    When you were singing from dark to light, I don't know if you heard it or not, but there were prevalent overtones. If you can't already, it would be very easy for you to learn how to sing using overtones.

    Dude just watching this and the first one, I can really do it now! Bflat 1 is too high for me to sing in subharmonic though, yet too low to sing in my chest voice (B natural is as low as I can go) but my Ab1 sounds HELLA thick. Thanks man!

    Hello David, haven't found you on FB - there must be hundreds of David Larsons there. Your videos on the subject resonate very well with me, if you'll pardon the double entendre.
    I have an interest in basso singing. Long time ago when I was a member of the Royal Australian Air Force Air Training Corps, NCO training in which I found myself roaring at a bunch of squaddies, forced me to go hoarse. That was at the age of 17. I temporarily lost my voice, but when it recovered, I found my voice had broken. It had transformed not gradually but suddenly, from boy-tenor to basso profondo and proved to have 90 dB power, too. I loved it. Singing with it was tremendous fun. Over subsequent decades, I lost it through lack of use and it sort of returned to the tenor-baritone range.
    Lately over the last three years (some 40 years later), I have been singing karaoke for recreation. Back in my younger days, karaoke didn't exist. With this activity, I have been working towards getting the formerly mighty basso voice back. I have managed to hit E0 in true pitch once or twice, though not consistently. As I understand it, that is below the classic basso profundo range, so I call it "ultra basso", but the former richness of tone, the depth of resonance and the 90 dB of power have still not yet returned. In the Air Force, it seemed a natural consequence of using the voice constantly at maximum volume to the point of stressing it (perhaps this forces the vocal cords to adapt and the user to change his manner of delivery?) where I learned to bring it up from somewhere in the lower abdomen and mix notes in the throat and head to produce beat frequencies. I understand these to be the Fry notes. They happen very much as you demonstrate in your video - my spoken voice is normally in the same range as yours.
    I've got the "placement" tip for increasing richness and volume by resonating in the nasal cavity - great tip and thanks!!!
    But whilst I want to go farther and farther down the scale towards 4 Hz (I can handle Lee Marvin's Wanderin' Star, though it needs to sound better), I also want to extend my upper range, firstly to preserve the highest notes I can presently hit in the mid-tenor register, rather than lose them as I reach lower; then recover the full tenor register I once had in my intermediate years without losing the ultra basso range. Except for the limited range of notes, I can turn on a fairly good operatic tenor tonality or even "pure" tenor like Don McLean's. Within the limits of my present range, the vocal style is versatile - I can imitate Don McLean, Billy Fields, Elton John, Billy Joel, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, Ronan Keating, Paul Robeson, Ray Stevens and others quite respectably. Basically, I want to be able to sound like J.D. Summer, or like Andrea Boccelli or Luciano Pavarotti, as I choose. The problem is that my larynx tightens up if I attempt the highest notes in that tenor register too often. Then beyond that, I would like to extend it further.
    Tips from you on extending the range in both directions would be greatly appreciated, as would any tips on avoiding "larygeal seizure" and on recovering the power. There's no parade ground or bunch of marching squaddies to roar at, any more.
    Another thing I would appreciate greatly, if you have any to offer, is tips on songs for bass singers and octavists, other than Gospel. Good ones are not easy to find.

      @@howtobicycle3853 Try switching the placement around. My voice goes down to an F2, but I've done subs down in the 0th octave. For me, going lower has to do with airflow control and placement, more specifically it feels lighter on the airflow and more compressed in the upper part of the throat the lower I go.
      Find a day your subs are strong, relax your body as much as you can and try switching those factors around :)

      +David Larson As much as possible, it is good to sing with a low larynx, and to use more support rather than raising the larynx as we sing higher. Especially for basses, but also for tenors who want to expand their high chest range and low subharmonic register, controlling the larynx is one of the most important steps.

I mean if my chest lowest is a E2 and i could achieve, say, F1 with technique (fry/other) and I'm supposed to sing something that contains notes from both spectrums, say F2 to G1, how could I manage to keep the notes from sounding weird like coming from 2 different persons ? Trained oktavists seem to be managing OK but others seem to fail in that .

    When going from dark to light, is the vowel sound changing only because of your lips, or because of other stuff too?

    • @davidlarson3905
      @davidlarson3905  8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      No, it's more so internal. The lips are kind of just a by-product.
      This is kind of hard to describe, but you almost have to imagine the sound as a ball of sound. Like a physical ball. That ball is the spot where you are resonating the sound at.
      You can change the shape of the inside of your throat, and move your soft pallet up and down to change the position of this "ball". The higher you place the ball, the brighter the sound will be. The deeper in your throat you place it, the darker and more buried the sound will be.
      Experiment a bit with this idea, it should start making sense after a bit.

      Actually.. It is possible. Try it and you'll know it, in fact i already seen a video that a girl (Contralto) do it, and hit the Bb1 with subharmonics

    My problem is that I can hit notes at around C0 to E0 with just my normal voice. I may already be doing the subharmonics without me knowing but I have a hard time projecting any notes under Bflat1

      Oh nice. That's where I live. Your tutorials are very helpful. I have been throat singing for a long time now and I can usually do an A1, but this is really helping me with just singing with false chords. (I need to learn this because I am a tenor haha)

      @@tonchette7993 that's good to hear. Maybe after throat singing you can hit subharmonic easier. I was able to get it a few times but I don't think I could ever pull it off on demand, which is what I am going for.

    did anyone ever comment that this technique sounds like a digerido (i believe from Australian aborigines )

    • @kerrycoyle6514
      @kerrycoyle6514 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The qualities of resonance are closely similar to didgeridoo. Aborigines who play it use a variety of tricks. Mainly, they use the same "rasperry" you would put to the mouthpiece of any brass instrument like a trumpet; and the other thing they often use is "groaning" or "growling" - Tuval, Kargyraa or maybe pure false cord resonating. The resonant length, wall thickness and other properties of the wood, species and so on do the rest.

    This is not basso profundo or oktavist singing, neither is it really harmonic singing. If you are naturally a tenor why not stick to that? If you do master real harmonic singing, good for you, let's hear it.

    Gotta say, to anybody who fancies themselves a bass, if you have to darken the voice to sound "bassy", you ain't a bass, you're just a wannabe. I work with professional basses regularly, and they just open their mouths, and a massive, dark sound rolls out. Even when they sing bright, or in the "mask" it's still deep and dark.
    This placement stuff is nonsense, sorry to say.
