and everything else. But we are strong and resilient, regardless of what others say.

Can someone do a story on who wrote n produced those black face productions? They couldn’t just appear. There was a real motive. Actors were cast... so why blame only them?
A Jewish man by the name of Alfred Cohn, there's one you can look up. He wrote "The Jazz Singer". The first movie with sound.
Why didn't they mention the fact the first person who popularized "blackface" was a )ewish man named AI JoIson. He was even called "the king of blackface." But of course, as usual, white GentiIes get bIamed.
Back then producers did not cast black performers in starring roles. So they cast white performers mimicking black entertainers.🎭
They cant, because they were Jews, and thats Verbotten...
@@tiawilliams5690 You are correct. And it was wrong. But today, for Halloween, young people dress up and do black face because they ADMIRE the black person they are imitating. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Many black people have a totally different viewpoint than the one presented in this video. Why aren't their voices being heard? Why are black people treated like they are a collective? Why do white people assume all black people are on board with this presentation? That in itself is racist.
Some of these comments make me sick. They’re still people asking “why does this even matter” “I don’t get the concept of this” well listen.
