I always thought 4-3 defenses were better to stop the run and 3-4 were better for pass rushing. Great explanation by Meyer.
I agree with that but I think nothing beats a 4-3 with talented front 4. To be able to get a pass rush with 4 and drop everyone back into coverage is such an advantage. 4-3 has a slightly higher ceiling than 3-4 in my opinion.
@@omieg89 I get what ur saying but the 3-4 allows much more disguise even with a talented front. You have stand up linebackers on the line of scrimmage you can drop back any time to make quarterbacks think differently. You get way more blitz patterns. And you can always migrate to a 4-3 with the stand up LB that plays on the line of scrimmage. 3-4 is all about having hybrid players.
@@ID0XXLook at the greatest defenses in history and most of them were a 4-3 defense or had 4-3 personnel. The Steel Curtain of the 1970’s was a 4-3 defense, the 2002 Bucs and Legion of Boom Seahawks were 4-3 defenses. The 1985 Bears even though they ran a 46 defense had 4-3 personnel (four down lineman and 3 linebackers). I agree with the other guy the 4-3 has a slightly higher ceiling than a 3-4. And you don’t need to disguise anything if your four down linemen are just better than the offense’s linemen.
@@DownfallHitlerParodydisguising blitzes has to be one of the most important aspects of defense, especially simulated pressure. You’re not going to be in a situation very often where you say “oh our d line is better just leave them in their spot all game”. No, you gotta disguise pressure and blitzes and coverages to be a good team
It depends on the players you have and how you wanna that defense
This is high school basics, 3-4 causes the offense to have to make decisions fast. If you haven't practiced against it the offensive lineman will have a nightmare.

Imo opinion it makes it easier to get double teams especially w zone blocking. It also is essentially makes it a 5 man box vs a spread team making running lanes easier

🐻's fan here, we just switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense and I came here wanting to know more about our defensive alignments, schemes, blitz packages and how are pass rushes are going to come now that our whole defensive gameplan has changed with Alan Williams as our DC and Eberflus as our defensive minded HC 🐻👇🏾

Cincinnati runs more of a 3-3-5, but Meyer knows that and it really doesn’t change what he says.
Most teams run that or the 4-2-5 anyway bc of the spread offenses
They still recruit around a 3-4 base though. Same can be said for Bama. They run alot of 425 fronts but with 34 and 245 personnel.
Better example is to watch Zaven Collins & the Tulsa defense

3-3-5 is the best it made West Virginia an elite defense.
What I love about urban he puts together a foundation and culture for his teams. No bs and family atmosphere. Take care of business and work hard. He will change the culture which is most important. Tremendous teacher too. Wish dallas went after him.

Urban ran a 3-3-5 defense at Florida and get blow out by Alabama. Why? 3 front can't defend the power run as efficiently as 4-3 front..
The Chargers need Urban Meyer.

Have to tailor to your roster. Texas A&M for example. Most talented DL group in country. Terrible linebackers. Yet DJ Durkin runs a 3-4 and it kills them.
U better have a great middle d line man in a 3-4. Or it blows.

Yeah, that secondary needs more help, and they aren't getting as much pressure. A properly trained 3-4 might help solve that. As it is, I still can't understand the coaching in the Indiana game, never going to a double high safety, despite bomb after bomb, and Indiana not being able to run the ball. Seriously, why was there never an adjustment to take one out of the box, and add another safety deep? It was mind numbing. In reality, that game should never have been allowed to get that close.
