I think the amp sounds very digital compared to the neural dsp ones. But I still use the precision drive pedal in front of the neural amps, and I use the effect section all the time for ambient stuff :)
This plugin kinda feels like a Swiss Army knife: 10 different tools but no one is particularly great at its job. Compared to some of Neural DSP’s plugins, especially the Archetype Nolly, it seems to fall short. I should also add that I don’t own the plugin, but judge from the demos and mixes I’ve heard from those who use it
I was looking for something like this a while ago, and wish I just went with a more expensive NeuralDSP plugin instead. Toneforge was too difficult to avoid, because of the price, but as you've said, it does a lot of things, but doesn't really do any of them too well. Nolly sounded soooo much better, and now that Petrucci is out, it's just too difficult to compare the two
can't remember if the first video I watched from your channel was the old Toneforge Misha video or the BIAS one (the 1st one) but you have come a looong way bro! awesome to keep seeing this channel grow!
By itself, yes. However, it may be useful as a “filling foam” on the mix, (really sounds like foam 😆), and the clean tones are ideal to me. Blending in the Fortin Nameless usually gives excellent results, but it gets too expensive and the Toneforge was supposed to be enough so... 🤷♂️

My 2 cents You made it sound usable in the mix so I think that is the most important part. A lot of tones don't sound great by themselves but in a mix it ends up working with a huge drum and bass track holding it down. Good job!
I'd say that's the point of Toneforge amp sims that people miss, everything is geared towards being mix ready and not necessarily "pretty" on their own. Meanwhile what they usually like jamming and practicing with isn't ready for a mix.
I tried it when it came out. Absolutely hated it. I try once in a while to use it but I just can't get it to sound even decent. Gonna try copying you and maybe use it for doubling or something haha :D
I agree with you! It's still a very useful plugin. However It lucks so many effects to my taste as a creative tool. Therefore, I still use Overloud TH-U which has a lot of different high quality amp sims as well as effects like phaser, flanger, octaver, pitch shifter, ecc. which many nowdays plugins don't have.
I stumbled across Nalex last Dec. They have several free amp sim VST's covering a variety of different amps and they all sound pretty good and seem to be fairly accurate to the original amps that they are inspired by.
In Dec I did a blind test with a bunch of amp VST's going for a modern metal tone, a Petrucci Mesa tone, a 5150 tone, etc... and was truly surprised by the results; a few of the best tones were the free VST's but I would say the tones that were capable of shattering both space and time were always the paid VST's. However, in one test the Nalex Gerbert VST scored a 9/10 for a tone similar to the one in the song The Olive Tree by Scale the Summit. Now if I could just play more than a few notes in a row without flubbing I would have something! (tone is in the hands, I am finding out that this is way more true than I would have ever believed) Keep up the great work, you have a great channel and have a very good ability to explain things quickly and clearly and I think you have a high degree of credibility as well with guitar playing skills are clearly pro level.
I can't help thinking that I might have sparked you to do this video (based on a comment I made last week asking what you still thought of TFMM and how it compares to stuff from Neural or STL ToneHub, etc...) In any case, I am really glad that you did this because often when I am just playing and I often pick TFMM to jam with. The other VST that almost always gets my attention is the Archetype Plini, that plugin is awesome. This may not be a tone that works for all modern songs but for the ones that it does work for it sounds great - for example it can be set to sound virtually identical to the guitar in Misha's song "Breeze" and that song is a ton of fun to play! Thanks again for revisiting this slightly older plugin. As usual, your content was great and your playing is always very inspiring. Your videos have truly helped me get a much better tone out of my gear.
Hey man, big fan of your content, i recently bought this plugin and am really happy with it. What IRs did you like the most on combination with this plugin? Did you tried the ggd zilla cabs in it? I might add an ir to the list or just get the fortin cali and have the use of both. Grettings from México.
I've loved everything you've done, and while I still liked this video, I absolutely hate this plugin, sorry. Never liked it then, still hate it now. One of the biggest scam in the plugin world in my opinion, and I fell for it, while I should have gone with the Fortin Nameless. The Nameless was released at the same time, and still absolutely rips today, even with stock IRs.
Exactly how I feel man. You know it's bad when free amp sims (ie: LePou Lecto) + free cabinet IRs (ie: Catharsis s-preshigh) + free ODs (ie: TSE 808) sounds 100x better. I think the JST Toneforge Ben Bruce was alrightish (not worth buying tbh), but every other amp sim they've put out has been garbage. It's stupid how they even locked Misha's presets behind a pre-order paywall with this. Though I will say that I'm not a huge fan of the Neural stuff other than Plini/Nolly, the amp-based ones (ie: Nameless, NTS, Omega) feel a bit too raw for my tastes. Some people want a true raw "amp in a box" experience, but I personally prefer a bit more polished sound for my plugins as that's less tweaking and post-processing to deal with.
@@Ghost17110 thanks for your point of view. Looking at picking the guitar up again lately and Neural looks great. You mentioned more polished, what sims do you prefer?
It doesn't sound "bad" per se, but it had the MASSIVE MISFORTUNE of launching very close to the first of the Neural DSP stuff. There's absolutely no competition imo

Thank god for this video!! It definitely helped me get a better tone! But What's the best mic to use on the JST 4x12? I seem to be having this issue where I find a decent tone but it sounds different after recording it.
This plugin has some lovely effects, and I certainly enjoy the modeled Precision Drive for chasing Misha tone, but the amp is hot, fizzy trash. Even with the presets supposedly put together by Misha himself, it's *bad.*
ChessmasterHex It's really hard to position presets as an added bonus when they're totally standard the majority of competing products To me, it always came across as manipulative
I still feel that out of the JST plugins, the Ben Bruce plugin gives the tightest most basic metal tone that makes anything sound half decent at least.
Do this to the Jason Richardson plugin bro! I dont know why i am drawn to it....i just kniw there are way easier plugins for a tone but i am still drawn to using it.
Man good content, I have a question as I see you're using Steinberg interface ,my interface takes arroung - 30 dB ( -16 dB on hi z ) even when gain knob all the way off . Is that normal ? Or I have a defected item man ?
It got a huge update a few weeks ago. It now contains Dual cab sim (with mic positions) and a digital EQ. But i still can´t get it to sound good. Im a noob or this plugin sucks , or both. Damn.
Advanced and Standard were merged into Ultimate mode and given to all customers. If you purchase today you get ultimate version which includes the back of the amp.
After owning it since release, I STILL regret it. Please don’t get this plugin. It’s okay with GGD zilla cabs but it’s still so much work. The effects and precision pedal are great but the amps suck. Really great potential but it’s just whack
i try everithing with this, just the precision drive works fine, the rest its just a bunch of options that sound nothing near to acceptable, in comparison with other plugins, considering fluff or ninja are free.
I heard the demo of the Andy James plugin the other day that Andy did and it sounded very good... I'm always suss on those ripping demos though because the best plugin in the world won't fix a shitty DI tone.
I tried both Andy James and Will Putney and I liked Will Putney better. I could dial tones close to Archetype Nolly with it. But the Neural DSP stuff is just top tier and pretty much on top of the mountain.
I already no it’s going to suck before the video starts because I tried it when it came out. I went back to the free plug ins lol It was a time before neural
He did a P3 tone video using the Fortin Nameless and it was spot on so if you want a misha tone, watch it. I tried the Cali personally and it's incredible, highly recommend it
Cali is incredible and the built in cabs are as well. I ended up buying it even tho I already had the omega because they sound different enough to still be usable. The only knock I have on Cali is the lack of effects pedals considering the clean channel. I feel like they should've tossed a delay and a verb in at the very least, but you can compensate with external vsts.
Hi! I have a dilemma, should I get a processor (helix or hx stomp) or should I get an audio interface? Or maybe I should do both? I don’t have a powerful pc btw. I want to hear your guys’ opinions
Ive always used amp sims (started on bias and now im using neural dsp products) and its just pretty convenient. Bias was shit lmao but neural dsp products are insane for the price. For less than 200 you can really get some ridiculous tones.
djent is totally a genre that sounds good. Because I’m recording music and sometimes gig, so I though that it would be great to have a processor and use it both ways
It doesn't sound "bad" per se, but it had the MASSIVE MISFORTUNE of launching very close to the first of the Neural DSP stuff. There's absolutely no competition imo EDIT: Wow nevermind, the actually amp sim itself sounds way worse than I remember haahahahha
Man, i wish i knew what good tone really sounded like by the time i got this plugin at presale and even got the advanced version. Huge pain in the butt to dial, just garbage overall in terms of amp modelling.
Now to think of it, I tried others and still have them and they were also terrible. Thank you for the reminder, I will uninstall them now since I didnt even remember I had them haha.
I've been watching all of your amp sim videos and you basically say that everything is "good", "killer", "awesome". That really doesn't help me. I scroll down to your comments to get some real views and a lotttt of people are saying that this thing doesn't sound that good and newer amp sims sound better. Can we get some comparisons with other amp sims? Can you point out criticisms a little more, or give us some cons? When you say everything is good you're basically saying nothing is. That isn't helpful to me as a player, and it hurts your credibility as a content creator because you'll be known as the person who says everything is good. What amp sim do you personally use for your music and why? Why choose that oe over others? Recommend that! That helps the people who are subscribing and building your channel, your audience, the people who actually matter. Otherwise your videos will sound like ads, like how this one sounds like. Help us make good buying decisions by recommending stuff that's good! A demo/review is useless without comparisons to competitor products.
I make videos on things that I try out. Most of the time I’m happy with how I can get them to sound which is why I make a video on it. This isn’t an ad. Neither is anything else on my channel, otherwise I would be much less monotone than I am in my videos. With that in mind, I’m not getting paid, nor am I obliged to say that this piece of freeware is good. If people don’t think it sounds good, that’s fine. My credibility as a content creator has nothing to do with my opinion on a product, it’s on my ability to showcase its features and share my experiences so people can trial it themselves and make their own informed judgements based on their style, playing and workflow. A demo or review is simply that, a demo or a review of the product being showcased. There isn’t a checklist that says that I need to compare it with other products. It wouldn’t be fair to put this video up against anything else I have demo-ed either, as this is completely free whereas others aren’t. I say everything is good because in my experience it was good, and I was able to get a sound that I was happy with out of it. If I wasn’t happy with it, I wouldn’t spend my time writing a riff with it, recording it, mixing it and then waste my time criticising it. There is no ‘one plugin to rule then all’, just like there is not one guitar, one pedal, or one amp to rule them all. Everything is just a tool, and if I’m happy with what I can do with it, I’ll make a video on it.
You have to like Misha's tone as Bulb, not Periphery, to appreciate this plugin. If you don't like what he considers a Djenty rhythm tone (very middy, very open high mid range), you won't like this amp sim. Its that simple. It has nothing to do with Neural DSP vs JST.
I was going to preorder the sim but I was mad because they had two versions of this product and JST wanted to make us pay more to unlock some presets. The marketing for this product was awful. I'm sorry, I really love JST products but I didn't like this sim.
Agreed, the built in IR's were awful and you'd have to fiddle forever to get something useable. Misha himself doesn't actually use it which should tell you enough imo. The precision drive is nice tho, ill give them that.
I get better tones with Pod Farm and custom IR than this plugin. Got it 50% off on a sale then and I still have buyers remorse....STL Tonehub and Fortin Nameless is the real deal. Not this buzzy, no-dynamic plugin.

Same here buddy.
What about using the just precision from TFMM in front of a Neural Amp? Is it possible to bypass the amp as well as the cab?
@@altizeraudio yes! It works but it's not as great as actually using the pedal of course
Would you mind to make video how do you achieve that ambient guitar tone which we hear in background?
I just keep finding you dude between here and the djent shitposting page on Facebook 😂
CC: Keon Hushman and Misha Mensa.
Love your stuff
Could you share your presets?
Sounds way better changing the i.r... might be cheating but ill let it slide. Its kind of a hissy amp sim imo
i try everithing with this, just the precision drive works fine, the rest its just a bunch of options that sound nothing near to acceptable, in comparison with other plugins, considering fluff or ninja are free.
Have you ever tried plugins like STL tones Andy James tonality plugins? If so what do you think?
I heard the demo of the Andy James plugin the other day that Andy did and it sounded very good... I'm always suss on those ripping demos though because the best plugin in the world won't fix a shitty DI tone.
The STL will putney plug in is a monster I bought it last year and definitely don't regret it.
I tried both Andy James and Will Putney and I liked Will Putney better. I could dial tones close to Archetype Nolly with it. But the Neural DSP stuff is just top tier and pretty much on top of the mountain.
where are the guitar cable??
Damn Good!
I hope your making money off this stuff or your music dude your an amazing producer mixer and player.
Imagine having to pay to subscribed to something, in order to be eligible to pay for the advanced version...
I already no it’s going to suck before the video starts because I tried it when it came out. I went back to the free plug ins lol
It was a time before neural
Sounds like a line6 ampsim from 2005.
So hard on that Misha Dent train. This plugin never seemed great when it came out.
Do you think Fortin Cali is the best plungin so far ? and Do you think Fortin will do Misha Archetype style amp ?
He did a P3 tone video using the Fortin Nameless and it was spot on so if you want a misha tone, watch it. I tried the Cali personally and it's incredible, highly recommend it
Cali seems to be the new hotness. If I wasn’t getting an axe fx I would have bought Cali fucking yesterday
Cali is incredible and the built in cabs are as well. I ended up buying it even tho I already had the omega because they sound different enough to still be usable.
The only knock I have on Cali is the lack of effects pedals considering the clean channel. I feel like they should've tossed a delay and a verb in at the very least, but you can compensate with external vsts.
hey bro by the way where are u from.?
Hmm i think axefx3 has inputs and can double up as an interface but idk if helix has one but if you plan on recording id just get an interface.
djent is totally a genre that sounds good. Because I’m recording music and sometimes gig, so I though that it would be great to have a processor and use it both ways
Usage only at home? Get a decent audio interface (Focusrite for example) and decents plugins (I recommend Neural DSP stuff) - cheaper and better ;-)
Interface, in my opinion
It doesn't sound "bad" per se, but it had the MASSIVE MISFORTUNE of launching very close to the first of the Neural DSP stuff. There's absolutely no competition imo
EDIT: Wow nevermind, the actually amp sim itself sounds way worse than I remember haahahahha
Man, i wish i knew what good tone really sounded like by the time i got this plugin at presale and even got the advanced version. Huge pain in the butt to dial, just garbage overall in terms of amp modelling.
For me it always sounded like crap and I am being gentle on this.
When you are guitar nerd Misha Mansoor and your bass player makes a better guitar plugin than you do
Not really a fan of JST as a company to be honest. This is just another nail in the coffin for me...
I hate it. Cant get a decent tone no matter what I do
"Still good"? Was is good at release? I don't think so as there are so many better competitors out there...
Agreed, the built in IR's were awful and you'd have to fiddle forever to get something useable. Misha himself doesn't actually use it which should tell you enough imo. The precision drive is nice tho, ill give them that.
Agreed
I get better tones with Pod Farm and custom IR than this plugin. Got it 50% off on a sale then and I still have buyers remorse....STL Tonehub and Fortin Nameless is the real deal. Not this buzzy, no-dynamic plugin.
I don't use or like amp sims I got this as I was curious what a mistake this thing is Awful waste of money time and effort
Definitely a scam, neural DSP is much better
