    I SPECIFICALLY asked for this in Atari's 2600+ youtube announcement, and they responded to me positively. The 7800 was my first ever console. To anyone asking, this is specifically for us who are nostalgic for the metal bezel and color spectrum bar, not the wood grain. Lol 😊 I'm pre-ordering this!!

    • @SumDumGy
      @SumDumGy 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I’m nostalgic for that 7800 look. It was my first console, too. They kind of missed the mark trying to recreate here, I think.
      Nostalgia isn’t going to get me.
      I already got the 2600+.
      I don’t like the strip.
      I don’t want a wireless controller.
      Sorry to say they completely missed me with this one. A 5200+ though, in which I’ve never owned or played, that I’d get excited over.

    • @SevenlivesDesigns
      @SevenlivesDesigns 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @SumDumGy yeah I hear ya. I wish the strip was a bit thinner the way I remember it. But I know I specifically skipped the 2600+ hoping this would come out, and I'm glad it did. It's close enough for me.

    • @SumDumGy
      @SumDumGy 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@SevenlivesDesigns I feel ya. For me already having the 2600+, this is pointless to me now. Atari might have had better luck with sales had they not opted for 7800 comparability. If they had, I’d consider it.

    • @SevenlivesDesigns
      @SevenlivesDesigns 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @SumDumGy yeah definitely. If you got the 2600+ it would seem redundant to get this unless their capability was more accurate. (2600+ for 2600 games and 7800+ being backwards compat). You could sell yours and get this one. Lol But if the aesthetics is not something that bothers ya...then yeah man, totally. You already have what they're selling..just a different shell. 👍

There is absolutely nothing the 5200 can do that the 7800 can't. With that said, it made little sense to release the 2600+. One of the problems with the 5200 is the controller is not fondly remembered in general, even if not considering the durability concerns of the original controllers. If they skip to the Jaguar, the controller is well suitable to play most 5200 games so it seems like a better idea to skip and later down the line release a Jaguar+ with a 5200 adapter and sell reissue 5200 controllers compatible with it separately

    This looked very cool to me at first. But then I wondered what purpose it serves. As far as I can tell, the console itself doesn't do anything different from the 2600+. The only differences are the shell design, and what is included. I checked the page for the wireless CX40, and it says it uses a wireless dongle to connect, which would mean it will work wirelessly on even the original 1977 console.
    I think they should've made a dual-slot console that also supports 5200 cartridges in addition, so it wouldn't be redundant. Also, I'd like to see one that runs the games natively, rather than via software emulation. Maybe "system-on-a-chip" (like the Atari Flashback 2), or even that FPGA method people keep talking about.
    Still, credit where credit is due, and that's the cartridges. Bringing back old games, and new ones, that run on the original hardware. I wish Nintendo was doing this, too. It's a very cool idea.

    Somewhere in a box either inside my parents house or a shed lies my original 2600 and 7800. I've asked my dad to try to find it but the best he could do was the 2 7800 controllers. I've been using them with my 2600+, but I will most likely be picking up the 7200+ if just for the aesthetic. As I've said elsewhere, it wasn't my first console, but the first of the Console wars. I still maintain that the nostaligia with the 2600 is more directly the games and indirectly the 2600, whereas the 7800 it's about the console itself. That defined you as an "Atari Guy" (or gal) over Intellivision/colecovision/etc.

    The Atari 7800 had so much potential to even have done better with the games they created. It was actually a incredible gaming device that suffered a few things that they should of knowing better. But the few games they had were excellent for its time. I will dig in to see what they have done and will probably purchase! I always have thought even the name Atari was a excellent name they came up with! Very cool!

    I know the whole point of these + consoles is to be able to play the actual carts on modern TV's in HD but they all don't work. I really wish they would add a card slot like the Retron 77 has. Collectors and die-hards are still going to buy old and new games to play on the + consoles so I don't think it would hurt these new consoles as far as sales goes.

    I kind of wish they'd sell some sort of wireless dongle for the 2600+ for those that don't see that capability as enough to justify spending $130 on a whole other console. But, I'll probably buy a 7800+ anyway... I don't normally collect "modern" retro-inspired stuff but I'm starting to want to do that with the new Atari lineup, just because of how much care and attention to detail they're putting into these things. I want all those games too. We'll see how many I can afford at the time of release (or how many show up as Christmas presents!)

    The Atari 7800 is getting a second chance, and I'm all for it. We saw a bit of that with Atari with the small selection of games and the historical context of the console as a competitor to the NES. Hopefully, with the 7800+, more people will show interest in the console's library of games.

    What I find interesting is that the 2600+ plays 2600 and 7800 cartridges through emulation. People are nostalgic for the shape and wood grain style of the 2600, but I know there are people who are nostalgic for the 7800 as well. It makes me wonder if this is a similar concept to the 2600+. Of course the appeal to the 7800+ is wireless connectivity which is great! I had to look back on the 2600+ specs to see if that was there since I don’t own one.
    My wife will be pleased since she’s such a fan of the Crystal Castles game that she’ll love this Crystal Quest as well.
    Of course there are other M Network games I would want a release for that I enjoy but playing Astroblast is amazing and 7 Real Sports games in one? Granted I’m not a sports video game player, but I’ll have fun with that one too!

    Can you imagine a 5200+ console with controllers that ACTUALLY work? Big opportunity to fix all the reliability issues that the 5200 conrollers are known for - They'd sell THOUSANDS of those controllers!
    Serious question though - aside from the wireless option, what does this bring to the table that the 2600+ didn't? Did I miss something? I can see this as an option for anyone interested who didn't buy a 2600+, but I can't see anyone double-dipping on this.

    I'm not too interested, but those adapters and wireless controllers makes me hopeful that some day we will have official Atari wireless USB paddles (either natively or with dongles) without needing to make welding and hot glue messes with original Atari paddles, mouses, potentiometers/rotary encoders, arduino micro boards, etc. Those are fun projects, but it's quite amazing we still need to do that to play warlords or breakout (either for Atari or arcade emulation).

Im sure it's for people who want the 80s look (7800), although the wireless controllers could be cool, I just bought 2 7800 controllers that they just released...and they were a hassle to get here as it is, plus with all the games they just released that I also preordered last round. Possibly only interested in frenzy and berzerk this round. You are absolutely 100% correct when you said they are using their newly acquired acquisitions, as those home brews obviously came from the atariage buy.
