the context of song is, just some days before the marriage of his own daughter the elder brother who was missing or just left home because of ego clash with his brother, met with an accident and died. the younger brother played by mohanlal is actually very loyal to the brother and as per the advice of urvasi, he just hide the fact of accident and death and let the marriage finish, which was one of the greatest wish of his died brother.( as per kerala culture, after death of a close relative there won't be any marriage or such celebrations for one year). he burried his brother as per rituals (burn in fire) and prentend to be happy outside for the sake of marriage, but burnig inside with the fire he ignited for the burrial (symbolically). At that time they asked for a song, but he is in a situation that he couldnt handle the imotion but have to contain that also
Not Mahabharata,it's more like ramayana. The elder brother is in exile,like rama. younger brother is in charge of family as Bharata in ramayan. No further spoilers, mohanlal is sad becoz elder brother is not present for their sister's wedding.

In this movie (mohan lal) , brother died and he is in a position not ti tell hiss family that elder brother is no more because of his brother's daughter is getting married. He doesn't want to make the occasion into funeral home because he promised his brother, that he will successfully fulfill to get his niece married as his brother's wish.
And he has to carry out the funeral ceremony without anyone knowing so that others don't suffer.
That's the song want to interpret.

You guys already watched chithram, in which mohanlal played two carnatic songs with swara ornamentations . Which got attention of people and mohanlal highly praised for song lip sync and expressions. Which leads to 3 consecutive movies by mohanlal's own production company, in all these films mohanlal played as South Indian classical artists.

This trend continued. Even in action oriented movies mohanlals has to play a classical song. It's all about his ability to present lip sync for complicated carnatic music patterns.
Singing style is carnatic classical music. Movie is a adaptation of part of Ramayana (relation between Rama and his brother Bharatha)
How its adaptation of Ramayana? It’s not in my opinion- the movie shows a jealous elder brother (of his younger brother talent) and act out of it, become alcoholic and then finally suicide. Throughout the movie the elder brother torture his younger brother even in death he does it. The last scene of the movie when they ask him to cry that’s extremely emotional scene. So how this movie is an adaptation of Ramayana I don’t know ( may be this song is insinuating story of Ramayanam)

Bharatham is a 1991 Indian Malayalam-language musical drama film written by A. K. Lohithadas and directed by Sibi Malayil. The film was produced by Mohanlal through his production house Pranavam Arts. Bharatham is interpreted as a modern-day adaptation of the Ramayana from Bharatha's perspective.
The film was a critical and commercial success, running for 125 days in theatres. The film won three National Film Awards-Best Actor for Mohanlal, Best Male Playback Singer for K. J. Yesudas for the song "Rama Katha Ganalayam", and Special Mention for Raveendran's music, and five Kerala State Film Awards. On the centenary of Indian cinema in 2013, Forbes India included Mohanlal's performance in the film on its list of "25 Greatest Acting Performances of Indian Cinema".
The movie is a modern take on the epic Ramayana. Bharatha, Rama's younger brother, ruled the country as his agent, worshipping his slippers on the throne, when Rama was in exile for fourteen years. He is the epitome of sacrifice in India.

i was told that the last scene was originally shot , and after the cut was told by the director, Mohanlal was in a very bad state, every hair on his hand, chest and legs was lost, like waxed. It was very painful and he needed medical attention.

It is difficult to appreciate the lyrics with a direct translation, because most parts of it would need much explanation based on the story of Ramayana. For example, mention about Valmiki, the creator of Ramayana, is there. To explain that part, one needs to narrate the story of Valmiki, who went into such deep meditation that ant- hills developed around him and he was not aware of it. A sentence in this lyric is so: the sagely silence was broken again( that is , the sage woke up) and the awakening crossed the barrier of ant-hill- which metaphorically means that he went into a phase of great creativity.

It is not easy to understand the meaning of this song without a basic understanding of the Ramayana story.
Rama, the eldest son of King Dasaratha had to forego his right to ascend the throne of Ayodhya, because his stepmother Kaikeyi trapped Dasaratha in such a way that to keep his word ( as a king is supposed to do), Dasaratha had to send Rama to the forest for many years and give the throne to Bharata, Kaikeyi's son. Rama leaves his own kingdom, without any complaint and quite gracefully, because for him helping his father keep his word was more important than wielding royal power. But Bharata is heartbroken because he loves and respects his elder brother very much. With much sorrow he governs the kingdom but never sits on the throne while Rama is away. He keeps Rama's sandals/footwear on the throne as a an expression of Rama's right to the throne and his own devotion towards Rama. He does puja of the sandals while Rama is in exile
In the movie Bharatham, Mohanlal's character is compared to Bharata of Ramayana because of the respect and love he has towards his elder brother. Although the happenings in the movie are very different from those in Ramayana, the above aspect is brought about. In this song, the puja ( religious ritual of worship) of Sandals is mentioned which in turn expresses Mohalal' character's attitude towards his elder brother.
Some other aspects of the epic are also brought to attention in this song, very poetically.

Ramayana is our history as well as its an ideal portrayal of relationships. There isnt any rivalry between brothers rather its a brotherhood unlike any other. Ramayana is a saga of pure, deep unconditional love not just in a romantic sense. Actor Mohanlal is that ideal brother who is in a plight here even without knowing the plot , the emotion got conveyed to you and thats the touch of a great actor. There's a line in the lyrics that talks about the brotherly devotion and thats one of the themes of Ramayana. Here he is calling out to the divine Rama as well as its the same devotion and love with which he sees his elder brother too. Its symbolism at its best. And its the magic of Indian classical music which is commonly branched into carnatic and hindusthani, both with same strong spiritual structure only differs in style of singing which is roughly categorized as north - south. But its just the diversity of language and intonations thats giving it another shade yet both is of same substance . Here its a proper carnatic approach. Indian classical artforms whether music , dance or percussions have started off from the divine offerings and chants from temples. So it has devotion in its core. Usually carnatic is much spirituality grounded than the latter because it have always been part of temple culture. Hindustani grew out of temples into more of a stylized recreational in approach and got into public stages and performaces from earlier times itself. It have some persian and arabic influences in style from a peroid of invasions yet both have the same indian spiritual foundation. Some claims Hindustani as more improvisational and Carnatic as just structured but that isn't the case. And that is the greatness of it too. If you look at the film songs that too based of the same structure of ragas of the classical music yet with the flexibility.Both provides great ground for flexibility and improvisations and its not any different from one another in its foundation.
Bharatham is interpreted as a modern-day adaptation of the Ramayana {an Indian epic) from Bharatha's perspective. (Rama and Lakshmana are the two brothers here. Lakshmana- the younger one devoted himself to Rama - elder brother) since childhood and accompanied him to the fourteen year, serving him and Sita (Rama's wife) endlessly. Here in the film Gopi, Mohanlal resembles the Lakshmana. How, in the absence of his elder brother, Gopinathan takes the responsibility of the family and hides his griefs is the core of the story.
Gopi is in love with Devi (Urvashi) who is the sister of Ramani. Raman (Nedumudi Venu, the film character's name is also Raman) reigns in the family and the society with his music. But he turns into alcoholism. Despite several attempts by family members to make him give up the habit and several failed assurances to his family members, he is unable to give up the habit.
In this particular song, Gopi, learning that Raman died in an accident, is forced to conceal the truth because of their vocally disabled sister's marriage. Gopi gets lot of moral support with Devi, who also knows the truth, only both of them know the truth. Gopi is being compelled to sing the scheduled singing program. Gopi's trauma reaches penultimate when his family learns of Raman's death and that Gopi was concealing it. Everything ends fine when the family understands his intentions. The movie ends while Gopi begins to train Appu in their musical legacy.
Through the song, Gopi gives a tribute to his dead elder brother because one of the family member's marriage is also happening that day. If he speaks the truth, marriage will not be possible in such situation. So, the whole tension evolves because of that too.

I am not sure if you will get a good version of the movie with subtitles to watch. Explaining the song background below(Spoilers ********)
The background of the song is the wedding of the sister of Mohanlal and Nedumudi venu. Mohanlal realized about the death of his brother just before the wedding. Everyone thinks he went for pilgrimage (based on a note) and he doesn't have it in him to correct them especially given the situation. He thinks they can believe he is happy and will return some day.
The whole movie is about the relationship between the brothers. This is towards the last part of the movie.
