I have been a fan of The Incal for more than 20 years now. No surprise, because here in Europe (I am German) it has been quite popular from it's start in the early 1980ies. Thanks for this video, I really liked it a lot.
By the way: There is another classic European Comic series currently being (re)printed in the US (by IDW): 'Corto Maltese' by Hugo Pratt. Its not Science Fiction but more an adventure type of thing with some mystical elements. Corto Maltese (like The Incal) is one of my all times favorite European comics, too. Amazing story & art set in the early twentieth century...
+Guido Billstein Corto Maltese is sooooo good! I have the 3rd book in the mail now :)
Juan Gimenez is argentinian. Alejandro Jodorowsky is chilean indeed. GREAT video man!!
Outstanding overview! Thanks for making this video, I've been looking for a way into the Jodoverse and this was helpful =)
I was your very first subscriber and still love your videos dude. I've missed a few but I'll try to watch them when I get a chance. Thanks for this video. You've got me interested in this series. Adding it to my list for sure.
He should give this comment a heart.
Cannot believe I only very recently discovered your video. Awesome job to say the least. What an essential series in my humble opinion.
People like Moebius, Bilal or Gimenez along with many other Francophones SciFi comics creators are such a part of my life. I grew up with them, they are a essential part of my years of study and my Army time back in the mid/late nineties.
Thank you sir, what a "tackling"!
I've been searching the internet for exactly this information - how it all fits together, what's collected in each edition, etc. Thanks!
Thank you for doing this video. I would not have known there were other books in this verse. Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge of comics.
One of the best overviews that I've seen on the Internet about the Jodoverse and the Incal in particular... if not the absolute best. I like how you get also into the meanings. I wonder, though, why you feel that way about the Metabarons... not on the defensive, but it's my favourite comic book.
+Decatonkeil I need to give it another read, I'm just not wild about the art much. Glad you love it though :)

A lot of people say they don't like the art in The Incal ... I hope people realise that the problem is that the coloring is not done by Moebius himself, its done (horribly) by some other artists ... If you look at The World of Edena where Moebius did the inking AND COLORS, its a world of difference, its reallly very stunningly beautiful .. thing is colors is a big part of Moebius' beauty...
Thanks, great explanation on where to start and the Jodoverse ;)
Yes, "the Return"!!! Glad to have u back, gr8 vid as always. I wants me some Incal, now. Thx
Thank you so much. You've cleared up a lot for me. I'll hunt these down soon.
Just devoured The Incal, The Metabarons and The Metabarons: Second Cycle and it's probably the most epic series of graphic novels I've ever read. Very likely gonna get The Technopriests next, I can't get enough of that universe :)
You need to do more videos. This is good stuff
Excellent breakdown man
There is a used copy of the slip case limited edition on amazon presently for about 1,770.00!!! Very rare collectable now.
Juan Gimenez was actually an Argentinean artist, sadly passed away in the last pandemic
I was on the fence about the Jodoverse but thanks for the video! I'll be sure to pick them up. :)
Great video, very thorough work.
Eyes of The Cat (moebius, jodo). it's the shortest story ever but the art is sublime. I wish they did more short stories together. The way they explore the human condition is always intriguing
Wonderful collection.
Good review, or introduction to the Jodoverse. The only thing I can criticize is that you named Gimenez just as a penciler, when he´s a COMPLETE artist, all of the Metabarons series are watercolor amazing art...!!! (he´s argentinian, btw. Not mexican.)
If you are a Jodorowsky fan, you can´t miss Bouncer, a western comic with François Boucq on the art. Amazing!
I wanna start getting into Moebius stuff I think I'm going to get The Incal as my first.. And i dig Jodorowsky's crazy tripped out 70s movies so I will probably dig this haha.
+0o I Died In A Time Machine o0 Yeah you really have to be able to role with jodorowsky shaman/mythical philosophy stuff. If you like the movies (which I absolutely love too) then you'll be too!
Great video, Will!
Someone needs to do create a web page with pictures/ISBN numbers of all variants and how they map to each other
Juan Gimenez, the artist of The Metabarons, is not mexican. He is argentine. You can search and watch "Sueños Lucidos, vida y obra de Juan Giménez", a documentary about him (in spanish).
+nerdventures Thank you so much, I was looking for an explanation for the Humanoids Website ^^ I have the original 80s versions, But while moving from Germany to Spain and generally moving quite a lot, I infortunately lost the Luminous Incal Comic Book. So thank you again for showing me How to complete my collection again :) Moebius Style and Jodorowskis Imagination has inspired me from a very young age on and the Comic Book that I'm currently working on is heavily inspired by The Incal and the Jodoverse in general. I really enjoy your Videos and appreciate the effort a lot, keep it up ;)
The Ultra Deluxe edition of Final Incal also includes After the Incal with Moebius. I am one of the lucky owners^^
Haven't seen enough videos on Jodo's work. Was planning on doing my own, but I'm glad to see one. And pointer: Jodorowsky's Chilean. Otherwise, fantastic video. :)
Best explanation of The Incal and the Jodoverse on TH-cam I've seen so far...Great Comics for sure, just read The Metabarons and for me is the best series of the Jodoverse, such a great story and looved the storytelling, what do you think, which one was your favorite?
+SilentBrothersReview I have to stick with the classic, for me the Incal itself is where it's at. Everything about that comic comes together so perfectly.
Do you know if Screaming Planet and Snowman Killer are part of the Jodoverse?
Also, I saw no mention of Weapons of the Metabaron. Is that collected in the Metabarons trade? I saw different artists credited for both trades so I'm confused and would like an answer before I start collecting the trades. :)
I just got the Metabarons anniversary edition .....for only 36 Aud delivered on Book depository (was on sale but over now)......It doesn't contain the Travis Charest material.(Weapons )
+flashdamingo Thanks! What about Genisis: Castaka? Was that collected in the Metabarons anniversary edition?
+Nobody's Home hey
No ....It's only the Juan Giminez art /storyline of the original Metabarons story.
+flashdamingo Thanks again!
Looks like I gotta buy all three now.
I am starting to miss your videos dude. Is this channel still alive?
Wondering if they will release an "ultra deluxe" version like with Final Incal. Tempted to save pennies and just buy those versions but the Final Incal came out first for some reason...
i would love a story on the bergs how the father berg won and mated with barbarah or even better the first person to mate with her and how each generation over through the last for example bergs being over thrown by the defoos would be so interested in that oh i mean protoqueen
there is a prequel to the Metabarons called castka: by jordowosky and pastras
So I've read both The Incal and The Metabarons but I cannot reconcile the two stories.. i simply thought that the metabarons was chronologically before the incal but towards the end the last metabaron wages war against all the organisation of the universe (Techno priests, magnate, imperial forces) and we are led to believe he succeeds but at the start of the incal they are all there.. am i missing something or am i trying to make sense of madness?
Yes! Another video!
A lot of people say they don't like the art in The Incal ... I hope people realise that the problem is that the coloring is not done by Moebius himself, its done (horribly) by some other artists ... If you look at The World of Edena where Moebius did the inking AND COLORS, its a world of difference, its reallly very stunningly beautiful .. thing is colors is a big part of Moebius' beauty...
thanks for making this video man
The Metabarons was ok, The Incal, however, just simply amazing! I have a late 80s hard cover copy, signed, bought it in the early 90s for a song.....

Do you know if the "Final Incal" coffee table edition comes with a slip case, or is it by itself?
The signed Ultra version does. I don't believe that the Non-Deluxe one does.
i prefer la casta de los metabarones (the cast of the metabarons?) to the incal, i like more gimenez's drawings and, besides, the saga is muchos more bloody, kind of a mix between the bible, the greeks, and game of thrones
Ever heard about Face de Lune
+BinaryDood I've not, but I'll look it up!
Maybe it only came out in Europe idk
jodoverse is best verse.
Juan Gimenez is argentinian, no mexican. And Jodorowsky are from chile.
Paleo not Homeo -- also your pronunciations were way off :P Otherwise, nice job!
No, he said it right. They use a lot of colourful prepositions in the Jodoverse and yeah, it is a world of homeowhores and paleochrists.
Jodorowsky is from chile
jodorowsky is chilean, not argentinian. i am argentinian btw
+Juan Perez Oops! 😅
