Have you seen Chase Rost's new tutorial on this? At 5:30 he says to cut the slit in the side because the clamping pressure of the clamp is strongest in the back. Also if the slit is in the side, the clamp will cover the slit entirely which sort of reinforces it th-cam.com/video/-dz0sGTzFBA/w-d-xo.html

It would physically cut it, but titanium is weird and likes to burst into flames. So be careful with sparks and shit.
