JBL Xtreme Li-ion Battery Mod - The Right Way

  • Need a new battery for the JBL Xtreme bluetooth speaker?
    In my case i got a used one from Ebay where the battery was dead. It didn't charge anymore, and it was out of warranty.
    I was going to try to convert it to Li-ion batteries the same way as they are used in the JBL Xtreme 2.
    Found and old broken laptop battery with 6 18650 cells in it. Took that apart, and was able to recover four good batteries from that pack.
    Now they are in the Xtreme, and they are doing a good job. Charging works again, and the Xtreme frame needed only a small modification in order to fit the new batteries.
    Have a look, share, comment, like, watch and learn!

    I used 18650s too but only difference between your method and mine is that I didn't have to MOD the battery compartment. But I like how you made batteries look like they came out of a factory, looks a lot more cleaner and neat compared to mine. Awesome work!

      Taylor Soloai my batteries didn’t fit without modifying the case. There was a 1-2mm gap when you put the lid on, and you try to avoid any physical pressure on those batteries. Then again, as long as it works.

    Hi, thank you for this demonstration! I have done the above with some Samsung 3500mAh batteries. How have your batteries held up? Are they still keeping a charge after 4 years? Ive noticed when charging mine that the indicators go from 1-4 very quickly and also from 4-1 very quickly. Have you noticed that your battery level indicator is now less accurate?

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      not really, mine still works great. Make sure you have real Samsung batteries, there are counterfeit cells out there. And it takes only one bad cell in the pack to make the battery pack behave weird.
      And what do you mean by very quickly? How long does it take?

    Thanks for this video. I'm just wondering how to do a li ion battery pack with negative, positive and data cable as well. My Sony XB30 bluetooth speaker has 3 connectors on the battery port. What happens if I make the battery pack without that third (yellow) port?

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      you need to build the battery the same way the old one was. the 3rd connector may be for temperature monitoring, and the whole thing may not work without. But the XB30 battery is already made from 18650s? Does it make sense to just buy a new battery pack?

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We have two pair of batteries. Each pair has 3.7V, and the two pairs are wired in series to achieve 7.4V
      The green wire is the positive of the first pair, and at the same time the ground of the second pair.

      Well when you have a brand new great battery this charge indicator may work. Once the battery was in use for a while it is more and more likely that the 5th LED stays on, because that kind of battery looses its capability to charge 100%. And the 5th LED shows the 100%. I don't think it is a big deal.
