In China, the 20th Century was marked by dramatic social and political changes. It saw the end of the Qing Dynasty, the emergence of regional warlord governments, a Japanese military occupation, the Chinese Civil War and the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It was equally eventful in the fields of music, painting, drama and literature. Behind this transformation was a group of remarkable individuals, men who persevered despite national and personal tragedies. A new ten-part documentary series explores their contributions and legacies.

Beautiful documentary. Lin Fengmian is the brother of my grand father.

Many thanks for this spectacularly wonderful eye and heart opening presentation! I feel like a cultural illiterate not having known about this artist, this man. I have visited China, a country, like it’s Art, too vast to ever completely absorb in a lifetime. I can’t help wondering what this planet could be like if East and West fused or at least had a closer spiritual/cultural intercourse. But at age 72, I will never get to see it in my lifetime. Oh how I yearn for one world.

I usually care more about the art than the artist, but in this case, it was amazing to hear about the life of Lin Fengmian. Such a tragic and yet beautiful tale, I was quite moved at multiple occassions. Not all lifes are like movie, but his life definitely was. And surely, a great movie could be made on his life-story.

I totally agree, fascinating life-story. I love how learning about the artist's life brings out more context and meaning to their artwork. A lot of great artists seem to have tragic, beautiful stories.

The man was a true artist, and as is often the case, virtually unheard of in the west.
His whole focus in life was his art, likely at the detriment of his friends and family.
Great art is rarely created by someone who is happy and well - adjusted.
I will have to look further into this great artist.
    Thanks for posting this.

We definitely need to teach and talk more about non-western art.

Beautiful art and life story. I love seeing how his experiences come through in his art yet contrast with his tragedies as they are bright and optimistic.

Inasmuch as my Chinese is a bit rusty, it would've been greatly appreciated if the subtitles had been in larger letters and in the much more readable color yellow whenever an English translation was needed.

My Chinese is non-existent, and my ageing eyes are not the best any more. Following those tiny subtitles is hard work.
