Don't forget Hollywood tried to get a mandatory tax/fee added to every internet bill. So everyone would pay for piracy whether they did so or not. That would've been a heck of a precedent & bonanza for a private industry.

They already have this on USB sales in some countries, because Hollywood claims it's used to illegally transfer copyrighted data. The tax is called the "You must be a pirate tax" by it's opponents.

Mega upload was In essence just a warehouse to store files, imagine going to prison because you rent a house and it’s occupants store drugs there. The internet providers are the ones that allow the traffic to move over the internet, one could argue they are as much to blame. I’m not saying he didn’t know it was being used for illegal files, nor that he should have made more efforts to prevent this. But really he was picked off to make an example. I mean you can get illegal, pirated software from google drive accounts, and no one seems to be taking google on.

Surprised that the police didn't find illegal pr0n and a copy of Mein Kampf. Maybe there's a culture difference between NZ police and US police.
Hollywood loosing €500 million is just one Indiana Jones movie. How do you even lose money on a money printer?
In my book Kim was kind of a Internet hero for a very short time. He seemed flaky, he would create very simple web sites and not update them. In retrospect it fits with his persona, he's a starter not a finisher.
He's a real life Eric Cartman and I'm impressed with his tenacious attitude towards breaking the law ever so slightly. I wish I had some of that.
I don't think he's a terrorist though, that's just a fake label that FBI put on him to make it seem like they were doing something important; "look at us we're fightin' crime & stuff".

He was doing things the right way as megaupload grows up... 9 months before the raid, Megaupload implemented that feature where copyright owners could claim the rights of its content for files that were shared...

4:50 - That's a US centric view. In Germany, it's absolutely not the case that you would give your criminal records to a employer, and they can't just google it either. For jobs that require security clearings, sure there you need to provide such records. But there aren't many of those in the grand scheme of things anyway. So, absolutely no issue for him considering job prospects.

Probably worth mentioning that NZ as a whole isn't "neighbourly" like you see in American TV shows. I don't know my neighbours names. I'll wave and say hi occasionally if we walk passed each other but that's about it. So sending someone a letter like that would just result in a reaction of "wtf is this dickhead".
I remember meeting Kim Dotcom at the Black Ops 2 release. I worked for JB HiFi at the time (an electronics, music and games retailer). Management knew he was coming and we had extra staff on specifically for it. Dude came in for the midnight launch, brought several copies of the edition that came with the drone. The entertainment industry consortium is well-known for overreaching the amount of money "lost" due to piracy. They claim the full retail price for every download. In reality, people buy discounted copies, or wait a few more months to watch it included with a subscription, gather with friends for a group watch (splitting the streaming cost), or don't bother watching at all.
That is, the amount of money they would have gotten had piracy not happened is a small fraction of what they are claiming.

Unless MegaUpload openly condoned and supported piracy, refusing to work with legitimate takedown requests, there was no charge to be made. File sharing service is perfectly legal. The company cannot be blamed for what files the users upload. File sharing is not exclusively for piracy. The whole thing is bs. They muscled him down with bs law just because he resembles an icon that they hate, even though he himself doesn't do anything illegal.
