Why do you want to transition to the dominant chord when you switch keys? When he shows the "semi tone down" thing from a diminished chord, he always builds that note into the dominant chord of the new key. Is there a reason? Just trying to understand the pattern here. Putting the F# down a semi tone is basically a F 2nd inversion. But thats not useful I guess?
It’s because the dominant 7 chord of the new key is the “five” chord of that new key. It just makes the modulation stronger and more intensional. The F second inversion chord that you’re referring to would be the F dominant 7 chord in the key of Bb major, which is the “five” chord that I’m referring to. So by transitioning to the “five” chord, you are basically setting up the key that you are changing to, which solidifies it more and allows for smoother voice leading and such, which is why it works so well If that makes any sense.
