This scene is just so incredibly important to me. No matter how you interpret it the love and appreciation that Killua has for Gon (as well as the obvious fear that Gon's ignorance will be his downfall) is so beautifully portrayed. The bittersweet tone in Killua's voice, the music swelling, the abrupt tone change that follows in the scene soon after this one, the dramatic irony of it all. Togashi is a masterful writer. Madhouse did this scene justice through and through and that's the highest praise I can give.
This scene says a lot about the friendship of Gon and Killua. The whole episode was showing all the veteran hunters putting down Killua for abandoning Kite and saying he was worse than a loser. Killua was beating himself up for running away. Gon was unconscious out the whole time but when he woke up he did nothing but put Killua's fears at ease; That Kite isn't dead, and he did the right thing. Gon was the only one who supported Killua.
I agree. It’s so obvious also that Killua has feelings for Gon, and it kinda hurts sometimes to see that it’s implied Gon might not feel the same way back. I personally think Gon sees Killua as his best friend, while Killua sees him as something more.

"Sometimes you shine so brightly, I must look away." No matter how many times I watch this video (and this is probably more often than I should), this sentence always gets under my skin and hits me right in the heart. Killua is again reminded of how innocent Gon is and this shouldn't be the moment for him to spoil it. He is perfectly aware that he could just be an asshole and tell Gon right away what actually must have happened to Kite. He knows but he doesn't say anything and he doesn't want to be the reason why Gon might end up broken. Killua doesn't even consider himself worthy enough to be with Gon and that makes everything much more painful since we all know how much effort he puts into their friendship and remaining with his friend. It's because he doesn't know what else to do and as much as it will hurt him, he doesn't want to let go of his friend. The turning point which made him realize how much he loves Gon but this is just my personal opinion. Well, everything is but whatever. God, this is beyond bittersweet.

gon is in a severe state of denial. killua's moment of silence was his becoming aware of it. calling him light equates do a qualification of the phrase "ignorance is bliss". this psychological crisis of gon's is very reminiscent of many of the Tokyo ghoul characters; this, however, is not surprising since ishida sui's sensei was togashi. :)
It all depends on whether Killua believes that Gon's optimism is due to his misunderstanding of the situation versus a simple determination to always hope for the best and press forward. I think you could argue both perspectives, but regardless of how Killua sees it, the reality is that Gon was indeed in a state of denial. This is brilliantly demonstrated with his eventual break-down and complete loss of control in the face of Kite's apparent death.

admittedly my jaw dropped there. I didn't think Kite would have won, but I didn't expect to see Pitou holding his freaking head. And then she stitched his body back together to be a puppet... that was one sick cat girl.
You can just see and feel the appreciation and loving friendship that Killua has for Gon, hes always trying his best to protect Gon even when Gon dont see or realize it this was just a masterpiece of a scene, hxh is one of my favorite anime ever and Killua is my favorite cuz no matter how hard he trys to hid his feelings and his love for Gon u can always see right through it
I appreciate how Killua learned an important lesson in the end. And as for Gon he became so much more interesting to me. I wonder how he'll grow for the better and see if he ever has a shift or growth in his worldview.
This scene is so precious to me, when i first watched HxH i was genuinely feeling down because of the tone this entire episode went for, and Gon *actually* lift me up, so i could relate to what Killua said of him being "light"... And then theres the scene that follows this one and got depressed again and stopped watching HxH for like 2 days😂😂, but yeah, incredible scene this one, one of my favorites for sure.
This is the moment that HxH most strongly subverts regular shonen tropes. Gon is the main character of a shonen, so when he says "NO. MY FRIEND IS DEFINITELY ALIVE!" We should all think "ok yeah that means he's probably alive but there will be a hard-fought battle to save him." Well...there WAS a hard-fought battle. But it turned out, it was never possible to save him because he'd been dead from almost the start. THIS. This difference between what Gon THOUGHT COULD BE DONE-vs-WHAT WAS ACTUALLY TRUE That is what makes Gon transform so dramatically. He is able to give up EVERYTHING, because from his point of view, EVERYTHING has been snatched away from him already.

One of the most powerful scenes in all anime history. The music, voice acting, cinematography, subtlety of it all. This scene trancends it's own already great anime to a true masterpiece. Funnily enough this scene didn't have the same effect on me on the first watchthrough of HxH, only when I was able to fully grasp the story and it's intricacies was I able to acknowledge the beauty of it.
Notice the foreshadowing at 1:40, even though Killua thinks that "Gon is light" in truth it's him who's bathed in light while Gon is sitting in the shadow giving a small glimpse of what's to come

C Vox children being in a gay relationship isn't twisted or inherently sexual, people are free to interpret Gon and Killua's feelings about eachother as romantic for a myriad of reasons and subtext within the show, it is not "forced". Being gay and gay crushes existing is not some "twisted fantasy" it's real life lol
Gon is so naive/optimistic and that's his biggest flaw/strength because he's literally just a child in a war scenario (not your average "let's save the day" shounen vibe) at the same time that smile in his face is what gives strength to his friends to keep going forward during hard times (Palm, Shoot and mainly Killua). That's why watching the harsh reality breaking his hopes of seeing Kite once again is so heartbreaking, because we don't wanna lose our light, our sunshine, the smile on Gon's face.
This scene is so deep and meaningful for Killua, because he gets to see an ocean of hope in Gon's eyes. Looking deep into his character, Killua was raised to be a killer and was trained and a weapon. He was literally tortured untill he became physically immune to poison and electricity. In the Hunter Exam Killua is expose to the real world and somebody of his age for the first time. Killua loves Gon more than he loves himself because he never had someone who actually care about his emotions in his entire life. He doesn't believe his worth of being loved or having friends because the didn't raised him that way. Killua thinks of himself as a coward for running away from Pitou and leaving Kite to die, even though that decision saved their lives from most certain death he still hates not being able to save Gon or kite in a that situation. I love Hunterxhunter and how many layers its characters have, it's honestly my favorite show of all time.
Killua literally knows that Kite died even after Gon's words, but he keeps up with him , the "You are light" means killua knows that gon never saw the darkness , it was his first time to go through grief to understand and accept Kite's death , Killua lived and came out of the darkness complete opposite of Gon so it was easy for him to understand that he's dead
This scene is the buildup for when gon loses control. Here killua compares him to light itself because gon is a beacon of positivity and innocence. Then when pitou finally tells gon kite is dead all of the light fades away and gon becomes darkness itself. When I think of the word fury gon in that moment is what I see in my head. Also this scene hits really hard the first time you watch because you’re not positive kite died and then moments later there’s the scene of pitou underneath the tree with kite’s head on her lap.
Honestly, I think this is the scene where Killua realises he's in love with Gon. Like I suspect he was aware he had more than friendship feelings cos Killua is so perceptive, but something about this interaction suggests a breakthrough in exactly how deep those feelings run. Even if they are purely platonic, which I don't think so. The love Killua has for Gon is so beautiful.
@Tobalase Abegunde Bruh I couldn't speak English well and don't really want to say much, and you're not all that wrong about the friendship and light-darkness interpretation....but ignoring the romantic coding here is true lacking doing research itself, saying people are assuming things when they suspect Killua's feelings not all that platonic (well doesn't mean that it's sexual either) is even more ridiculous once you realize just how much effort the Mangaka had put here describing their bond and interactions.... According to the manga, the Mangaka has planted TONS OF hints and subtexts implying that yes, Killua (no matter he's gay, bi or whatever) IS in love with Gon, both platonically and romantically, and this very likely already happend in Greed Island arc, as Hisoka himself has noticed Killua's feelings (very likely during their dodge ball match), just Killua himself wasn't aware of it at that time. That's why he was so unfriendly to Bisky who looks like a little girl from the start (as we know Killua doesn't naturally hate or look down on girls from how he wanted to be friends with Canary), because that was not long after how Gon "confessed" his feelings about how grateful he feels to have Killua as his friend, and Killua was indulged in that happiness that he subconsciously didn't want others to join them interfering his time with Gon (as we could seein Heaven's Arena, Killua didn't mind Zushi joining the gang and hanging out as a trio, hence he felt different now), and it's crystal clear all he cared about during his second Hunter exam try was returning to Gon as fast as he could (the badge number 1219 itself implied this as well, as it could read as AI-NI-I-KU : "I want to go and see you" in Japanese goroawase, so this was definitely the Mangaka implying here that Killua wanted to return to the game real quick not because he enjoyed the game, but he missed Gon and didn't want to leave his side). And now we know that probably most of the scenes Killua felt blessed with Gon's words in GI were romantic-coded (Hisoka is canonically "engaged" with a man and he interpreted Killua's reaction to Gon saying "It must be Killua (for me to hold the ball)" as "Killua's most beloved person is Gon", hence you know what the author wants to imply here), it's really obvious that this YOU ARE LIGHT scene is most likely Killua realising himself that his feelings for Gon itself is so strong that it might already went beyond friendship. Even if Killua was quite confused and still referred Gon as his "best friend" during his mind battle with Illumi's needle, it was clear that Killua was quite upset and jealous about all Gon's "dates", including Palm-the-cleans-up-nice-version (go read this part in Japanese manga, depending on the language the Mangaka used here it's definitely jealousy which Killua had shown here during the "date" ask and the stalking scene), and Killua himself might figure it out at some point as he joked about "lover's suicide" with Gon during the palace invasion- and hell he was serious, because Meleoron here already noticed that "You couldn't be joking because you looked incredibly sad when Gon said non of your business" and "this is something Killua wouldn't say and could never speak about", thus this means Meleoron himself realized that Killua holds deep feelings for Gon, that would drive himself want to die with him together (and like "lover's suicide"), would make him hurt as hell once Gon shows some extent of rejection, and this is some kind of feeling Killua couldn't possibly speak out loud nor convey to Gon, nor would he ever discuss this with anyone. It's really clear that this is referring to something beyond friendship here, as even you assume Killua's friendship might grow unhealthily obsessive or what, it really wasn't something that he "couldn't say and wouldn't talk about", and letting Gon knowing how deep this "Friendship" is couldn't possibly let him lose their friendship. Nevertheless, Killua was so angsty about "I may not able control my emotions and wouy cross a turning point that could never possibly turn back, once I ask some questions about how Gon views about me in this mission (as a friend or not?) " and the Narrator said here "Everyone could ascend to the next step if experiences were accumulated, but the fear of losing something precious (friendship with Gon) was so great that Killua couldn't gather his courage to even do it a try"..... It's about relationship upgrade ("next step"). It's about deep feelings. And it's likely a taboo ("You couldn't say and wouldn't talk about it"). If Gon noticed this, there's a possibility he'll stop being friends with Killua. So WHAT is exactly this feeling's about? Heck this was so obvious that my head hurts, and friendly reminders there are SEVERAL characters inside the show noticed the nature of Killua's feelings as well, to name but a few: Hisoka, Palm, Meleoron, Ikalugo and Illumi. Biscuit might got a chance and Shoot noticed some sign as well. It was so obvious since late Chimera Ant Arc that I wouldn't be surprised if the Mangaka told us that even Alluka, Kite and Ging already knew about this as well. (Hisoka already discussed Killua's feelings for Gon with his gay boyfriend Illumi; Plam basically treated Killua like a love rival ever since he declared that Plam was the one interfering with him and Gon and demanding her to disappear and leave them alone, and later on Plam knows what Killua wanted to hear while crying how he couldn't help a breaking Gon, was that Gon needs him more than anyone else; Meleoron and Ikalugo both know that Killua intended to do "lover's suicide" with Gon, and the fact that Gon didn't come along with this wish; Shoot noticed Killua's "fading away" and Bisky knows the most effective way to provoke Killua is endangering his relationship with Gon....and Alluka (in Japanese )was using a specific formal way talking to Gon, implying he's someone she thinks she should respect, and she actually thinks she should "share" and even "return back" Killua to Gon when she's his blood-related little sister neglected for years and Gon is like....well, a friend of her brother's who she just met first time? Friendly reminder again that Alluka is a trans girl, a queer character, and Killua is likely the only family member who respects and vocally supports her queerness,and she actually read moods and understands how her family are not very happy with her existence and how Killua treated Nanika bad for once..... It could be understandable if she found some queerness on Killua, she will support her brother as well) You know there is something going on when the Mangaka himself is a man so enthusiastic about writing Gay and cross-dressing characters that he once got an idea about publishing a gay sport manga, then having so many characters acting so.... AMBIGUOUSLY GAY in his latest manga, like having Illumi saying something like "my engagement ring and premarital contract with Hisoka", giving a name "KuLeoLove" to some radio station audience in Yorknew Arc, making Killua giving a card which named "rainbow 🌈 diamond" and it's effect "propose with this card and whoever you proposed to will definitely say yes" to Gon once he won it (when he could have easily won any other cards like some medicine or magical items, and the Mangaka chose this)..... I could go on and on, about how this Mangaka Togashi Yoshihiro himself LOVES messing with the idea of gay and gender-fluid characters, and is probably a butthurt shipper of his own gay characters. And friendly reminders again, among all the gay and queer characters Togashi has created so far, I have never seen a pair that has such amount of romantic subtexts and intended ambiguous queerness as Killua and Gon. The only pair that could compete with them in romantic subtexts in HxH is Meruem and Komugi (and if you're trying to find similar cases in his former works well there are Yusuke and Keiko, Hiei and Mukuro.... Heterosexual couples but all plented with subtle romantic themes). So to me it's a natural thing to assume that Togashi wrote Killua as a character who develops a romantic teenage crush on his best friend and is uneasy and confused about it, and Gon probably just thinks the way all dudebro does like we are bros and we are best friends and has little idea about what exactly is Killua going through... And I'm quite sure that Togashi himself very likely ships Killugon so very hard, that he spent several chapters to illustrate how this relationship develops and dedicated a whole arc on how Killua got aware and suffered from it. Although it seems Gon still doesn't think Killua more than anything but a really dear friend, I wouldn't be surprised if Togashi already shipped them to the extent that he doesn't care about it and is prepared to make him reciprocate Killua's feelings before the final ending. The only thing preventing Togashi from making all his gay couples balantly obvious and canon instead of throwing ambiguous queerness is the generally homophobic Japanese culture and the generally homophobic audience of weekly Shounen Jump. In consideration of their weak mind which couldn't hold too much gayness he learnt his techniques of using metaphors and creating ambigious lines. Though these still haven't stopped him from making Alluka a canon trans girl.
I'm about to go off on a "bit" of a tangent here, but I promise you, I totally see where you're coming from! I think this reading of the scene is completely valid, so don't think that this is my disagreeing so much as me giving my two cents in the matter. In my eyes, Killua is queer-coded, and Gon is as well (though, to a lesser extent) and I think that is the reason why so many people ship them. They have an *extremely* moving friendship and dynamic to start off with, and it's blatantly obvious how they were truly meant for one-another; for sure platonically, and maybe romantically as well! (I should say now, before I continue, that shipping them in a sexualized manor is disgusting, and if someone does ship them in that way, they need to take a *long* break from the internet, to say the least.) This scene, the first time I watched it, was a pretty solid confirmation of the nature of Killua's feelings towards Gon. There is no denying that, right now, Gon is the most important thing in the world to Killua, but he assumes that Gon feels differently. He thinks that, because Gon is more focused on being a hunter and Kite and Ging, he is less important than those things. He doesn't even mind thinking that he is less important than those things as long as he can stay by Gon's side. In a way, he even assumes that he may be unwanted entirely, so much so that he needs to ask for permission to continue on with Gon, "But even so, is it still okay if I stay by your side?" I think that it's clear that Killua is stating that Gon is beautiful-blindingly so-to him, and wether you think of that statement as platonic or romantic is up to the viewer. Taking this scene by itself, with it's meaning at face value (or taking it as something written to be perceived as queer) it's easy to be read as a statement of strong romantic feelings. I thought that for quite a long time, frankly, but, as I've rewatched the show and gone back to think about it, I've realized that not quite that. It Killua's anxieties and fears being voiced through the lenses of his devotion towards Gon. His asking for permission to stay with Gon: his tone, his unsure expression, the context, and everything that follows the scene just backs this up more. It's important to remember that, in this arc, Killua's largest internal conflict is if he should stay with Gon or not; if he's any use to him at all. Killua is finally able to see that he has value within himself, but now he thinks that wether Gon sees value in him is more important. Killua is an extremely complex character with so many intricacies, it's impossible for his character to be interpreted in the exact same way by two different people. Though I think, no matter the interpretation, it's clear his main motivation is love (familial, platonic, and possibly romantic). He acts aloof and ice-cold towards almost everyone, but when he truly cares for someone, he will do anything for that person. We see him do this first with Gon, then later on with Alluka. His love for Gon blinds him from doing or seeing what is best for himself and causes him to do rash and idiotic things. This is where elements like his stalking of Gon and Palm on their """date""" and the "lovers suicide" come into play. Only his time spent away from Gon and with Alluka directly after his fight with Neferpitou open his eyes to the fact that he was almost obsessive and how protective he was over Gon. The problem with this, though, is that Gon would have died if it wasn't for Killua's devotion, so it almost made Killua *right* to do that. It justifies his behavior, and Killua could have easily seen it that way. But he is to clever to excuse his actions like that. *This* is why they separated. Killua needed to spend time away from Gon to reflect, and he needed someone else to devote the front of his love towards (that "someone" being Alluka). Gon also needed to become less dependent on Killua and spend some time on his own to catch up on all that he missed and needs to do (namely homework and paperwork). When thinking about all that lead up to this scene and all that comes after it, I think that this view of the series and this scene is both canon-compliant and leaves the gaps open to interpretation (ie. what type of love it was that Killua feels towards Gon and just how much Gon values Killua in return). But yes, Killua's love for Gon is beautiful, and Gon's love for Killua is beautiful in turn.
This is a foreshadowing of what happens to Gon later on. Because there's a line in the ending song Hyori Ittai which says 'Brighter the light, Darker the shadow'.

This scene says a lot about the friendship of Gon and Killua. The whole episode was showing all the veteran hunters putting down Killua for abandoning Kite and saying he was worse than a loser. Killua was beating himself up for running away. Gon was unconscious out the whole time but when he woke up he did nothing but put Killua's fears at ease; That Kite isn't dead, and he did the right thing. Gon was the only one who supported Killua.

No matter how many times I watch this video (and this is probably more often than I should), this sentence always gets under my skin and hits me right in the heart.
Killua is again reminded of how innocent Gon is and this shouldn't be the moment for him to spoil it. He is perfectly aware that he could just be an asshole and tell Gon right away what actually must have happened to Kite. He knows but he doesn't say anything and he doesn't want to be the reason why Gon might end up broken.
Killua doesn't even consider himself worthy enough to be with Gon and that makes everything much more painful since we all know how much effort he puts into their friendship and remaining with his friend.
It's because he doesn't know what else to do and as much as it will hurt him, he doesn't want to let go of his friend. The turning point which made him realize how much he loves Gon but this is just my personal opinion. Well, everything is but whatever.

It all depends on whether Killua believes that Gon's optimism is due to his misunderstanding of the situation versus a simple determination to always hope for the best and press forward. I think you could argue both perspectives, but regardless of how Killua sees it, the reality is that Gon was indeed in a state of denial. This is brilliantly demonstrated with his eventual break-down and complete loss of control in the face of Kite's apparent death.

This scene is so precious to me, when i first watched HxH i was genuinely feeling down because of the tone this entire episode went for, and Gon *actually* lift me up, so i could relate to what Killua said of him being "light"... And then theres the scene that follows this one and got depressed again and stopped watching HxH for like 2 days😂😂, but yeah, incredible scene this one, one of my favorites for sure.
This is the moment that HxH most strongly subverts regular shonen tropes. Gon is the main character of a shonen, so when he says "NO. MY FRIEND IS DEFINITELY ALIVE!" We should all think "ok yeah that means he's probably alive but there will be a hard-fought battle to save him."
Well...there WAS a hard-fought battle. But it turned out, it was never possible to save him because he'd been dead from almost the start.

One of the most powerful scenes in all anime history. The music, voice acting, cinematography, subtlety of it all. This scene trancends it's own already great anime to a true masterpiece. Funnily enough this scene didn't have the same effect on me on the first watchthrough of HxH, only when I was able to fully grasp the story and it's intricacies was I able to acknowledge the beauty of it.

Gon is so naive/optimistic and that's his biggest flaw/strength because he's literally just a child in a war scenario (not your average "let's save the day" shounen vibe) at the same time that smile in his face is what gives strength to his friends to keep going forward during hard times (Palm, Shoot and mainly Killua). That's why watching the harsh reality breaking his hopes of seeing Kite once again is so heartbreaking, because we don't wanna lose our light, our sunshine, the smile on Gon's face.

This scene is so deep and meaningful for Killua, because he gets to see an ocean of hope in Gon's eyes. Looking deep into his character, Killua was raised to be a killer and was trained and a weapon. He was literally tortured untill he became physically immune to poison and electricity. In the Hunter Exam Killua is expose to the real world and somebody of his age for the first time. Killua loves Gon more than he loves himself because he never had someone who actually care about his emotions in his entire life. He doesn't believe his worth of being loved or having friends because the didn't raised him that way. Killua thinks of himself as a coward for running away from Pitou and leaving Kite to die, even though that decision saved their lives from most certain death he still hates not being able to save Gon or kite in a that situation. I love Hunterxhunter and how many layers its characters have, it's honestly my favorite show of all time.

This scene is the buildup for when gon loses control. Here killua compares him to light itself because gon is a beacon of positivity and innocence. Then when pitou finally tells gon kite is dead all of the light fades away and gon becomes darkness itself. When I think of the word fury gon in that moment is what I see in my head. Also this scene hits really hard the first time you watch because you’re not positive kite died and then moments later there’s the scene of pitou underneath the tree with kite’s head on her lap.

Like I suspect he was aware he had more than friendship feelings cos Killua is so perceptive, but something about this interaction suggests a breakthrough in exactly how deep those feelings run. Bruh I couldn't speak English well and don't really want to say much, and you're not all that wrong about the friendship and light-darkness interpretation....but ignoring the romantic coding here is true lacking doing research itself, saying people are assuming things when they suspect Killua's feelings not all that platonic (well doesn't mean that it's sexual either) is even more ridiculous once you realize just how much effort the Mangaka had put here describing their bond and interactions....
According to the manga, the Mangaka has planted TONS OF hints and subtexts implying that yes, Killua (no matter he's gay, bi or whatever) IS in love with Gon, both platonically and romantically, and this very likely already happend in Greed Island arc, as Hisoka himself has noticed Killua's feelings (very likely during their dodge ball match), just Killua himself wasn't aware of it at that time. That's why he was so unfriendly to Bisky who looks like a little girl from the start (as we know Killua doesn't naturally hate or look down on girls from how he wanted to be friends with Canary), because that was not long after how Gon "confessed" his feelings about how grateful he feels to have Killua as his friend, and Killua was indulged in that happiness that he subconsciously didn't want others to join them interfering his time with Gon (as we could seein Heaven's Arena, Killua didn't mind Zushi joining the gang and hanging out as a trio, hence he felt different now), and it's crystal clear all he cared about during his second Hunter exam try was returning to Gon as fast as he could (the badge number 1219 itself implied this as well, as it could read as AI-NI-I-KU : "I want to go and see you" in Japanese goroawase, so this was definitely the Mangaka implying here that Killua wanted to return to the game real quick not because he enjoyed the game, but he missed Gon and didn't want to leave his side). And now we know that probably most of the scenes Killua felt blessed with Gon's words in GI were romantic-coded (Hisoka is canonically "engaged" with a man and he interpreted Killua's reaction to Gon saying "It must be Killua (for me to hold the ball)" as "Killua's most beloved person is Gon", hence you know what the author wants to imply here), it's really obvious that this YOU ARE LIGHT scene is most likely Killua realising himself that his feelings for Gon itself is so strong that it might already went beyond friendship. Even if Killua was quite confused and still referred Gon as his "best friend" during his mind battle with Illumi's needle, it was clear that Killua was quite upset and jealous about all Gon's "dates", including Palm-the-cleans-up-nice-version (go read this part in Japanese manga, depending on the language the Mangaka used here it's definitely jealousy which Killua had shown here during the "date" ask and the stalking scene), and Killua himself might figure it out at some point as he joked about "lover's suicide" with Gon during the palace invasion- and hell he was serious, because Meleoron here already noticed that "You couldn't be joking because you looked incredibly sad when Gon said non of your business" and "this is something Killua wouldn't say and could never speak about", thus this means Meleoron himself realized that Killua holds deep feelings for Gon, that would drive himself want to die with him together (and like "lover's suicide"), would make him hurt as hell once Gon shows some extent of rejection, and this is some kind of feeling Killua couldn't possibly speak out loud nor convey to Gon, nor would he ever discuss this with anyone. It's really clear that this is referring to something beyond friendship here, as even you assume Killua's friendship might grow unhealthily obsessive or what, it really wasn't something that he "couldn't say and wouldn't talk about", and letting Gon knowing how deep this "Friendship" is couldn't possibly let him lose their friendship. Nevertheless, Killua was so angsty about "I may not able control my emotions and wouy cross a turning point that could never possibly turn back, once I ask some questions about how Gon views about me in this mission (as a friend or not?) " and the Narrator said here "Everyone could ascend to the next step if experiences were accumulated, but the fear of losing something precious (friendship with Gon) was so great that Killua couldn't gather his courage to even do it a try".....
It's about relationship upgrade ("next step"). It's about deep feelings. And it's likely a taboo ("You couldn't say and wouldn't talk about it"). If Gon noticed this, there's a possibility he'll stop being friends with Killua. So WHAT is exactly this feeling's about? Heck this was so obvious that my head hurts, and friendly reminders there are SEVERAL characters inside the show noticed the nature of Killua's feelings as well, to name but a few: Hisoka, Palm, Meleoron, Ikalugo and Illumi. Biscuit might got a chance and Shoot noticed some sign as well. It was so obvious since late Chimera Ant Arc that I wouldn't be surprised if the Mangaka told us that even Alluka, Kite and Ging already knew about this as well. (Hisoka already discussed Killua's feelings for Gon with his gay boyfriend Illumi; Plam basically treated Killua like a love rival ever since he declared that Plam was the one interfering with him and Gon and demanding her to disappear and leave them alone, and later on Plam knows what Killua wanted to hear while crying how he couldn't help a breaking Gon, was that Gon needs him more than anyone else; Meleoron and Ikalugo both know that Killua intended to do "lover's suicide" with Gon, and the fact that Gon didn't come along with this wish; Shoot noticed Killua's "fading away" and Bisky knows the most effective way to provoke Killua is endangering his relationship with Gon....and Alluka (in Japanese )was using a specific formal way talking to Gon, implying he's someone she thinks she should respect, and she actually thinks she should "share" and even "return back" Killua to Gon when she's his blood-related little sister neglected for years and Gon is like....well, a friend of her brother's who she just met first time? Friendly reminder again that Alluka is a trans girl, a queer character, and Killua is likely the only family member who respects and vocally supports her queerness,and she actually read moods and understands how her family are not very happy with her existence and how Killua treated Nanika bad for once..... It could be understandable if she found some queerness on Killua, she will support her brother as well)
You know there is something going on when the Mangaka himself is a man so enthusiastic about writing Gay and cross-dressing characters that he once got an idea about publishing a gay sport manga, then having so many characters acting so.... AMBIGUOUSLY GAY in his latest manga, like having Illumi saying something like "my engagement ring and premarital contract with Hisoka", giving a name "KuLeoLove" to some radio station audience in Yorknew Arc, making Killua giving a card which named "rainbow 🌈 diamond" and it's effect "propose with this card and whoever you proposed to will definitely say yes" to Gon once he won it (when he could have easily won any other cards like some medicine or magical items, and the Mangaka chose this)..... I could go on and on, about how this Mangaka Togashi Yoshihiro himself LOVES messing with the idea of gay and gender-fluid characters, and is probably a butthurt shipper of his own gay characters. And friendly reminders again, among all the gay and queer characters Togashi has created so far, I have never seen a pair that has such amount of romantic subtexts and intended ambiguous queerness as Killua and Gon. The only pair that could compete with them in romantic subtexts in HxH is Meruem and Komugi (and if you're trying to find similar cases in his former works well there are Yusuke and Keiko, Hiei and Mukuro.... Heterosexual couples but all plented with subtle romantic themes).
So to me it's a natural thing to assume that Togashi wrote Killua as a character who develops a romantic teenage crush on his best friend and is uneasy and confused about it, and Gon probably just thinks the way all dudebro does like we are bros and we are best friends and has little idea about what exactly is Killua going through... And I'm quite sure that Togashi himself very likely ships Killugon so very hard, that he spent several chapters to illustrate how this relationship develops and dedicated a whole arc on how Killua got aware and suffered from it.
Although it seems Gon still doesn't think Killua more than anything but a really dear friend, I wouldn't be surprised if Togashi already shipped them to the extent that he doesn't care about it and is prepared to make him reciprocate Killua's feelings before the final ending. The only thing preventing Togashi from making all his gay couples balantly obvious and canon instead of throwing ambiguous queerness is the generally homophobic Japanese culture and the generally homophobic audience of weekly Shounen Jump. In consideration of their weak mind which couldn't hold too much gayness he learnt his techniques of using metaphors and creating ambigious lines. Though these still haven't stopped him from making Alluka a canon trans girl.

I'm about to go off on a "bit" of a tangent here, but I promise you, I totally see where you're coming from! I think this reading of the scene is completely valid, so don't think that this is my disagreeing so much as me giving my two cents in the matter.
In my eyes, Killua is queer-coded, and Gon is as well (though, to a lesser extent) and I think that is the reason why so many people ship them. They have an *extremely* moving friendship and dynamic to start off with, and it's blatantly obvious how they were truly meant for one-another; for sure platonically, and maybe romantically as well! (I should say now, before I continue, that shipping them in a sexualized manor is disgusting, and if someone does ship them in that way, they need to take a *long* break from the internet, to say the least.)
This scene, the first time I watched it, was a pretty solid confirmation of the nature of Killua's feelings towards Gon. There is no denying that, right now, Gon is the most important thing in the world to Killua, but he assumes that Gon feels differently. He thinks that, because Gon is more focused on being a hunter and Kite and Ging, he is less important than those things. He doesn't even mind thinking that he is less important than those things as long as he can stay by Gon's side. In a way, he even assumes that he may be unwanted entirely, so much so that he needs to ask for permission to continue on with Gon, "But even so, is it still okay if I stay by your side?"
I think that it's clear that Killua is stating that Gon is beautiful-blindingly so-to him, and wether you think of that statement as platonic or romantic is up to the viewer. Taking this scene by itself, with it's meaning at face value (or taking it as something written to be perceived as queer) it's easy to be read as a statement of strong romantic feelings. I thought that for quite a long time, frankly, but, as I've rewatched the show and gone back to think about it, I've realized that not quite that. It Killua's anxieties and fears being voiced through the lenses of his devotion towards Gon. His asking for permission to stay with Gon: his tone, his unsure expression, the context, and everything that follows the scene just backs this up more. It's important to remember that, in this arc, Killua's largest internal conflict is if he should stay with Gon or not; if he's any use to him at all. Killua is finally able to see that he has value within himself, but now he thinks that wether Gon sees value in him is more important.
Killua is an extremely complex character with so many intricacies, it's impossible for his character to be interpreted in the exact same way by two different people. Though I think, no matter the interpretation, it's clear his main motivation is love (familial, platonic, and possibly romantic). He acts aloof and ice-cold towards almost everyone, but when he truly cares for someone, he will do anything for that person. We see him do this first with Gon, then later on with Alluka. His love for Gon blinds him from doing or seeing what is best for himself and causes him to do rash and idiotic things. This is where elements like his stalking of Gon and Palm on their """date""" and the "lovers suicide" come into play. Only his time spent away from Gon and with Alluka directly after his fight with Neferpitou open his eyes to the fact that he was almost obsessive and how protective he was over Gon. The problem with this, though, is that Gon would have died if it wasn't for Killua's devotion, so it almost made Killua *right* to do that. It justifies his behavior, and Killua could have easily seen it that way.
But he is to clever to excuse his actions like that. *This* is why they separated. Killua needed to spend time away from Gon to reflect, and he needed someone else to devote the front of his love towards (that "someone" being Alluka). Gon also needed to become less dependent on Killua and spend some time on his own to catch up on all that he missed and needs to do (namely homework and paperwork).
When thinking about all that lead up to this scene and all that comes after it, I think that this view of the series and this scene is both canon-compliant and leaves the gaps open to interpretation (ie. what type of love it was that Killua feels towards Gon and just how much Gon values Killua in return).
But yes, Killua's love for Gon is beautiful, and Gon's love for Killua is beautiful in turn.
