  • On a recent service call it was discovered that the compressor was tripping the motor protector. The compressor was vibrating and drawing an over current on a McQuay Chiller.

Very interesting to hear that moisture makes them trip .
We do have them motor protectors over here as well , in fact , most of the scrolls I work on have them , but we call them Kriwans , from the brand that makes them .
I don't quite get why they wired them in series though , the ones I work on are wired independently , so that if one trips , it trips that particular compressor and you get the alarm for that one only and you know which compressor is the problematic one .
I honestly didn't know about that moisture issue though , that's very good to know .
Thank you for sharing , that's a good one innit 👍.

Yes heavy rain will cause them to trip intermittently and I agree the should be rewired in paralell

I myself wouldn't convert the refrigerant. Especially if you're going to convert it from Mineral to POE. Remember that POE oil is made up of alcohol and acid. With that being said it will take an old system and clean it out. The new oil will turn completely black with contaminants and will have to be changed more than once. It will also attack any rubber seal and O Rings that is not compatible causing leaks everywhere. I would only use drop in refrigerants that use Mineral oil.

There's already POE oil circulating within from a previous compressor change, the new comp came with it. The problem with drop ins is that they don't work well with large double pass chiller bundles and some TXV and liquid line up grades are needed.

Might sound crazy, but you should consider cutting or capping those threaded rods sticking up from the curb. Get property management or whomever involved to get that resolved. Probably won’t happen, but there’s always that chance of slipping or tripping and impaling. Just looking out for a fellow HVAC bro...

Did comp 6 pump down by itself under the disabled command. Thx

The conversion to another refrigerant looks to be very involved. What oil does this system have? Mineral or other? Be waiting for your video.

It has a mineral base but some POE as well from a past compressor change. The comp came shipped with POE

What refrigerant have you been using to convert systems and have found successful operations. And what components did you had to change/adjust to again achieve successful operation.

Haven't really done any yet, I was hoping that TDX20 would work but not in this case with the bundle. Might go to 407c on this

How come the tdx20 won't work, was just wondering because they say it's the only r-22 replacement. Is it because you'll have to change too many components to get it to work.

With the compressors having a common oil line between them do you lose the oil from the other compressors when changing one out?
