- Liszt's "Un Sospiro - Version 1" features my own "ossia cadenza 2" and is played at a moderate-ish tempo.
"Version 2" is played at slightly faster tempo and has full cadenza 2: • Liszt “Un Sospiro” VER...
"Version 3" has full cadenza 2 and 4 extra bars after cadenza 2 which Liszt added in his own performances in later years: • Liszt “Un Sospiro” VER...

A yes, another beautiful Liszt arrangement written for THREE HANDS
aye
Yep quite literally the as the piece utilizes what’s known as the three hand effect. To make it sound as if three hands are playing the piece.
Octopus are extremely smart. It might be possible.
literally
It was 400k views few months ago and when im back, its 2m+++ views xd
Anyone who can play Liszt has already won the game of life.
I can play the first to pages, does that count :)
I'm learning the 3rd liebestraum
He’s very hard.
I’m playing this piece right now :)
Avner Chaim (insert lenny face here)
Mind = blown. The speed, accuracy, and grace of movements is truly a spectacle to behold, to say nothing of the exquisite music itself.
Rusvul maybe it's just me but the video and sound look a bit sped up. Not doubting the speed or that this is possible but it looks very unnatural.
people, when will you realize it's not possible to speed up a video and have good sound as the same time? I can assure you Paul is a great pianist and not even a part of it is sped up
Soap Mactavish Yeah.. Occam's Razor.. Why would he.. Makes zero sense..
He’s good but some notes were really too loud. Check Valentina lisitsa.
Yeah... it's called virtuosity.
^..^~~
no where is such a good version of this song. NOWHERE. no paid artists on spotify. no youtube videos. This is the best one existing on the planet so far.
Indeed!
I’d say Hamelin’s performance is just as beautiful, but for different reasons (faster arpeggios for a more beautiful melody, but less clarity than Barton’s performance) Both are awesome.
@@stacia6678 way too fast for My taste.
Have y’all heard cziffra’s version? He’s is definitely the best I’ve heard!!! Nothing against Barton tho.
so true, everything about it is perfect
At this point I'm almost convinced Liszt was never satisfied that human only has 10 fingers
There are ppl with 12 fingers
I have a rising feeling Liszt woundn't be satisfyed at any finger count 😛
Just listen to how little pedal he uses. All the notes are legato BY HIS HAND, NOT by the pedal. That's INSANE. I've never heard so much clarity. Once or twice I thought it was almost too clear, but then my ears adjusted again and I was mindblown once more. Jesus, you're so much better than you get credit for.
Holy shit, I didn't notice that until you pointed it out! This guy is next-level good. As a very amateur pianist myself this is the kind of performance that makes me wish I practiced more.
It can also depend on how far you push the pedal down
Not sure about this... on the sheet there is the notation "Sempre Pedale", wich means "pedal always"... so he uses the pedal almost the whole song, I think.
I agree his touch is on par with the composer I would say
Hmm that might be taking it a little far xD. Liszt really was something else. Even someone like Horowitz or Zimmerman would bow down for him if he would be alive. You can definitely see that Paul has spent years practicing the Piano though. It really reflects
When I first saw the sheet music to this piece in a music history class, I had absolutely no idea how anyone constrained by the limits of human beings was expected to play it.
Watching this video, I have even less of an idea.
I had no idea how Litzs composed it, absolute geinous
Practice
What if Liszt had two lives and his second life was...
...Ling Ling
Kailash
It all makes sense now, the L in Ling Ling stands for Liszt
I am no pianist, just someone that's toyed with it my whole life. I took this on figuring either I could do it, or I couldn't, only 1 way to find out. Well, as you might guess, I was right and I was wrong! In some ways I marvel at the simplicity of Liszt's composing, taking simple phrases and making them sound really hard when they actually fell right together nicely. Yeah, then there's the other parts! Most of the piece really wasn't bad, just the 2 damn arpeggio's gave me fits.
"I Think I can play this..."...[skips to 2:20]..."never mind......"
It is impossibly hard in the beginning and those jumps... oh my frickin gosh are you insane? This is Liszt!
@@charlesmcbain8975 Well i am practising this piece and it gets easier over time when you practise it :p
@@charlesmcbain8975 actually, it's a patern of notes so it makes it easier, and the left hand has some jumps and leaps but compared to other Liszt pieces Un Sospiro is not that hard
Yes the section beginning around 2:20 is the most difficult part of the piece. Once you’ve mastered that you’re fine.
@Barrack Obama Vlogs Yep, considering that the bottom voice has to be quieter than the top, you need a lot of control with your fingers to be able to jump and keep the volume down. The Cadenzas in this piece are pretty tricky as well.
Imagine playing this so beautifully without mistakes in one go. Cannot imagine the dedication behind being a true artist. You have my respect sir!
Love his straight forward, simple and beautiful interpretations. No stale melodramatics or tricks, just beautiful playing.
it's called Sospiro (sigh) but I can't breathe listening to it. Too beautiful.

Barton plays with the same ease as Horowitz. Elegant and dreamy without histrionics or sentimentality. Sheer perfection.
Liszt is not my favorite... but this, it's just insanely beautiful.
CxC2007 whats your favorite?:)
Chopin.
I prefer Rachmaninoff
Do you care to explain yourself?
I like Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Greig and plenty of others, but Chopin will always be the best in my book too!
You know shit is getting real when you need three staves in you solo piano sheet music
Whats a stave?
@@RacoonEvil A staff, that’s the 5 lines with the clef on the left, where you write musical notes. usually there is only two for piano music.
Liszt used a third staff to write the melody at the top, while the accompaniment takes two staves at the bottom.
Actually that 3 staves part at the beginning looks impressive with the hands crossing, but it’s definitely not the hardest part.
Have a look at this one, still for solo piano music. how one can play this is beyond what I can comprehend.

@@anisometropie oh wow haha.

This is the music of a true genius. Coming from the heart, soul and spirit of the great great GEAT Liszt. Splendid performance. Thanks for sharing.
As amazing as this is, spare a thought for the utter genius that composed it. As insanely difficult this is to play (incredible by the way Paul) think of the genius that COMPOSED this. How Liszt got such beauty from such complexity is beyond me
Brian Dennehy 7
It's not that complex, it's a simple chord progression with a melody line. Beautiful, yes, but really quite simple when you strip away the arrangement.
Brian Dennehy Liszt was a madman. Which tends to be an important factor when composing
Well it's not complicated as in complex, there are barely any strange intervals, lots of it is just octaves, it's just a harmony with a melody line, but it sure is difficult to play. Liszt often composed pieces which were just incredibly hard to play, but this is really not that virtuosic
Comparing Liszt’s romantic harmonies and modulations to those of Mozart is a little absurd. From just a harmonic point of view, Mozart would have never written anything like this. That’s not to say Mozart’s harmonic craftsmanship is any less genius than Liszt’s, but Liszt’s is incomparable due to differing styles and harmonic techniques.
Paul Barton a 360 degree artist,
great intensity great perfection great sensibility, a special person!
it sounds so innocent and gorgeous, I can imagine a perfect childhood filled with sunny days adventures, discovering the world and admiring it for what it is
Music takes me to other places, also. Places that are not found on any map....
This is by far and away the best version I have ever heard of this piece. Been coming back to this video for years. Thank you for this.
Absolutely agree... its much better played at a slower pace. Amazing piece of music.
This is phenomenal!! I first heard this composition in the 1960 movie "Song without End," starring Capucine and Dirk Bogarde, when I was 20 years old. 60 years later I find it on TH-cam, and it is more beautiful than ever. Barton's touch is magnificent, almost mystical. I bought the soundtrack on audio tape (no idea where it is now). It was an emotionally moving film when Liszt leaves his bevy of lovers to use his music in service to God and his Church. "Un Sospiro" was the closing music to the film.
This is still not on my TO-DO Liszt.
Lol
I think one of the most beautiful pieces ever written for piano..........Pure magic! Thank you Liszt...
At the music studio I teach piano at, we have a whole bunch of adjoining studio rooms, and when we have breaks in our teaching schedule a lot of us will use the time to practice pieces we're working on... the teacher who shares a studio wall with me is really beautiful and I've always had a huge crush on her... one day she decided to start practicing this piece and I had the chance to listen to her play it so beautifully week after week... after a couple of months I finally realized that listening to her play this amazing piece had made me fall in love with her...
In the end how did It go?
Friendzoned
Lesson: Learn the piano to get laid.
I would love to be friendzoned by someone like her. Heck, that's more than too good for me already.
How cute!
Picking my jaw up off the floor. Thank you for sharing this incredible music with your amazing talent, skill and hard work.
Hi pretty lady. How are you doing today?
The way you play the melody is just insane, you can hear it so clear in every single second of the piece like if a third hand were playing it, lovely interpretation!!
Hey Paul, you should do a FAQ, that would be interesting. Did you practise a lot when you were younger and were you a 'prodigy' or did your love for the piano blossom later in life because you somehow went under the radar for a concert pianist haha
so clean, so accurate, so perfect
*Beginning of EVERY Liszt piece*
Me: I think this is doable for me
*End of beginning*
Me: Dang he got me again nvm..
377 people really just do not have a clue how good this guy is.. on some of his arpeggios and lines he's not even using the sustain pedal.. ridiculous musicality and technique! this piece simply blows me away.. brilliant playing!
Liszt's music is in the world. And that is a reason to be alive in this world.
What a time to be alive...

Live Alive With A. B. Martin top of top of the best!
It made me cry. Very Beautiful. Thank you Paul.
This is my favorite rendition I’ve ever heard of this piece. You actually take your time with it and give as much intonation to each note played as you can. Most versions sound more like a rolling cascade of notes to me rather than an beautiful, rolling harmony with a clear melody on top.
this piece is technically really difficult. the interpretation to give this piece a good character is even more difficult. But you nailed it, paul.
1. Be born as a genius with musical talent and huge hands. 2. Be born to a pianist who plays for a Prince. 3. Sight read Chopin like it’s nothing, get noticed by aristocrats. 4. Practice scales and arpeggios 10-12 hours per day until you get so sick of having mastered every awkward fingering pattern that you decide to challange yourself by making even harder ones. 5. Laugh at everyone that tries to play your “practice problems.”
You are the first person I look for as a reference to any piece I am trying to learn. You truly have a gift.

That is all.
Li'lBlu RidingHood of course most normal pianists can’t sight read that properly, we’d probably guess the key the modulation is in before attempting it
Vikram Keskar yes, but not all of those notes are moving chromatically. Flight of the Bumblebee is easier to read in comparison to this flight of notes due to only having a single chromatic line
My dear friend,
THATS THE SIMPLEST PART OF THE PIECE.
It's just mimicking whatever interval is in either hand. If you play it and are proficient in scales/chromatics, it's honestly fine. If you've played enough liszt, a lot of patterns in his pieces become muscle memory.
It was probably a lot harder to write than to play...
Oh my....Paul!!! This is an exquisite and beautiful rendition of this beloved work of Liszt!!! Just watching your hands alone is poetry in motion!! This is such an incredibly difficult piece of music that you handle with great ease! Your execution of the arpeggios is just as smooth as butter and your crossover work is absolutely outstanding!! The work on the descending and ascending scale passages are so fluid and simply fantastic!! I say BRAVO to you Paul for one of your finest performances (in my humble opinion)!!! ~Jackie
Music bright like a diamond. Please more Liszt Maestro!
Liszt be thinking, "If I'm gonna buy a whole piano, I'm gonna use the whole piano!"
Lol, I like that, that's good! That fits Liszt!
Best comment...and there are fantastic ones!!!
Rachmaninoff did the same, but he didn't bother to split the chords into runs 😏

I believe NoName meant that it won’t be his favorite piece to play because of its difficulty, but Paul made it seem so easy in this video.
Looking at that notation and even contemplating how I'd remotely begin to count it out and place my hands into motion, quite literally makes my head hurt. Beautiful performance.

I always imagined that some day I could play this. As a mechanic I had to learn that I will never be able to move this way.
