    Go to edit->Transformation Tools->Move keys. Make sure you have already already "weighted the curves". Go to Curves->Weighted Curves. After this use the move tool. Use shift + middle click to drag it in a straight line

    I just have to say that your video was FANTASTIC. I was always so confused or scared of animating in 3D due to lack of knowledge of the graph editor and now it's all so clear. Thank you making the concept so easy to understand :) .

      +Jenna Matsalla The Graph Editor was a scary thing for me while in school too. Once I got the hang of the graph editor everything was so much smoother in my animation. But I'm glad you understand it now :) You will use this a lot in professional studios, so as long as you got the basics now you'll get better at it!

    I'm an animator switching from a different program (my college used Cinema 4D, and now I need to use maya so I can get a real job haha) and I have been struggling to find tutorials on the keyboard shortcuts! I find the interface to be very challenging to get used to after using C4D, which is very basic. Thanks SO much for including keyboard shortcuts and tips to make things faster and more efficient! Best of all...I didn't have to pay for this tutorial. :)

    Great work with the tutorials. Your explanations of how and why you choose to use Maya the way you do is very helpful. Keep them and your demos coming. Could you maybe show how you handle facial animations? Your insights on the walking cycles made a lot of sense.
    Thanks

      +Benjie may-ag I kind of felt the same way. That's the whole reason as to why I set out to create these tutorials. Make them more simplistic and easy to understand. Not follow in my schools footsteps. I did learn a lot from school but could've been improved if teachers actually made it more enjoyable.

    Hey Dave, if you give some "Spacing" there, the weight of the ball would be more pronounced (i.e. the spacing at the crest of those parabolic curves would be less compared to when hitting the ground). And if possible, hold down the 'squash' pose by a couple more frames than the stretched ones.
    You doing a wonderful job, keep it up.
    Thanks,
    Ari

  • @tmsx4ever

    This teach people the very basics about the graph editor but not much about animating a realistic ball. Because of these issues. First and foremost this ball looks like it's alive. Just because it doesn't lose any energy/height with each bounce and it doesn't have enough hang time and squash time as Arindam Mondal already pointed out. It's a really easy fix though to get the height to diminish with time. Just select the Y curve and then select all it's keys and then use the lattice transform in the editor to make all the values shrink down towards the end. And to make more hang time and longer squash time just add frames before and after the apex key or change to weighted tangents and pull those apart horizontally. I think that you should do a follow up on this tutorial. Where you go into more detail on how to use it to make more advance stuff like cycles and coping and pasting keys. And while your at it, make a really good one on the use of the dope sheet editor as well. I find that it's really hard to find a good tutorial on the use of the dope sheet. And be sure to tell the difference in the dope sheet editor between having the scene summary option on and off. If you have already done these I apologize for not checking before I wrote this.

    • @AnimationMethods
      @AnimationMethods  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for the message. The video was only made to cover the basics of the graph editor, as the title suggests, not so much on animating a bouncing ball. But I agree with you about adding the details and making a more advanced lesson. But first you must learn the basics. I don't have a lesson dedicated to the Dope Sheet as of yet. But thanks for the suggestions :) Check our website for all video lessons.

      tmsx4ever but thats exactly the point ... this tutorial is NOT about animating a bouncing ball .... its about the fundamentals of the graph editor, and how to understand it. This tutorial does a great job to show how it works regardless of the software you use, the principles are the same?
      I cannot express the importance and pure power of animating in the graph editor ... in fact its the best way to have total control over animating anything, and by optimizing the graph you will be the best animators out there .... use of the graph editor is the only way to create international top class animations.
      Apologies .... i began 3D in the late eighties working in production in the West End of London using Softimage 3D and XSI .... alas XSI is no longer being developed, so am having to learn Maya ... lol .... i hate Maya.

  • @leighaston1

    On another note with regards to animation .... slightly on a tangent for all you up and coming 3D animators .... its all about reference and observation. If a client or supervisor asks you to animate a flag flying in the wind, the very first thing you do is go to youtube and search for flying flags to see how they move. Same with animals ... youtube them. If theres no good reference online then go to the local zoo and film them moving, and rotoscope over it if necessary?
    Actually this is the same with everything ... lighting .... dynamics .... whatever .... google search things, or go into the real world to observe and film stuff .... observation and attention to detail in with real world, thats your reference and will give you an edge over everyone else. I seldom see it in the real professional world of 3D ... which still to this day surprises me?
    Yeah blah blah ... im old school 3D ;)

      @leighaston1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is actually a very good tutorial on defining function curve mechanics within the 3D work space. The importance of less keys in your function curves, and smooth function curves, is paramount. Plus the simplicity of directional movement makes animation so much easier .... ie only y and z movement, without any x movement, means you have less parameters to focus on getting right (this can help you so much)
    I would like to see how keyframes are added and deleted to just the y movement and not the x and z?
    Can you length vary the handles individually to left and right of the keyframe?
    I also want to know what all the other buttons do in the graph editor ... you didn't tell me what they all did so i'm left twitching?!?!?!??
    Also of course, as was all too briefly stated at the very end of this tutorial, things really start to come together once you start to offset the keyframes, and animation becomes more organic. This should be part of this tutorial i think,
    This tutorial covers so very much about the graph editor .... and yet with less comedy in the narration (although i actually like that as it makes me laugh and is entertaining) there would be a heap load more time to cover the entire use of the graph editor :)
    I have been using Softimage 3D and XSI in the 3D animation industry in London for over 25 years, since it first began in the late eighties. I gotta switch to Maya as XSI is being phased out.
    Thanks to the Animation Methods guys i am picking Maya up pretty fast without even owning the software to play with. After all ... 3D is conceptual, and the method of 3D animation is the same across all 3D softwares .... its just where to find the right friggin button?!?!!?!?
    THANKYOU Animationmethods :)

    This was helpful, except I was having trouble following along because I didn't understand what you were talking about when you spoke about turning on handles. I go under the Show window and everything in there in checked off, which is weird because you only have a few. But if Handles is check off, shouldn't I see them? .There are no Handles on any of the items I make or the free rig I downloaded. Maybe its because I'm using Maya 2014?

    • @AnimationMethods
      @AnimationMethods  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably don't need to worry about "handles". This ball rig was made to work only if you turn on "handles" in the viewport, only then will you see the ball controllers. Most rigs use "NURBS curves" as controllers. So you will have to turn on NURBS curves instead of "handles" to see your rigs controls.

    • @AnimationMethods
      @AnimationMethods  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically the viewport is for getting your main poses and large movements. If you need fine tweaking and small adjustments then the graph editor is better for that. But there are situations where animating on the graph editor is easier then feel free to use it. Which ever is faster for you.

      Bounces are pretty smooth. Not sure what you mean by "isn't smooth". There's nothing jittery about it. If you watch the whole thing I also explain how I don't want to make this over an hour lesson. This is to show how to use the Graph Editor. Not a timing, physics tutorial. You'll learn that later. After you understand the basics. You're welcome to add constructive criticism, not just point out negatives. Which I can do the same for most of your videos I saw on your channel.
