Yeah; machines putting people out of work, violence in media, corporate politics and ethics, Cybernetics, what is the measure of a cyborg or robot's life to that of a human, PTSD, the rise of crime in low income neighborhoods, places below the poverty line, as a result of fewer jobs that _don't_ require a high school or college degree and price inflations, forcing many to 'Go Big or Go Broke' by choosing a job in crime, and how the media downplays a tragedy or serious incident by immediately cutting to something else (COMMERCIAL, CUT TO COMMERCIAL!!!) and censoring the flow of information, so nobody panics or thinks for themselves.
Detroit, Michigan is perhaps the closest we're getting to a real-life Gotham City.

It's so funny watching these reactions. I was born in 1983, this came out in 1987 and I saw this on TV in 89. I was too young to watch it but my mom let me. I loved Murphy immediately, RoboCop was my hero. He still is. Nowadays everything is so watered down, there's violence but there is no blood. That's why I respect movies like John Wick. But RoboCop is more than its ultra violence, it's about corporate greed and about the soul trapped in the machine.

@@CapedInformer Paul Verhoeven is actually a really good social commentator but unfortunately for many people the poignant messages get lost in the blood and guts, also I think he isn't quite as sensitive to violence as many would be as he grew up on Nazi occupied Holland where he more than likely witnessed a great deal of violence and likely became desensitized to it.

I saw this when I was 17 in 1987 and it was the 1st R rated film I ever saw in the theatre (and I lied about my age as you had to be 18 in Canada)... It blew me away at 17. I've rewatched it dozens of times and it is still one of the best sci-fi films of the era. Themes of consumerism run amok, business monopolies and corruption which goes from the top down (the "real" villains are all the executives at Omni Consumer Products), themes of Death and Resurrection- notice the symbolism of how Robocop "walks on water" at the climax against Clarence. An outstanding soundtrack. And an absolutely solid performance by Peter Weller.
This movie could have gone in a bunch of stupid directions like having Robo throw a car at the bad guys, or having him have to save his widowed wife and son from the Boddicker Gang, or have a romantic relationship between him and Lewis- so glad it didn't go that route.
Bit of trivia- the version you watched originally got an "X" rating from the Motion Picture Association of America in 1987 because of the sheer amount of over the top violence. Scenes like ED209 shooting the boardroom victim Kinney a thousand times, Murphy being shot to death, and Clarence's death at the end all had to be trimmed down (but not completely deleted) to reduce it to an R rating for theatres. The MPAA also wanted them to cut the Melting Man scene- but director Paul Verhoeven put his foot down and managed to keep it in, in its entirety (something that I'll never forget watching on a 35 foot movie screen as a 17 year old kid).
About the sequels- Robocop 2 is... Okay. It doesn't have the heart of the original. Different director. The satire seems forced at times. I don't hate it though. However Robocop 3 is a *complete waste of 2 hours you'll never get back.* Doesn't even have Peter Weller as Robo in it. It's... terrible.

The neural network and physiology of the human brain is far more powerful computationally and learning than the most powerful computer so far. It's not artificial intelligence, it's real intelligence. Plus no computer programming is necessary to run the mechanical body since that can all be hardwired to the nerve network. Cyborgs would for sure be more capable than robots unless you had supercomputer AI like in the Terminator, even so there's a strong argument for a brain controlled machine. Especially since the brain itself can be enhanced with chips and memory boosters.

You see throughout the movie that they still use old school computers and crt TVs instead of flat-screens and smartphones. News clips showing more sophisticated space tech and the south american wars in the background. So a combination of 80s and 90s lifestyle with a little touch of advanced technology set in alternate reality that is 10 years later when the movie was first released makes more sense to me.

Good review brother. In this movie, they wanted to make a cyborg police officer, that had emotions, feelings, but they wanted to control him, but..Robocop, made his own decisions, like a human being would, plus he solved his own murder

in robocop1 (dont know about the other movies) they went out of their way and actually created miniture scene, like when ED209 fell down the stairs, that was a miniture-capture, if that makes sense,
it's just awesome how much they put into this movie before the time of CGI, and we all know how robo2014 went, skip that one.

The Director's Cut is the way to go. In the theater the violence was 'toned down' by the MPAA but it ended up having the effect of making the film MORE gross. By limiting the violence they lost the effect of camp and comedy. The exaggerated world (I'd buy that for a dollar!) was meant to be reflected in the over-the-top massacres until they became funny. "Somebody want to call a paramedic?" lands big laughs in the Director's version while in the R-rated cut it leaves you wondering if they really should. Also, this movie is one of the main reasons there is now an NC-17 rating.

To paraphrase Stefan from SNL, "this movie has EVERYTHING"... great action, solid social commentary, better acting than it deserves, better sad hero story than it deserves, a villain who's having so much fun it's infectious, etc. :D
I think you saying "I'm not sure who's worse" is the director succeeding in one of his messages with this movie. He used this script as a social satire to comment on media, violence, corporate greed, etc., by making a movie so violent it's almost ridiculous. Turns out, that he did SUCH a good job though, that the movie works just as a standalone action movie. He did the same thing with Starship Troopers... which was a commentary on the military, blind patriotism, etc, but also a fun sci-fi movie.
As far as Robocop's "moves", you can find a TH-cam clip from a con of Peter Weller talking about how the suit was difficult to move in at first, and how he had the producers bring in an old movement instructor of his that he worked with for days trying to figure out the best way for Robocop to move. Also, I think Weller's last movie was the second one of the new Star Treks. He also did the voice of old Batman in The Dark Knight Returns feature length animated movie.
A LOT more thought than you'd expect was put into this movie :) SO GOOD!
(PS: If you look around TH-cam, you may find a fan film where someone recreated the d**k shooting scene, but then added a LOT more dudes for Robocop to shoot :D )

22:25: Also, Emil's appearance after taking his 'Toxic Waste Bath' was directly inspired by the make-up work done in the cult Sci-Fi/ Horror Movie "The Incredible Melting Man," which was about an astronaut who was exposed to intense cosmic radiation that was slowly melting him alive; it had 4-separate stages where it went from "looking-almost human" to "barely alive sludge pile," as during the progress of the movie, he loses more and more flesh which just sloughed off... including his nose, his ears, hair, eyelids, lips, first couple layers of skin, exposing the veins and nerves and the skeleton, until the only thing remaining of him was just one of his eyes... and at that point, the guy was just begging them to finish him off!
His blood went from being thick crimson red (like a normal person's) to being a thin, watery brownish-black glop (similar to what Emil goes through, if you look at Clarence's windshield after he splatters him).
And the fact that his SWEAT IS _STEAMING_ is a very clear sign that it burns and he's in crippling agony! It's chewing through him like hydro-sulfuric acid, making his bones all soft and spongy! That's probably why he came apart so easily when Clarence ran him over! Though all things considered that may have been a mercy, putting Emil out of his misery!

It's easy to knock the effects... but remember that this movie was made for a measly $11 million, which is $25 million in today's dollars, and CG wasn't yet an option. Plus I think the campiness of the effects adds to the charm of the film.

The movies directors had so much more confidence in the 80s-90s. Take Beetlejuice, Predator, Terminator, Robocop: all original ideas. They went all in, they didn't have a formula or template to copy, no focus groups, no charts or restrictions. It was a great time for creativity and that's why I wish every greedy studios owners to get tarantulas in their lungs.

Here's an interesting fact about the theme song if you listen to the whole thing. Music theory uses horns to signify heroic leitmotif (hero's theme), It starts off with warm tone instruments strings with horns, then goes to metal clinging and horns and the strings disappear, then ends with strings, metal clanging and horns. Mirroring the journey of Robocop.

You asked about why they didn't just make a robot instead of combining the human and machine. It's a good question and a documentary I saw about robots about ten or fifteen years ago may have answered it. For the longest time the designers of robots had a really difficult time getting them to do two things that humans have no problem doing: walking down stairs and walking through crowds of people. As far as why steps were a problem, I really can't remember. As far as crowds of people, I guess it was a really tough to get the robots to sense when to turn one's body to avoid an oncoming being. From the stuff my brother has sent me about robots (he's a tech nerd) the last few years, engineers have supposedly solved these problems. As you can see from the movie, ED 209 couldn't walk stairs, making him useless in those situations.
I though the character of Clarence Boddicker, played by Kurtwood Smith (the father from "That 70s Show") was also excellent in this movie. One of my favorite villains.
