About the part when sadness comforts bing bong by being sad with him. Joy thought that in order to not be sad you have to be happy. And she tried to make him not be sad by trying to make him happy. But when sadness sat next to him she didn't try to make him happy. She empathized with him and helped him be sad. Sometimes when you're sad you need someone to make you more sad (In an empathetic sort of way) so you can get it all out. It's a lot easier to be happy if you don't have any bottled up tears weighing you down.

I agree with this a lot. My family is so hell bent on wanting to see me always happy to the point I try to hide all the other emotions I have. I was ostracized by my school before over a thing I didn’t even do. This had led me to only giving emotions of indifference or apathy. I wore a always happy facade at home but when alone or at school I was depressed. I had a handful of times it was probably best to off myself but what I really needed was someone who just comforted me in my sadness and not tell me to stop crying or stop being sad.
That person who was like sadness to me was one of my teachers. I talk to her on occasion about my life and how I truly feel. Sometimes more than what I tell my mom or family. My family shuts my emotions other than happiness out, pretending everything is fine but actually is shit. My teacher wasn’t telling me to just stay positive and find the light in the darkness. She told me that it was fine to be sad and let it all out through tears. I hide the fact I cry now since whenever I cry, they said it’s petty I’m crying over such things.

@@theeleventh805gamer7 Nobody should tell anyone that it’s not ok to be sad, especially your own parents. I totally get how it must be confusing to have parents who aren’t good people. From the moment we were born we are led to think that our parents are perfect people. Of course that only lasts about 3 years but even then there’s always going to be a part of you that wants to think they’re good people. Even if they aren’t. Always remember that anyone can be a band person to anyone, even your own parents. I suggest you confront them about this, let them know that they aren’t being good parents by teaching you not to cry. They need to teach you HOW to cry, and that involves letting you cry and helping you cry. You need to confront them head on about this. But remember even that may not work, you may plan every comeback for an argument but they still don’t change, and that’s a result that you may need to be prepared for. But it’s better to at least try, you never know what might happen.

It's called Validation. Sadness validated what Bing Bong was feeling. The reason that trying to make someone happy when they're sad often doesn't work is because that's actually invalidating how they feel. And it works the same in our own heads too - when we acknowledge our feelings, when we say hey actually I feel sad right now. That is very powerful. It's more powerful that pushing it away and pretending you don't feel what you're feeling - that's just gaslighting yourself. Acknowledging how you feel gives you the space to just feel it. And move through it. No feeling is final so it won't last forever. But pushing it away and denying it takes up so much unnecessary energy and is not really helpful. It's too bad society loves to do this :( pretend we don't have feelings and we should all be happy or change how we feel. It's okay to have feelings and feel what you're feeling.

Inside Out was released when I was around Rileys age, and the movie hit very close to home. My parents were getting a divorce, I was going to a new school, I was even living in the bay area. I felt like I had to be the one who was happy in the family, because everyone else was so sad, even though I was being confronted with all these new emotions with no idea how to deal with them. But Inside Out helped show me that I was suffering from signs of depression, and that it was okay if i wasn't feeling happy all the time. It gave me the courage to talk to my parents and get a therapist, and it inspired me to become a artist, which I still am today.
One day I want to create a story as emotionally moving as inside out.

Hi, I saw your comment four years ago just now. I’m writing a memoir about my life. Think of it as a rated R version of Inside Out, along with dealing with CPTSD, ADHD, and Situational Depression, as well as developing Social Anxiety. Anyway, I’m very interested in you joining my project once my memoir is published, to get it turned into an adult cartoon, if you’d like to join me that is. I’m eager to hear back from you when you get a chance to respond to my reply.

This is extremely well-argued and well-constructed. I personally think that all of our emotions are our most important ones: we just need to know when one is needed over another. That's emotional intelligence for you.

Notice that her childhood isn't completely left behind, Family Island comes back, as do one or two other islands. That's what never growing up means, there are some things that should be kept for your whole life, you have to learn what those things are.

I was eight or maybe nine years old when this movie came out, I cried at the end, but I didn’t understand the weight of it and what everything was leading up to, I watched the movie a few more times after that, mainly in 2017 with my mom because we had gotten a dvd of it then. I understood it better then, but it really didn’t hit me until now. I’m thirteen now and I got the idea to watch it with my mom because I had seen it on Disney plus. This movie really does get better the older you get. After have gone through depression myself it’s a lot easier to understand the concepts. This movie is a masterpiece, I would call this the best Pixar movie of the 2010’s.

  • @Secretzstolen

I would love a part 2, that shows an expanded version of more feelings, and also shows just how vital every emotion is. And even how they speak to us through our body. All of our emotions are vital - they all tell us something and are meant to help us. They are our guidance through the world in this life. Anger tells us something is wrong and we need to stand up for ourselves and not tolerate something. Sadness teaches us what matters to us and what we cherish. Disgust keeps us safe from things that can make us ill, or things that aren't in line with our beliefs/goals. Fear tells us to weigh the pros and cons, to consider possible outcomes we may not have thought of, and to reconsider whether we are putting ourselves in a good position or not. Joy tells us what we love, what direction we should head in, what we want more of in our life.

    • @Joy6168

I loved this movie. I tend to shove down the sad or painful feelings because I don’t want to deal with them but they just end up storing up in me until I’m depressed or explode. It’s so hard to acknowledge and express my feelings! It’s helpful to know that God created emotions and emotions aren’t bad. They’re like little kids in us that we are responsible for teaching and raising up to be mature.

I appreciate that you grab almost all details to back up your point, like the clothes she wears. You don't take that kind of things for granted, and that helps me appreciate even more the film. That's basically what I love about these videos, that sometimes I really like a movie and I don't know why... I can tell when the editing, acting, photography, etc. are good, but that's not enough. You can try to convince someone to like something, which is easy. I mean, there was a million people talking to their friends about Breaking Bad, but not even half of them understood why they loved it in the first place.
    Thank you for this, Nick.

It's okay to optimistic about sadness
    and optimistic about happiness.
Let yourself mourn, but let yourself rejoice.
Emotional intelligence is understanding why you feel the way you do
and understanding why others feel the way they do.

I love this movie so much. But I kind of wish they would’ve covered more serious topics like depression or your inner critic. Maybe in a sequel they’ll all leave headquarters to fight this voice, taking over Riley’s mind, and turning everything black and white.

It's that you can always feel sad and that you got to let go of something like your childhood and that sometimes it takes one emotion to feel anothe. the girl feels joy trying to make her happy and avoiding the fact that she's growing up. But when joy and the girl are avoiding that she's sad and and trying to fix it with happiness. Sometimes it takes sadness to help sadness to let your emotions out.....

If you never feel anything negative then you won't truly understand the value of the positive. it's why despite the hard times the payoff always feels good in the end in comparison to quick gratification that leaves you hollow afterwards.

I didn’t like joy for half of film when I first watched this in middle school but as I got older. I realized Joy was never mean yeah she was annoying but to me she’s actually supposed to a representation of toxic positivity. Joy rarely let the other emotions have control over what Riley is feeling. Joy constantly had to take over because she needs to have Riley to be happy at all times even when she not supposed to be. Joy was also pretty selfish and inconsiderate to others especially sadness only wanting to maintain a happy smile. There nothing wrong with being happy or having a good time but when someone who isn’t happy or isn’t in the mood to smile and when you’re constantly trying to force someone to smile and continue to bother the person to be happy because you don’t want to acknowledge they’re sad. You can come off as really annoying and insensitive.

Yeah I think you looked a little too deep into some things that aren't necessarily a part of what you're claiming that inside out is about. My perspective is that everybody in the world has what I call a primary emotion hence the reason why dad has the angry primary mom has the said but Stern character leading headquarters. Riley Joy is her primary emotion which is why Joy is in charge. I think the point that you're really missing is that Joy matured understanding that all emotions are equal in importance in a person's life. Sadness was just being held back due to the extremes and Riley life. Think about this she's being uprooted from her home where she feels safe in Wisconsin. moving to San Francisco the unknown and she had expectations on what her house was going to look like what her room was going to look like and all of those were let down. Then the stress of her parents not getting along like they usually do. So really because of her emotional immaturity and not understanding life she's having a trouble with acceptance. Which if you go through being sad sometimes it's good to be able to look at things for what they are which is really what the character of sadness does Joy's not being silly Joy just doing her job and trying to keep things light hearted and in perspective. This is one of my favorite movies also but your take on it is kind of way off in left field in my opinion. Bing bong I believe is just one of those things that they used in the movie to accelerate the characters linking back too far memories from Riley childhood to kind of give us more of the background going back to my original thought that she's being taken out of her safe haven in Wisconsin
