- Lately I’ve been getting a TON of question in regards to MiSTer FPGA arcade cores and if they’d be possible…probably because of the MiSTer FPGA N64 core. Leading the charge? Capcom CPS III (or Capcom CPS 3)…home of Street Fighter III, Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Jojo's Venture, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Red Earth! Because who wouldn't want Street Fighter 3 on MiSTer FPGA and a Capcom CPS III arcade core!

Now that the Nintendo 64 MiSTer FPGA core has proven to be very possible...my comments section and my Discord DMs keep lighting up with questions like "Could MiSTer FPGA run X"...and the number one question of all is whether or not MiSTer FPGA could handle the Capcom CPS 3 arcade board. So let's look at the Sega arcade hardware, the MiSTer FPGA hardware, break down the technical specifications and see if Capcom CPS III is truly the impossible core or if we have another MiSTer FPGA N64 core situation on our hands!

If it’s possible that would be mind boggling. Having third strike run off a mister at tournaments would open up that game even more once again. Especially since now the only way to play it on modern consoles or PC is through the sf collection or fightcade and the sf collection itself has a bit more input lag compared to fightcade and original arcade hw.
Yes the OG hardware is so temperamental and fragile sadly
Red Earth did eventually get ported. It's on the Capcom Fighting Collection for ps4/xbox1/steam
I always forget about that
an awseome and underrated game ...
Some great kaiju sprites for sure
Beat me to it.
I have that collection on my switch as well
CPS3 games are the pinnacle of video game beauty to me. You can keep your polygons and ray-traced graphics.
I just wish we’d seen the hardware used more than what we got
polygons will always become dated in time but sprites are forever
They def aged better than 3D of this era
@@VideoGameEsoterica while i do find the 3D of this era charming in its own way, it's far from cutting edge like it was back then whereas the sprite based games from back then are as beautiful as ever
Ray tracing is overrated ... Art style, matter the dimensions, is eternal
It's a pity more games weren't made on the CPSIII, I would have loved a few Capcom beat 'em ups and shoot 'em ups on there. In an alternate universe we could have been playing another game in the 19xx series or a proper Final Fight 2!!
Yes sadly the hardware barely got utilized
Agreed. Sadly that was a time when Capcom and much of the arcade industry was convinced people wouldn’t put money in anything but vs fighting games.
I mean they were def profitable
@@VideoGameEsoterica I guess so. But then we saw other 2D boards like PGM come along with more variety, and I’m guessing PGM did ok? I don’t know but they definitely had more games and genres than CPS3. Anyway, like everyone I just would’ve loved to have seen what else Capcom’s amazing developers could’ve done on CPS3 besides fighting games. But we will never know.
PGM did well because it was super low cost for the era
This is my absolute most wanted core.
Seems like a lot of people feel that way
@@VideoGameEsoterica I bought my MiSTer because of NeoGeo, CPS2, and PSX fighting games. CPS3 is final frontier for retro fighting game fans. When I take my CRT setup to locals, I bring my MiSTer and Dreamcast. The Third Strike and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure HftF ports on the DC are subpar, so the CPS3 core on MiSTer would solve all my problems.
Let’s hope one day it happens. I’m optimistic :)
@@ivanperez295 I know it's not as good as a proper mister fgpa but I use a thinkcentre m93p on my CRT for third strike ! It's still emulation but way better than the DC ports and it's clearly portable enough for locals. We play 2002 um/kof 11 on it too !
@@Cardboxx I have a Raspberry Pi4 running RGB-Pi that I use in a similar fashion. 1 frame of runahead in FBneo feels really good. The developer claims to have accomplished zero lag with his current project ReplayOS.
Fun drinking game: take a shot every time he says "in and of itself".
Enjoy your blackout
He likes to say whatsoever a lot too.
And 100%. Don’t forget that
@@VideoGameEsoterica I 100% will not forget this in and of itself whatsoever.
As someone who owns a real CPS3 and Third Strike, I will finally buy a dedicated MiSTerCade if the CPS3 core ever is released. Ill then retire the ol' girl for safe keeping.
A logical choice :)
correct pronunciation of HITACHI is HEE-TACHI 🙂
Who cares
People. He wrote it nicely so no biggie
Check his pronunciation of panzer dragoon zwei... My jaw still hurts.
@@liamconverse8950 Who cares about your comment...
Lol I wonder why
I believe a core is coming and is possible but I'm super concerned that it's going to be gate-kept behind marsfpga would love to be proven wrong tho
I don’t think that will happen if it’s able to be run on MisTer
Hope its doable on the mister, but, do you really think it actually is a relatively simple pcb? Besides the ram, sram, operationals and sound opamps, everything else i see on the board is a bespoke Capcom part (ok, the bigass chip on the cart is an Hitachi SH2, but a custom one, as well as will happen with some of those capcom branded chip on the main board). Im quite sure its going to be a challenge for Jotego and his team.
My SF3 3rd strike board went bust ages ago, and emulators/ports, doesnt cut the line for me so i really hope its finally comming to mister!
Def a challenge but customs can still be reverse engineered like we’ve seen on MiSTer time and time again
I don't know about you but I don't give much care for the CPS-III core considering the community will only get SFIII. I just really wish Jotego was working on the PolyGame Master so we can get Ketsui, DDP DOJ, and Espgaluda among many others. I would love to see a similar video on the specs and if it could theoretically work on the de-10 nano
Yes I’d rather PGM over CPS III myself too but I guess we are just in the minority opinion there 🤷🏻♂️
I love 3rd Strike, and I've played it many times via emulation, so to play it on MiSTer would be lovely.
It would be an awesome time
Nice video 👍
Could you perhaps look into the plausibility of CV1000 next?
I just may :)
I'd love to see the authentic CPS3 on MISTer but I'm very happy with running my Dreamcast with RetroTink 4k. There are some minor issues related to BFI or the lack of it but it's very very close to being perfect. I know the Street Fighter community think the Dreamcast 3rd Strike port is trash but it's a strange opinion I can't agree with. The ''unblockable'' combo's aren't there but I don't care.
It’s not an amazing port but it’s solid and gets the job done
I wouldn't expect it anytime soon since jotego hasn't mentioned it at all since his initial posts about documentation of the board layout.
Yes we haven’t had much info since
It'll be amazing having Third Strike on MiSTer. But man, I remember when Jotego did the poll for this one, and the PGM was one of the options. I would have rather had PGM by a mile! So many amazing shmups on that one.
PGM is better than CPS III and I stand by that
I'd love to see DoDonpachi Dai Oujou in FPGA. No clue if MiSTer could run it though
At least we already have some CAVE games
@@VideoGameEsoterica I'm certainly not complaining! Playing DoDonpachi and EspRaDe on MiSTer with an arcade stick is a blast. Dai Oujou would just be absolute perfection
CAVE never really made a bad shmup minus perhaps Deathsmiles 2
If there's a PGM core someday, pretty sure this game will be on it
We need PGM
I wonder how much extra beef a Hitachi SH-3 would be... Thinking Cave CV1000 boards.
I think they will get the CPSIII licked one day. I base that entirely on faith and zero knowledge lol.
It’s def probably above something MiSTer can do
I'm pretty sure the core will get used for 3rd Strike and nothing else, but its nice to have for preservation sake.
SF III has always been lesser than Alpha to me
I'd be interested to see the same video done for mvc2 which I think is impossible(?) but it would be neat to hear why. Sort of the opposite of this video haha.
Mvc2 is on Naomi hardware which is different from the cps3 shown here. I’m not too knowledgeable on it but I’m assuming it’s too taxing. Would love for it to be possible because mvc2 is my favourite fighter of all time.
That’s NAOMI. Zero shot at MiSTer
Much too taxing
Saturn could have since some nice cps3 ports
More than likely yes
Better question would be where are Sega System 18, 24, 32 and Model 1?
System 18 is being worked on
I didn't know this board used cartridges. Cartridge based arcade boards are cool because they're basically like consoles
They use carts for the CPU and discs to load the data into ram
@@VideoGameEsoterica Doesn't seem like it has loading delays
It’s a long load on boot on real hardware as the cd copies over to the ram then there is no loading.
I hope this isnt clickbait!! :P
Is anything I do ever clickbait?
No, never here. "I have the PCB, I can play anytime on my PVM, it is so much fun" Here is 99% of his videos.
Back then, a CD was a lot cheaper than the memory chips required for these games.
Yes rom carts of that size would be much more money
Hitachi is pronounced 'Heatachi', not 'Hightachi' 😬
Just how I pronounce it
@@VideoGameEsotericahe’s right you said hi tachi but actually it’s he tachi (I’m not trying to be a d)
It’s just how I remember it and it’s burned in my brain that way
Bit of Mister news, on Taki 2 channel he has a video talking about a 99 dollar Mister board is almost here. I’m not promoting his channel but, informing people of news. That’s all.
I’ll have an update video for tomorrow 7:30 am CST. Have something more important today at 3 pm. Running it an hour early it’s that big
I NEEEEEDDDDDDDD this in my life. I've been waiting for 100% accuracy for this board since 2016. What I would love to see, assuming we get this on MiSTeR is if someone is smart enough and crazy enough to port SF3 Next Generation to Sega Saturn, yes I said it. Spec wise, it should work, especially with a RAM Cart (4MB of course). I don't know about 3rd Strike but the first one should technically be able to. It would most likely be a better port then the Dreamcast version.
Hopefully we hear more in 2024. That’s my hope at least
That would be the total overkill if these games were run.....
Final burn neo. Free free free free free
That is true and I think everyone knows it’s free lol
We both know the issue is you aren’t believing hard enough.
I’m turgid with belief
@@VideoGameEsoterica so that’s what that is.
Rock hard belief
FIRST!
You cannot be stopped
25MHz per second 🤡
Did I say per second? Filmmaker Brain. That’s probably me thinking 24p/25p in PAL territories
