Black Widow Mine Exploration: Ghost Caught on Tape?

  • We recently undertook an arduous, mountainous hike to the remote, abandoned Black Widow Mine where we discovered many interesting things including a possible ghost that we inadvertently caught on tape. Many thanks to TH-camr Max Wheeler for pointing out this strange anomaly in the video.
The Black Widow Mine is a massive mine with over 7000 feet of workings spread out through six complicated levels. The mine is accessed via two tunnel entrances. One entrance is much higher on the mountain than the other one. The upper and lower workings are connected inside the mine by a 300-foot inclined winze. This was an impressive mine, and the strenuous hike to reach it was definitely worth it. Towards the end of the video, we inadvertently caught something on tape that defies explanation. A possible ghost sighting? You be the judge. We also explored the mining camp located outside the upper tunnel entrance. Interesting, unusual things you will see in this video besides the "ghost" include an intact, antique Master Lock from the early 1900s and a hangman's noose (yes, a noose!) strung up deep in the lower workings.
The Science Channel aired an episode of their TV show "Strange Evidence" which featured my haunted Horton Mine video footage! The episode was titled "The Devil's Mutant" and aired in Season 3 during June 2019. Check it out!

    It's definitely not a reflection.
If you look closely, whatever it is is completely blocking the shadow of the wall from the light until it moves out of the way.
Something was in the light's path.
And after it moves you can see that shadow of the wall.
If it had just been a reflection of the minerals, you would still see the shadow as the light was hitting it from other angles.

Im a skeptic and highly interested in the paranormal. Id like to believe there is something supernatural in the world and it isnt as plain and boring as we perceive it. But, ive never found any convincing proofs or possibilities of paranormal events in my short term of browsing paranormal videos on the web as a hobby. I've also never been afraid of the dark, or had irrational fears such as the fear of ghosts or hauntings.
But your "paranormal" videos genuinely terrify me. The fact that your channel is dedicated to exploring these abandoned places and not actually hunting ghosts is what makes it seems more genuine. Ive found a definitive sound explanation for every such video ive ever seen except yours.
But, who knows. This might just be an elaborate hoax. Even if it is one, its an extremely good one.

I understand, A few modifications, and a tether, perhaps a crash cage. but then again you have some very wet conditions, not to mention the possibility of trapped gas.
You could give the idea to a robotics team at the local university to puzzle out. Who knows you may end up with the next gen Go pro remote camera.

those little quadrocopters all the kids are playing with these days are fairly easy to fly especially the ones with 'hover' capabilities then it's no harder than playing a videogame with a remote camera strapped to it
though there might potentially be some issues with signal strength going into dense rocks and far away though just checking out narrow passage and shafts that would be too risky to go manually it should do quite well

You guys definitely share my love for mining history and exploration. Don't know if you ever make it out to Utah, but if you do, there are some really cool mines in a place called Jacob City, and Ophir Canyon. About 35 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, near Tooele and Stockton. You can access the Buckhorn mine in Ophir, which is huge, I've never been to the end of its three levels. Jacob City has the Hidden Treasure Mine, which supposedly the Buckhorn connects to, and the Mono Tunnel Mine, plus many others that are really cool to check out! I've been going to those places about two or three times a year, for the past 10 or 12 years, and still haven't been through all the mines in that area. The ones that are still accessible that is. Keep the awesome videos coming!

Whatever that was at 08:23 - 08:24 appeared to continue moving into the tunnel, *after* the beam of the spotlight stopped moving - so although I initially suspected the _moving_ 'glow', to be something like quartz or other minerals glinting in the moving light, it really does seem to defy explanation - because it only appeared once and didn't reappear when the beam moved away again.
I'm glad I noticed this before I read the comments or info because it affirms that this could be something beyond explanation, or even supernatural(?).

Wish I could identify every rock I see while underground. Participating in this hobby, though, has taught me some things here and there regarding geology, so it hasn't been a total wash. Ironically, I just had a professional geologist contact me a day or two ago wanting to know if he could come along on some trips. That could be the start of a very rewarding partnership, I think! Thanks again for your support!

if you could show us some ore in the walls and how rich it was and what type of mine, gold, silver and what if it was a quartz reef mine, and if there is a face of exposed ore left at the end of a tunnel, and assay it and tell us the results. And how much gold they got out and how much rock they moved. Nerd out basically. Just for interests sake.

Do you guys have ways of assessing a mine's safety before entering? I've been bingewatching your stuff, but there's so much to watch! Why is the presence of water, especially stagnant water, a bad thing? I found some abandoned mine entrances in Colorado but haven't entered very far for safety concerns-and one of them has stagnant water about twenty feet in. Being trapped by a collapse would be a horrid way to go ;)

It's interesting that the noose is in there to begin with. The official story I heard is that it was hung there to remind the miners not to attempt to pilfer any valuable pieces of ore out of the mine at the end of their shift. Thanks, Phillip, for your comments!

7:33 When the miners are finished with the mine, do they blow it up so when you walk it, its a dead end? The miners should have hung the noose at the dead end so that way it had a double meaning.

    • @doktormorris
      @doktormorris 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Wrong. The mine got its name because its infested with black widow spiders, and if you got bitten by a spider, there was no anti-venom back then so the quickest and less painful death would be a bullet straight to the head. But because of flammable gasses in the mines, using a firearm would just ignite the gasses and kill everyone in it, possibly collapsing the mine aswell, so hanging was the only option.
      I just made that up

I explored one of the asbestos mines in my town some 8 years ago about.. I didnt go down in the ground tunnels but there are multiple buildings and a huge landscape. In order to go into the underground tunnels, you need to use and elevator. My cousin and I found some plans and schedules and some old instruction books.
Anyways my cousin was exploring this one particular building and I was hesitating to go into that one. Well, as I passed through the small window, one of the doors banged and scared the hell outta us. We got out of there without any hesitation. Now, this was on a bright sunny day with barely any wind. The door weighed at least 100 pounds as it looked like all the other doors made of steel or something like that and felt heavy. I still wonder to this day what caused the door to close like that. There was another on right in front of it but it remained open..
    Love your videos

Jack Burton A couple other viewers have told me basically the same thing in private messages. When I first approach the noose, I film looking down that tunnel, and it's totally dark. Then I pan over to the other tunnel for a few seconds and then pan back to the first tunnel where I can clearly see something ducking out-of-sight around the bend in the tunnel. Whatever it was, it wasn't there a few seconds earlier when I initially aimed my camera down that tunnel! Pretty damn frightening, if you ask me. Sort of glad I didn't notice it at the time because that would've freaked me out!

I have just recently stumbled upon this channel, with these amazing videos! They are very interesting and maybe even a little dangerous. Anyway, without knowing anything about the people doing this og the people, following this channel - And not knowing if anyone has asked this before - I have a question about this "ghost". Seeing this video, there was two persons in the mine. Isn't it possible the "light" simple comes from this other person, rather than a ghost? Maybe the person went forward, while he was filming a hangman's noose? Just a question - Not a criticism. And also, I am sorry if my english is just terrible, since it is not my native language :)

If you can, please consider enabling/providing subtitles for your videos. I love your content, and have enjoyed caving since my dad took me exploring as a young kid, but I am moderately hard of hearing in a way that causes overlapping sounds to all blend together so it is very hard for me to separate them. In situations like this with various sounds of scrabbling rocks, wind, water, and commentary it can become very hard for me to differentiate what is being said, and unfortunately it seems it is equally difficult for TH-cam's auto-generation algorithms, so CC is not available. Your notes at the top do help, but I would HUGELY appreciate full subtitles as well for those scenarios where I can only parse out about 1 in 3 words being said.
Either way, thank you for your entertaining and educational videos!

Hi, Alexandra! Thanks for your comment! All of my newest videos published within the last year or two do have subtitles in 17 different languages including English. I started doing that due to viewer demand. In the meantime, I have been going back through all my older videos and adding subtitles to them as well. It’s just very time-consuming! Thanks for reminding me about adding the subtitles to my older videos. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos nonetheless, and I do appreciate your feedback and support.

you got balls of steel to be going deep in those tunnels like that. Also, at 8:24 I saw something move on the right when you shined the light, my guess is it was maybe a Rake or something cause they're known to live in tunnels.
