I am the owner of the Lexus. Though I do not know the maintenance history of the car, I could guess that it was not good. When I got the car a few months ago the tires were so bald the threads were visible. All I did before taking it up to Omega was get new tires and an oil change. Wife put the magnet on it and made a license plate frame for it. We really like the car and want to keep it around as weekend road trip car. For the record I do not think it's the "worst car in the history of the world", like those guys on TV think.

Nothing made by Toyota would ever come close to being labeled as "worst car in the history of the world" by anyone with an ounce of intelligence. People who say such are merely attempting to dramatize their distaste of its design or plainly unintelligent. As long as the fluids were changed even remotely close to the recommended intervals it will easily run another decade or two given the mileage.

@@johnb.7979 I had similar experiences. First, just trying to get a job was like pulling teeth and then having to accept minimum wage - even with college education.... ugh.
Dealing with completely ignorant customers was another problem. I could talk your head off with the certifiable IDIOTS we had coming in the shop I worked at. One guy didn't know that tires and wheels came in different sizes, offsets and bolt patterns. As far as he knew, all wheels fit all cars and all tires fit all wheels. I literally had to spend a half hour of my life explaining to this reject why I can't put a 14-inch tire on a 15-inch rim. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have to do that. It's not my job. These customers should have been turned away.... but the place I worked at had a "No turning customers away" policy because it was all about making money. Fleece the customer if you have to.
But you can't explain to an unscrupulous store owner that it's not HIS reputation on the line. He gets to hide behind doors and a corporation. The town will figure out who I am and label me a bad mechanic.
And then you have flat-rate BS just destroying the business. I used to work at a grocery store. I made more than a friend of mine who's a fully certified ASE mechanic. If the shop is dead, he ain't getting paid. I couldn't live like that!!
Would love to start my own business. But to start one.... I'd need millions of dollars. Land, a building, all the tools & lifts and stuff. Then hiring staff..... nope. Not possible.

We had an interesting thing happen yesterday. A guy who has a business next to ours had a problem with his niece's VW Polo that he was driving - it wouldn't start. The EPC light was on and that turned out to be a simple fault - he hadn't out the fuel cap on securely enough and the system acknowledge the lack of pressure. In doing this we hooked up our OBD scanner and got absolutely no power to it. we are electronic manufacturers so this was right up our engineers alley. He found the fuse (had to look on the web for that) and the fuse looked to be intact (it passed a continuity check). He then decided that this was very strange so he did a voltage check across fuses and found that the one supplying the OBD port had input of 12V and output of 9V - that's crazy!. he took it out and looked at it under magnification and the fuse was damaged but still intact. Replacing the fuse brought the OBD back to working. Just shows how empirical you sometimes have to be to discover what is actually wrong.

Just when initiating the accelerator pedal or the car initiates accelerating and the fuelling occurs. It comes from the engine and wasn't present priorly. Any thing I can do in the meantime before I take it to the dealer with the issue?? No check engine light but the fuel economy seems to be poor. Wow it blows my mind someone would drive through multiple states just to have their vehicle worked on!!! Apparently there's still people out there doing quite well financially despite the 40+ year record high inflation! For those that can't afford driving across America and then paying a shop for repairs, your fortunate to be living in a time where DIY car repair video's are a click away along with free shop manuals for download. You can save yourself hundreds if not thousands depending on the vehicle you drive! All you really need is a decent scan tool, mechanic tool set (doesn't have to be fancy/expensive) and a smart phone/computer. Just having these few things will allow you to do 90% of repairs yourself!

Most employees at these dealerships are the type to work at place for less than 6 months and jump to the next one at just about the time all their shotty work starts coming back for call backs in which they stick another guy with the problems and pay him even less to fix it if at all for a come back. E. Everyone else in the shop is more likely to mess with your work to get you fired and there is zero team work. No proper time is spent with the new out of trade school techs to train them properly so they fall into the same habits as above. F. THEY FIRE ALL THE TECHS THAT ARE HONEST, TAKE THEIR TIME TO DO IT RIGHT, AND WONT UPSELL AND LIKE ABOUT THINGS THAT NEED TO BE FIXED LIKE MY FAVORITE WAS UP SELL RE RTVING LEAKY OIL PANS AND JUST LIE ABOUT STUFF LEAKING. I really think you should start keeping a good log of common problems that you’ve repaired on your typical vehicles, and then use that information towards national expansion! Put additional shops in all four corners of the country (Southern CA, PNW, Southeast, Northeast), send your current four mechanics out to run each of these shops, and with all five shops you could be the absolute authority in auto repair!

    • @Khaab00
      @Khaab00 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Given the current amount of work available at his single location, I don't believe he would be interested in expansion yet. There are a lot of barriers of entry he would have to overcome given the different rules and regulations of each state. Besides, ultimately his goal is to be able to maximize his time with friends and family. How much more money is someone willing to chase after in exchange for time? As you age you realize there really is a point where you're comfortable with a certain income level. Any dollar earned over that amount will result in you giving up a minute with your family. He already has the best of both worlds as he controls both his income and his time.

I know owners of Range Rover (one complained it got muddy when he took it up a farm track) expect perfection when they don't get them serviced for years. Like any 100,000 car they need looking after. I know BMW drivers who own 7 series and say they have issues but as they don't sell many of them but loads of series 1 the problems get hidden in the figures. My father was a traffic police officer on our motorways and they loved Range Rovers but they got looked after, issues where fixed that day not 5,000 miles later. Mechanics like to talk down all cars and have an excuse to charge you more, me have all heard them suck their teeth and tell you how a fix will be a problem. I've had a Jaguar XF for 5 years now and the only issue I've had was getting a wheel refinished after I scratched it on a curd (it's a rare wheel colour), every service has just been that a service and it's at 55,000 now. Don't get me wrong the jags of the 70's 80's and 90's were not great but all cars of that age had problems

From my experience with shops in Louisiana (Greater New Orleans area) i can say that the main reason i do my own work is that i simply don't trust a single shop that I've had to deal with.
More than one have caused additional damage (like backing into it and then acting like that dent was there all along).
More than one have tried to scare me into paying stupid money for unnecessary repairs (like $80 for an air filter, that turned out to be clean, or my engine would explode).
    Prices are unreasonable.
    There's no trust.
When deficiencies are pointed out (like leaving vacuum lines disconnected) they refuse any responsibility.

In addition to the twenty various lift trucks and two electric carts, I had a fleet of six bicycles that I maintained to get us from one end of the building to the other. We also carried two-way radios. It could easily take you five minutes of brisk walking to get from one side of the warehouse to the other. Our material racks went up thirty feet, generally three pallets to a section, and five levels counting the floor.
