Epic Mullet Migration in Florida

  • During the first week of the Florida mullet migration, we filmed this incredible footage of predators (tarpon, jacks, sharks, snook, etc..) feeding on massive schools of mullet. This occurs every year on the east coast of Florida. Watch tarpon explode out of the water, bull sharks chasing tarpon and mullet, jacks in a total feeding frenzy and massive bait balls blowing up!

Shows tremendous sacrifice to make that. Think about it, Josh BlacktipH is as hard core as anybody fishing today. Somebody had to shoot this video, and that means NOT FISH. Tons of fisherman in Florida have fished the mullet run, but not many have ever captured it with a camera. Because everyone wants a damn rod in their hand when this is happeneing. Thats class.

+BlacktipH Mullet run was pretty ridiculous this year. Found a giant school of big mullet in 300 feet off of Boynton with maybe 7-15 sails corraling it. My favorite fishing moment to date.

I remember being fairly close to something like this happening. I was living in Gulf Breeze Florida at the time, and was on the dock in front of my fathers house. I was rebaiting a hook and looked over and not ten feet away there was a school of about three dolphin chasing a MASSIVE school of mullet right towards the dock I was standing on. I got splashed with water I was so close. It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience, since dolphins RARELY go near the dock I was on.

Lived in the Florida Keys all my life and have never seen mullet of this magnitude in one area. That footage of the tarpon jumping was so awesome. The tarpon here are still prowling for food and the schools of mullet are still pretty small compared to this insanity.

This reminds me of mullet fishing 30 years ago. There was a small tidal pool within an oyster bed. There was one entrance and for some reason the mullet liked to congregate there. At low tide that entrance was about six feet wide and about a foot deep but the center of the tidal pool was about 4 feet deep and all told about a quarter acre so it was substantial size and held a lot of mullet. So my buddy and I pulled up our small boat and strung a small net across the opening. We could have sunk our boat with all the mullet we could have caught if we were greedy. Instead we just caught about a hundred pounds, took some home for dinner and sold the rest to a small seafood place for twenty five cents a pound or there abouts. The owner was so excited that we did that every weekend for a couple of years. The mullet was always there. I don't think we could have over fished that spot if we tried. It looked a lot like the video here and that was all the time regardless of time of year. The only reason we stopped is I moved back north. That last trip there were more mullet than ever. It was a nice way to earn spare change and get dinner. Florida is absolutely the best place to go fishing ever.

Louisiana waters were the same during the exact time. I remember fishing one day and that happened the entire time we were out there. I believe they were running from Bull Sharks, however we maxed out on Redfish and Trout lingering in the schools of mullet as well.

As a small child walking on a deserted beach in NC a school of fingerling mullet exploded at waters edge causing 8 to 10 baitfish to end up flopping around on land. I threw some back but kept 3 or 4 to show my family back at the hotel so they would believe me. It was like a miracle straight from passages out of the Bible.

There used to be migrations of anchovies or sardines at So. California beachs occasionally over the decades. When this happens, just like in this video, all the predators come in close to feast. You could use any silver lure that looked like an anchovy and get hit every cast by a myriad of species. I once caught a 38 inch Barracuda off the rocks during one of these migrations. I was just picking up the bait fish that were flopping on the shore and put one on a hook and cast out and wham-o. Only Barracuda I've ever caught and it was from shore.

    • @patchdavis35

Yes it happens on the west coast as well. We are in Sarasota, a creek,
and have driven our boat home (slowly) while they are heading out.
You cannot believe there are not chopped-up mullet in your wake!
Usually winter, sometimes fall, but last year they fooled all the fishermen. Gill net ban that fishermen fought twenty years ago has
helped increase their numbers. The pregnant females are still taken
for their roe is sold for big bucks in Orient.
