Have you chatted with Liam from NewWorldReview? He's about the only other big tuber still covering this topic in depth. I think you two could basically finish the story lol
I’m of the opinion that Gyro is the final villain and that the entire dark continent arc is to set up the Gyro Gon confrontation. Gyro started going towards meteor city which we know was turned into this lawless, vulnerable town by Chrollo to give criminals a sense of comfort to lure in his prey. Right now all the phantom troupe members are on the black whale, as well as most powerhouses in the world. The chimera ants killed all the strong people who normally live in meteor city so now that city has never been more vulnerable as a result of several different storylines. Gyro is a chimera ant with powerful will so he will naturally be incredibly strong. Most of the powerhouses in the world are on the black whale aside from the few members of the chimera ant expedition team. Neither the world, nor meteor city, has ever been so vulnerable before. Now we have Gyro who is a powerful chimera ant, a creature with unfathomable potential, loose on a world he wants to burn and essentially no protector, only people he can control. There’s nothing left for him to fear. There are no hunters who can fight him, save for Killua and Morel. I think the entire dark continent arc is a red herring for the Gyro conquest arc and will eventually result in Gon and Gyro confronting each other, either as a two warriors, or as two deeply emotionally disturbed individuals depending on whether Gon regains nen or not.
Togashi also wanted the Greed Island arc to be at least 50% longer, but time and too much Dragon Quest takes it's toll. My bet would be he'll show up in a spin-off by another author(who isn't as obsessed with Dragon Quest) forcing Gon to re-learn Nen to take down maybe alongside Kilua.
I feel like Gyro is gonna find out about alluka and want her power, and that's how killua ends up in the story again, thus forcing gon to try and get new back once finding out what's going on
The black whale one wasn't meant to reach the dark continent, beyond is using to get part of the journey done but final destination was the island with the magical beast as it was the "trick" from the v5 countries
The point of Gyro in the 2011 anime was to mislead the watcher into thinking he was the ant king, making the ant king wholly evil and irredeemable. Thats why they kept the backstory and removed the parts showing he was a separate ant who left the nest.
This is an incredible ending, ties all the loose ends together & is the best option if the story is going to end at all. If the series doesn’t finish, this is my head cannon 😂
I think about Gyro all the time because of that backstory ep and open ending. Also, anytime I watch Boruto, because Kawaki’s early childhood backstory is very, very similar to Gyro’s (and Gyro’s is also similar to Guts’, for that matter).
Meruem had said that humanity would be sent to special reservations because their individuality messed with the ant colony. Meruem said that the QUALITY and QUANTITY would be factors in future consumption. Humanity, as far as we know, is confined to an archipelago in a lake surrounded by the dark continent. Expeditions to the dark continent are only performed by the most skilled hunters and nen users. Could be upwards of 1000 people, but can vary by expedition. Netero has been to the dark continent before, and then willingly elected to fight Meruem. Hunter x Hunter’s world is the chimera ant colony.
I feel like Gon getting his nen back would have him become a specialist. They have the chart for nen types, but how do they know for sure that it is completely true? Also, losing nen could cause Gon to switch types since he effectively has no type currently. Or he just gradually gains his nen back 🤷🏿♂️
Honestly a book would be cool. Togashi wouldn’t have to work as hard as someone else could type it up for him if he’s in so much pain that he can’t do it. I feel like the fandom just wants to see the story finished. Not necessarily in manga form if it’s killing the mangaka to do so

Gyro is the scrouge of humanity. He represents the deepest malice of humanity. He was surrounded by the shadows all his life and they shaped his destiny.
Gon is a genius who finds roundabout solutions for problems when there seems to be no other way. This is the heart of his character that is introduced to us from the very beginning. Him getting his Nen back can happen in countless ways. revisiting greed island is just as easy a way to return his Nen. Likely Gon will apply a use of post mortem Nen to somehow condition his Nen to return, with Killua's or someone else's help.

Funny you should mention the oddity of the random back story of King Gyro in the anime. I remember that when they ended the back story with "then he started a nation", my thought process was "that escalated quickly: how did we get from a to b? And then he was never mentioned again except for that he might have been dead. It seemed so random. A tragic story of someone being physically neglected and harmed by everyone around him as a child and then going off and deciding to start a nation. Seems plausible.
Honestly, i think having a villian that doesnt have any real power is a great idea. We saw during the meruem fight that humans are STILL capable of incomprehensible malice and destruction without nen (the bomb). Having some lelouch level dude (minus the powers) just orchestrating some wild shit while everyone is away is an awesome idea. One of the biggest reasons I think that Gon will become the mc once again is that Kurapika has an ability that's basically only useful for the Phantom Troupe. And it seems to me like this next arc is planning to put to rest the Kurapika vs. Phantom Troupe story arc, so it wouldn't really make any sense for him to remain the main character after this arc (not to mention that Togashi said Kurapika will die at the end of the story so it seems like he might die along with the Phantom Troupe). After those arcs there are a perfect amount of characters with loose threads to make a couple more arcs with. Gon, Zoldyks, Jairo, and whoever didnt leave for the dark continent could all be brought back together for a "Chimera-Ant2 arc" or like some weird "Chimera-Ant x World Government vs. Gon and side characters arc".

It’s been done before. It could be done now. Togashi can pull an overlord. Maruyama has his best friend and trusted illustrator, So-Bin draw everything. He can write Light Novels and teach trusted people to draw it. I know work ethic, ego, pride and money are all at play here. But damn bro!!
Interesting thought I had while watching this: do we know Hisoka isn’t in disguise as one of the phantom troupe? Like imagine he already took out chrollo and is walking around pretending to be him
I don't expect or really want Togashi to let another artist draw the manga, but I'll always support the idea of him continuing the story as a book- and later illustrating said book into a manga at his own pace. At the very least, I hope Togashi can finish this arc (I'd prefer a cliffhanger to a rushed ending). I see it going for another 60 chapters or so.
Personally I would like it if Togashi finished the story of the main four, Gon Killua, Kurapika and Leorio (sorry I don't remember how to spell their names) in the way that you said it of having the black whale return to the V6 countries to save them. And then after that Togashi hands over Hunter X Hunter over to someone he trusts to explore the dark continent either through Gon and the group or a new protaganist/s as a seperate but continuation of the story, Togashi would still be involved but that would mainly be through decision. Like when the chapter is finished he reads it and tells them wether some aspects need to be changed and how, kind of like how dragon ball ended up.
