  • This week I tell you the story on how I first came to be in my shop, but also say goodbye to it. Cody and I are moving out of the City and into the country. We are still staying in Texas, but just wanted a little more leg room. Even though it's tough saying goodbye to a space I've invested a lot of time getting exactly the way I want/need it, I'm still very much looking forward to the future. I'll be designing and building my next shop which will be a huge challenge, but one that I am really looking forward to. Stay tuned because I'm bringing you guys along with me. Oh and don't worry, I'll still be making videos in the mean time. I'll just be floating around shopless for a while. ; )

      What makes you think she won't have videos about building the new shop? As someone well into the process of building my own shop, it's a fun experience and nice to be able to stand inside this thing that not so long ago was just a 3D model on my computer.

    You were the first youtube creator I ever subscribed to after I stumbled onto a video of you talking about quitting your job to try to do this as a career. Kind of caught my interest. I once commented that you were the type of individual that was going to be successful in whatever career path you took... it was that obvious. I'm glad you are doing it in the noble craft of working with your hands. Its been a delight watching your progress.

      April Wilkerson , I know how you feel about changing shops, I did the same almost a year ago. the main things I would recommend are build it bigger than you think you will need, wire it good with lots of outlet circuts led lighting and spray foam insulation. if you look,at some of my old videos you will see the shop differences

    • @robertsingleton1187

      Spray foam insulation is good, but only if mixed properly. Look up poisoned houses here on TH-cam, and you will see many who used it, then had an uninhabitable space because of the wrong chemical mixes. I am a fan of using fiberglass insulation, and styro board insulation, because there are now worries. :)

    Long time watcher, first time commenter. When I saw the video title, I could not believe it. Not only is that shop a part of you, but you are a part of that shop (and that home). I nearly cried when you did not do the signature A.W. wave at the end. You have done so much making your home a better place. The new owners better appreciate all you have done! Your channel should be part of the Listing :-). Your home is famous! It is certainly bittersweet, but I am definitely looking forward to all of the new projects you will have. At one point, I actually wondered if you would ever run out, but no more! Congrats on your next step in life. I cannot wait to see the new shop you build. It is going to be absolutely amazing.

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      : ) If you can believe it, I still had five pages of to-do projects I wanted to get done for the house. But oh well. The house and shop were perfect but just in the wrong location. Cody and I have always wanted to be in the country so no matter how fond of the house I was, I knew from the day we bought it that it wasn't going to be our forever home. It's alright though, it's part of our story and I'm glad for it.

      That can be more valuable to you than you know. I'm in real estate, and I can tell you that having all of those pictures and that video available would make it possible for me to prepare a great marketing presentation on the condition of the property. Buyers will like new stairs, fence, and walkways you installed, but they'll love it when you can show them that everything was done properly, and they don't have to worry about it falling apart in 5 years. Good luck in the new adventure, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

    Always loved your shop. I get jealous every time I walk in to my single car garage/shop that I can barely fit my tools into. I question why we bought this place every time I go in there, then remember my wife fell in love with the spa style bathroom, haha

      Lynn, I am essentially in the same boat except I'm stuck in my basement and live in the city in a rental so really have to count pennies at this point and hopefully with the couple of projects I'm working on now, business picks up to where I can soon afford to move and buy a home where I can build my shop in the county.

    This video is my first introduction to your channel and I clicked because of your title. I make custom boat canvas and am currently in my third shop in 15 years. In leaving my prior two shops, I was immediately moving into remodeled or new and improved space but it was still a bit emotional saying goodbye. I like my house but there is nothing quite so personal and gratifying as the space where we imagine, design, fabricate and sometimes do over. Just walking in and turning on the lights feels good. You have a golden opportunity to build a shop exactly the way you want it, unencumbered by any restrictions imposed by an existing structure. Still, I can completely understand how you might be feeling now about leaving a space you invested so much time and effort into. But, as you said, all that time and effort has resulted in who you are and what you have accomplished until now, so while you are losing a physical space, you are taking all the experience and memories with you. Building a new shop from scratch will also be an education, I'm sure! Looking forward to your future videos of that process, as I am sure I will learn even more than I have from watching your videos so far.

    I'm a grown man, I shed a tear. Sad to see you move from the happy builds and memories. I can only hope you build a place you will fall in love with and create more builds and memories and continue to grow in your passion and in your sanctuary. Can't wait to see what you have envisioned in a personalized shop built up from the ground up from your beautiful mind. Keep us all posted, you have my attention and support.

    April, I have followed you and some of the awesome designs that you have shared with the world. Yes, you may be closing one book, but you have a new book to write. Just imagine, now you can take the time to plan and build something that you can really call your own and you can share it with the world. You dreams. I'm really excited to see what you and your hubby come up with.
    Blessings.

    Aww April. Sad but exciting at the same time! I have enjoyed watching you progress in your woodworking and have found your videos very entertaining and funny. Cant wait until you update us all in your new digs! I am a woodworker too and have spent many years making my shop perfect for my needs, so I am a bit transported whenever I watch newer, young woodworkers going through the same process. Of course I am also jealous of all the sponsors too! Good luck to you awesome woodworker!

    Will you build one big shop and share it or have two buildings? As someone with my own shop on 15 acres living out in the sticks is the best!

      Well the house has a garage that will be Cody's. However, I might still end up building him something as well....maybe a toy storage area though instead of a shop. Something for him to park all the toys in until he wants to ride or work on them. That way he doesn't have to crowd his shop with storage.

    Its going to be super fun to see you design and build your own shop, even though it will take some time to get it done its going to be an awesome journey for you guys... do you have a deadline of some sort for when the new shop will be done ? 4-6 months maybe ?

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yep, like Justin said. Even when Cody and I purchased the home we both knew it wouldn't be our forever home. The entire time I was living here, I knew we would be moving when we could. The projects like the stairs needed to be done before selling the home and we saved tons of money by me tackling them instead of paying a contractor. : )

    My wife and I decide to move out of FL to TN. I had a shop just like yours, built from the ground up in a two car garage. It was the place I learned all of machining and welding skills. I had to sell a lot of machinery that meant a lot to me, like a vertical mill I restored from scratch, or the cabinets I learned to weld together. We spend about a year in a temporary home until getting a new home. It was a good time to step back and plan what I really wanted. Now it's an air conditioned space twice the size of what I had before. Anyway, life is a journey, not the destination. Good luck April!

    April, what a fantastic video. I TOTALLY get how you feel, but remember once you start your new shop you will be so thrilled! I am in a similiar situation. I have a small shop behind my garage. It's my santuary, "happy place", and so much more. Later this year, we will be moving to Florida from Maryland. There I am taking the one car garage and making it my new "happy place"! I am already planning in my head everything I will be doing. I will besad leaving this one, but I know the new one will be bigger and better! Your videos have been so instrumental in giving me great ideas and guidance in becoming a better woodworker. Congrats on your new place! You go girl!!! I will be waiting for your next video!!!
