Its not a horror movie. May be the best psychological thriller movie in 90s Indian film industry. 3 great National Award winning artists; Shobhana- Mohanlal- Suresh gopi in one frame ❤
Proud to be a malayali, and don't know how many times I watched this movie, Shobhana did this character unremarkable and won the national award for best actress.
Eventhough she is a great dancer, in the movie she as original character does the steps of the dance imperfectly, like the character if the film. But her imagination persona is seen to be doing them perfectly. That is Shobhana's acting prowess
Have you come and visit me atleast once, they pain behind these words still haunting me and fill my eyes with tears. An unmatched performance by the Great actress Sobhana.
This is one of the first movies in Indian Cinema, which treated the split personality as a medical condition rather a ghost attack and communicated it well to the viewers, which helped in breaking many taboos about the disease and people started thinking differently on such conditions, that a psychiatrist is the option in such cases.
Shobhana's dance movements as an obsessed person and as in her imagination is fantastic. What was crazily challenging was to dance on that floor as it was polished with oil!!!
Shobhana is one of the enormously talented actress in india. ❤ and a wonder ful dancer . And the movie manichithrathazhu is a cult classic. Good reaction.
The film is one of the best movie from malayalam industry. Performances are amazing by every artists and the director Fasil is the real craft man. We r very proud of each crews behind the make..
The movie came out at a specific time when the mental sciences were only just getting known, and not quite mainstream, so the idea of split personalities/DID, etc was introduced as a concept with this movie. The terms may be dated, as the 'gold medal from America' kind of stuff - but that was what was impressive to Keralaites at the time, as in India, every year we have common entrance exams for a bunch of academic fields, and the ranks are published openly - so it's possible to get a gold medal/1st rank! Not to mention that specific academic fields for mental health were not quite known lol. The fact that the movie played on subjects that were previously always surrounded by mystery/superstitions kind of made it relatable - I have visited the village my family is from. There was an old, huge house, a temple nearby, a pond no-one went to coz of weird stories, random small old-timey mysteries and stories.... there are just so many elements, even in the comedic routines, that echo cultural things - there are certain rituals you can do in certain temples that might ask you to do stuff/not to do stuff - so that concept of Innocent not speaking for a certain time until he finishes a task, is actually relatable and understood when the more ridiculous aspects of it are underlined. Not to mention the movie was not advertised as horror, just as a thriller. The whole idea was that regular village life, with people having annoying neighbours who got their stuff dropped down a well and asks you to help, petty quarrels between relatives, enjoying poetry competitions on the riverbank, rolling your eyes at thse ridiculous people who comes in from overseas with their strange ideas, etc, get disrupted because an unspoken village more got broken. So it's not that the movie is a strict genre of one or the other, it's like a slice of village life. Because life can't be divided into one genre - the fact that you get scared because of unexplained happenings in your home doesn't mean the neighbours won't annoy you, or that you won't laugh when ridiculous situations happen. My two cents, as a malayalee.
10:47 It's not just her makeup.. if you watch closely, her dance moves in real life are awkward and clunky, because she's not a trained dancer, but in her fantasy, she moves much more gracefully.
thanks for reacting to what is possibly one of the greatest songs in the history of malayalam cinema! You guys have a knack for understanding the core of the story despite the obvious regional artistic choices and differences!
This song is one of my favourites from Malayalam movies. Shobhana did such a great job. I agree that the mixed-genre might confuse non-indian viewers but we are used to it and hence that was not an issue in Kerala. I love these song reaction series you are doing and keep them coming. :)
whenever we think of serious classical indian dance form, no other one comes to mind first than Bharatnatyam, then others like Kathak, but all classical dance form has their roots in ancient performing arts text Natya Shastra by Bharat Muni. Sanskrit literature is very rich not just the popularly known vedic-upanishad literature, the 2 epics and puranas. But also fables, epic and lyric poetry, dramas, prose novels during 1 cen ad to 12 cen ad, like Panchatantra, Kumarasambhava, Mehgadoot, Shakuntala by Kalidas, Mrcchakatika, Kadambari, Kathasaritsagar based on long lost Brihtkatha, Sukasaptati
Hai friends so happy to see your video of Indian ever legend film. I am from India and pursuing my Doctoral research in USA. I appreciate your enthusiasm and pronunciation in Malayalam.Keep going 👍
The song was mostly in Tamil , except the male vocal towards the end which is in Malayalam. You just saw the best part of the movie again. I won't recommend another go at the full movie given its done once :)
Malayalam films are known for their strong commitment to portraying real-life situations, making them relatable to the experiences and events we encounter. Translating these movies or adding subtitles may diminish their true essence, and as a result, individuals who are not Malayalam speakers or those born and raised abroad might not fully appreciate the films in the same way that native Malayalam speakers do.
*Hai Dears... Its Sonu Antony. From Kerala. First of all I thanking you to Chose this Wonderful Song to Reaction..... 🥰💐.....the Director name is not Faize..... Its Fazil sir... And this Movie is a simbel of all we 80's kids fear...... And in fact there is no any movie came out yet to make us enough sacred (lots of movie released )it was not a film it was a phenomenon ❤...*
To understand how Malayalees view this movie you need to understand a bit about Malayalam culture and the environment in which this movie was made. It is a place where people have very strong religious beliefs and you will find many stories, myths, etc. about bad spirits (e.g. kuttichathan, yakshi, etc.) and ghosts in the cultural lore. Over the last 100 years or so with the advent of science and spread of education these ideas or stories are not talked about so much. I remember during my grandmother's time and the stories she used to tell us - I found it a bit scary when I was a child. There are also a lot of religious rituals, prayers, etc. which have been specifically designed/created to scare off these spirits and ward off any harm from them. Even today you will find priests in Kerala who can/will perform such rituals. So, for people who lived in such an environment such a movie will be quite scary - at least it was in 1993. Today, we live in the age of information overload and things have changed a lot - such dark themes and ideas dont have so much hold over people.
The mansion is in the capital of southern Kerala princely state travancore, where the successors of king Marthanda varma resided and ruled. The state never fully surrendered to British, partially kept it's self governance by giving annual tributes to the British.
@@sudharmmacp8216 a few scenes shot 🥃 n hill palace.. but major location was padnabhapuram kottaram... Near Thiruvananthapuram, but presently in Tamilnadu state
@@consiglieretomhagen9350Most scenes were shot at hill palace. Few scenes shot at padmanabapuram. Few scenes were shot at cherupushpam studio, udayamperoor near tripunithura
What I like about this film is the amalgamation of the rich indian culture, traditions, belief systems with the academic/scientific explanations. It leaves room for the dualism of the two spheres. Ganga's character experienced abandonment issues and loneliness that turned her into a dysfunctional adult. Her parents and husband failed to meet her emotional needs. She buried herself in books and poetry as a means of escapism. She fell in love with the poet Chandu as she found him relatable and someone who could understand her at the level she craved for. The scientific side shows ganga using her alter ego to get what she wants (freedom from her husband and a lover in chandu) and the supernatural side shows the story of a reincarnation or posession of a human to act based on the supernatural. I also love all the details and continuity in the movie - there is a reason for every small thing or dialogue. For example- How Dr Sunny insists on taking Allie's bicycle for the long ride to uncover Ganga 's past or the reason Ganga loses it when she's told she can't go to get Allie's wedding jewelry
Important part is that Sobhana is professional dancer she has a dance school. She had to dance both as a professional in yellow dress and an absolute novice in white dress.. It was difficult she said in an interview
The thing about subtitles is, the character shobana plays sings in tamil (as Nagavally is Tamil) while the hero sings in Malayalam, as the languages are little bit similar they sync together well. Takeaway : only the tamil is subtitled.
Here we can see Sobhana's character didn't learn dancing and we can see that in her imagination she is dancing like a professional but in reality she is trying hard to imitate
This is classic movie released in 1994./1995. Many directors remade this in many other Indian language, but unfortunately all are not up to the mark. Do watch full movie.. And enjoy..
This is one of the best movie ever produced in India. You just to need to know the traditions and atmosphere, once you understand the concept, you'll go insane.
No Offense, but movies like that, nobody else in the world can really understand all the nuances of the movie except Malayalees. So, what you are saying is totally understandable. The movie had a theatrical run for 365 days.
Actually in those days subtitles are mostly wrong ...how can u able to understand those movies?? U have to know the culture and traditions and believes to understand those movies.... in kerala each part is different with language dialects and custom .....its very cultural and traditional rich place ....its also effects because to understand those movies u need minimum knowledge about those...
The film is counted as one of the best classics made in Indian Cinema
