- Triumph will revamp the iconic Daytona name in a new sportbike aimed at the burgeoning middleweight category.
Using the Trident 660 as its base the new Daytona will take on bikes such as the Yamaha YZF-R7 and Aprilia RS660, although unlike the rest of the category, will do so with a three-cylinder engine.
Triumph’s new Daytona will produce a claimed 17 percent more power and nine percent more torque than the Trident 660. The company is claiming a very healthy 93 hp at 12,250 rpm and 50 lb-ft of torque at 9250 rpm, with 80 percent of that torque available at 3125 rpm. The Trident motor has come in for fairly serious revision to achieve those numbers, with a new forward mounted intake, three new 44 mm throttle bodies, new cylinder head, longer lift and higher duration camshafts, revised pistons, crankshaft and bearings all being fitted.
The six-speed gearbox has also come in for revision, with a shorter first, second, and third gear, the same fourth gear, and a taller fifth and sixth gear now present for a higher top speed. There will also be an optional Triumph up and down quickshifter as part of the accessory catalogue.
The electronics include three riding/ECU modes of Sport, Road and Rain modes, with traction control and ABS levels integrated into the ECU modes. This will also be the first Triumph that features emergency braking warning, which flashes the indicators to warn other motorists of you coming sliding into the corner (hopefully fully in control). The warning system is activated once 6g has been measured under braking, so it won’t come on unless you’re really squeezing the lever.
The new Daytona is a far cry from the ultra-focused 675/765 Daytonas that led the supersport categories for the best part of 15 years, with more relaxed ergonomics enabling what Triumph hopes will be a more comfortable ride on the street.
And so, we headed to Spain to sample the good for ourselves.

Triumph should of built this bike and an R version with all the goodies
I wish
Wouldn't be surprised if that happens but it won't be for a few years.
Seems like this and the MT07 have bad suspension until you you throw some adjustable suspension at them
As others have said, it’s no Daytona 675 (or 765). It’s clearly built to a price point. But I think it has to be credited for a likely much more interesting engine than the ubiquitous parallel twins that it runs against. It clearly needs some stuff but I think it could make a pretty fun bike with a few tweaks.
All the reviews I've seen on this bike say the suspension is too soft, but how about for someone who wants to use this bike in the city, or just on some tame twisty roads? Like if you're not going over 80kph on the twisties over 140kph on the highway it should be adequate? I don't want a race bike but I want a nice sounding bike with enough torque to accelerate faster than a fkn corolla
This would work just fine for you. Depends on your weight. I'm 92kg so probably too heavy for the standard springs but for just cruising around it should be fine.
0:44 what's that exhaust..?? 😮
I think it might be a U.S. specific model.
@@cyclenews cool, coz I've never seen one like this, not even in any video 🤷🏻
Triumph has gone to it's 2005's daytona 650 engine base to make it compatible for current demand same design & engine
This or the gsx 8r?
Probably go the Suzuki if we're comparing stock bikes. If they're modded, it might be a different outcome.
Had the same question. Would make for a nice comparison video.
What’s the top speed of daytona 660?
No idea. We only rode it on tight Spanish mountain roads and didn't get the chance to really wind it out.
Thank you for sharing,
Do you think Daytona 660 is more powerful than the R7?
@@Lalitgrg98 It definitely has more top-end than the R7. The R7 is probably a match for it below 6000 rpm, though.
can you compare this to the zx4rr that you tested at willow ?
Not really. That 400 was a monster. It had about $10,000 worth of engine mods thrown at it! In stock trim, the Triumph would crush it. But that Graves bike was something else...
what do you think a better track bike is ? zx7r 2001 with front fork kit and penske shock rearsets and diablo tires or set up zx4rr@@cyclenews
@@MrBolioclyde Those are two pretty different bikes! I love me a ZX-7R, one of the best looking bikes ever made. The 4RR would for sure be easier to ride, though.
Triumph should have gone stiffer suspension.
The dash is the only ugly thing on this bike
So many words to say it sucks.
It doesn't suck, just needs some bits to make it really good.
@@cyclenews I disagree. I own a 675 and this is a disgrace. It's about time journalists start bashing those pathetic bikes as they should. There's nothing exciting about those bikes, there's nothing ground breaking, suspensions are better on my mountain bike and so on. It's an ok bike to go grocery shopping and that's an insult to the Daytona name and legacy. My 2 cents of course just my opinion. Bring back truthful pain.
This is mild version of Daytona
Triumph killed daytona
Where is this front fork kit found?
Peter Hickman is developing it. It might not be on sale right now but it is 100% going to be soon. I'd expect it to be once the British championship kicks off.
