  • How to Disassemble-clean-assemble a Floyd Rose double locking bridge
    Guitar - Ibanez GRG270 (10 years old)
    In this video I show how how disassemble a floyd rose bridge, clean all the parts, lubricate them and assemble them back to a single piece onto the guitar.
    Your Floyd rose might be slightly different than mine but the fundamentals are the same. Follow the steps in the video and your bridge will be restored back to new again.
    Thanx for watching :)

    Thanks for the tutorial! Just an additional suggestion (not sure if you mentioned it in the video): before unscrewing the tremolo block (heavy piece where one end of the springs is set), mark its orientation. If it is mounted back in reverse (like i did), the springs will keep popping off once you put the whole thing back. Apparently the little holes are drilled at an angle, but you can't tell from the ouside.

    Very good. Also, good work being polite to 'Common Sense'. You explained intonation fine as far as I can see. Only thing I was missing was if there is a good way to seevice the surfaces on the pegs and knife edges (in case they had been mistreated in the past). Thanks.

      @jun_zq  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thankyou for the response. Do you mean tuning pegs? For knife edges we would need a good file and patience to do it.

    You are awesome.... i bought a used Ibanez and it has always been "wrong". I did not know what was the problem... but now I know. The saddles were not in the right ordre. Two of them were switched at somepoint before I got it. Now the guitar is "normal". Thanks alot for this great video man... much love and best of luck

    Not trying to knock the cleaning solution cause i might be totally wrong, but water oxidizes zinc alloy and thats what I've read my FR (Special) is made of. Its different than normal FRs; manufactured in Korea :/ courtesy of Schecter guitars. (Damien Elite FR) I heard lemon juice was good but I don't want to corrode my FR any more than it already has

    • @pooltheboy

      Also, thanks for the instructional, very informative. Not many disassembly videos done as thorough as this. Good stuff

    • @jun_zq
      @jun_zq  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thankyou. For zinc corrosion lemon juice will be multiple times stronger than the soap solution. Soap is basic whereas lemon juice is very acidic. Just do the cleaning as fast as you can and then wipe of the solution and dry it quickly and apply some oil That's what I would suggest

    • @pooltheboy
      @pooltheboy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JunZQ Gagan thanks for the reply! That makes sense. I’m picking up some oil today I read that guitar body polish also removes oxidation

    Did you check the knife edges to see if they need to be filed as this affects tuning and return to pitch after diving

    sorry but, what did you use to clean the parts? (i mean, the liquid)

    • @jun_zq
      @jun_zq  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You may use a mineral oil if there is a lot of gunk and grease. But dishwashing liquid will do a great job. Don't forget to dry it after you have washed it.

      Technically yeah but you should probably replace them if you’re going through all this effort to clean other parts. Get it all in good shape ya know?

  • @kidwave1

    When you put the string blocks back in, which way does the dimple go? towards the bottom or the top? mine fell oiut when cleaning and im not sure which way they go back in.

    • @Wargasm644
      @Wargasm644 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dimple towards the bottom. That way the lock screws can get into them and clamp your strings in nice and tight . Also, I usually put a strip of blue painters tape over the entire assembly so they don’t fall out. If the little blocks are dented or scratched up, buy new ones. They won’t hold your strings real well if they are not in good shape. They are cheap anyways. Unless you buy titanium inserts. But they’ll last forever. Also, when changing strings, I snug all my strings into the bridge while it’s in my hand . You can really get them nice and snug and your guitar will stay in tune really well. You really can’t get the super snug while the bridge is sitting in your guitar. And you won’t have to worry about jacking up your pivot posts, knife edges and scratching the body of your guitar with the hex key 🤘🏻👊🏻

    Hi Mate, my Floyd from Ibanez is slightly rusted, same with head's of the neck screws.
    What should I do?

    • @jun_zq
      @jun_zq  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello,
      You should take all the parts apart by unscrewing everything. Then soak them in diluted vinegar + water for 10+ hours overnight. Next day wash them with clean water and brush the rust off.
      Make sure you wash all the vinegar out. Then dry them after removing rust and apply oil for protection. Assemble everything being back and it should be fine

      @@jun_zq Thanks, problem is that bridge is painted Black.
      It's ok if removes whole paint?

    • @jun_zq
      @jun_zq  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't remove the paint. Just brush off the rust wherever it appear. And if the paint was intact the bridge wouldn't have rusted in the first place. So my assumption is, the paint has started to chip off, it's better to just brush off whatever comes out

    • @jun_zq
      @jun_zq  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may use pliers. Or a piece of hard string to pull it. One method is to fix it on the bridge first and then on the tremelo plate.

      Coconut oil works well as a home replacement for lemon oil which is mentioned for this job. However you may use any natural oil you want(not mineral oils)

      They are asking would it damage the floyd rose if they take it out of the guitar with the string still in it

    • @jun_zq
      @jun_zq  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We'll, it won't damage the guitar but it may damage you :) strings have considerable tension in the guitar and if you take apart the bridge with strings on, there is a change you may get hit by a flying string. It's always better to remove strings (or loosen them atleast in some cases) before taking apart your guitar.
