A actual hiking video of the terrain and not someone taking selfies of themselves. Plus no loud , obnoxious music , just natural sounds to enjoy. I enjoyed it so much I put it on full screen to watch , a rear item on you tube.

First of all...thanks for sharing this and aiding to my memories of times past. From 1980 until 2004 I hiked over, well over, 5000 miles in the superstitions, and the
Tule Mountians (south of Coffee Flats and the area of Whitlow wash, and the area east of there, all the way to Globe and Roosevelt Resevoir. We, friends or clients, did an annual hike every year almost the same time of year as yours. (Dec 26th- Jan. 3rd or 4th) We would cover about 125 miles in 9 days, and went off trail for alot of it. It was really nice to see some of those areas again. :) Now, I don't know if you know, but some of the areas you showed hold epic secrets. Places and things not seen by too many eyes. I also recorded all of our journeys, but with still photos, and only a couple a videos. You are extremely courageous to enter and journey those mountains by yourself, seriously. I'm former army and after about 1 year of hiking in there, and having some of our experiences, I wouldnt suggest going in there by yourself without a gun, but that may not even help in some situations. We always went armed and no less than 3 persons. It all depends on where in there you are. We have been shot at, had one of our members backpack nearly cleaned out by 'bushwackers' or transients (which ever you desire to use) at night, and it only stopped by our firearms breeches slamming closed. We've had bear encounters, numerous snake encounters, cat encounters (several different breeds), bad and nasty bird encounters, and the most dreaded, as I saw in your video, lack of water where you intended it to be encounters. There are historical places, pre-civilization places, mysterious places etc.. Anyhows, we should friend each other and I can tell you some places to go see. Alot of which I would never post to the public. I did that once in the '80's with a cliff dwelling, and within 5 years it was trashed with vandalism and graffitti. Your awesome just for the places you went (some extremely dangerous for its inhabitants), and I look forward to watching your video's, or even chatting sometime. I was kinda well known in the Mesa/Apache Jct area for my searches and knowledge of the area, and have compared notes with some of the more recognized historians there. Be careful out there, and good luck. Let me know if you'd like to know what kind of cool things you walked right past. Laterz, a former Arizonian, and Superstition Hiker.

I wonder how many times we ran into each other out there.
I did the same thing around 89-94. I agree one should have no less than a pistola. I usually had a six shooter , a lever action 45-70 ,and a small 4/10 pack gun. (For rabbits in the right time of year) I’d keep two snakeshot loaded in the 357.
I found several hidden places I’ve also never told anyone about.
If you know AJ well ,then you’ll know Gary Holt.
Owned Holt auto. Across Apache trail from the auto zone. That’s who I worked for.
I drove the only 78’ Monza wagon in the area. And was also well known.
Except I never had any maps or anything. Just deadreckoning. And lots of Army training.
      Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for this video. I’ve always wanted to know what it’s like hiking in the Superstition Wilderness Area. It breaks my heart to know that a lot of the areas you hiked have been scorched by the Woodbury Fire (123,000+ acres) this summer (2019). I’m a senior citizen who no longer can hike but I love adventure videos out in nature. Love AZ!

Oh wow, didn't hear about that fire. That is terrible! Now I'm really glad I got the see the Supes before the fire. I was in the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico in 2012 when the Whitewater-Baldy fire started. Saw fire over the ridge one day, climbed to the top of Grouse Mountain to check it out and saw a helicopter flying near a smoking hillside. We were the last ones out of the wilderness at the Catwalks trailhead. The fire later grew to almost 300k acres, largest in NM history. Was lucky to see that place too before that massive fire!

I just watched Predator last night lol. But seriously, I would hike there again solo. I know the place has a stigma to it, but it sounded to me like most of the missing persons cases occurred many decades ago, and related to people looking for the lost dutchman's gold. This is one of those places that people really hype up but if you look at the numbers of people that go in there, there's really nothing to be afraid of. At least IMO.

From what I could tell, most of the deaths that have occurred in the Supes were miners, prospectors and treasure hunters, not hikers... and most of the deaths were a long time ago. I'd love to go out there again, I have a couple of areas I'd like to explore a little more. Ah, someday! You should go up there for a day hike at least, pretty safe on the Peralta trail, it's so crowded :)

.....................Really enjoyed your hiking/camping adventure in such fascinating country.....I love the mystery and beauty of the Superstitions and have ever since I first saw it in the 60's while traveling cross country ( on the highway ).... My last trip to Phoenix in mid 70's the city was covered in smog.....Only disappointing part of your video was toward the end to see the suburbs, I'm only guessing of Phoenix, now reach the foothills of the beautiful mountains...Looks like the smog came with it.......such a shame!!.....But still does not overshadow the rugged loneliness you captured in your video.....nice work and many thanks.

I enjoyed the video. I am a day hiker from Oregon and hiked the 13+ mile Weaver's Needle loop counterclockwise. Bluff Springs to Terrapin, to Dutchman and back on Peralta. I want to hike more of the Superstitions and this showed me some ideas. I loved that you flipped off the prickly pear cactus. It was the only one that got me on my hike.

      @francies4326 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Andrew Eades I think either direction gives you a big workout. I know both directions have a big uphill then a big downhill at the very end. I was told counter clockwise by the locals because of the morning sun is less harsh and you get some shade on Peralta later in the day. Peralta has the most traffic so if you are in any kind of distress, it is more likely someone can help you. I carried 6 liters of water plus two 8 oz. bottles. I only drank 3 liters. No worries at all.

However, your trek was beyond impressive. I recognized a good deal of where you were but still helped to hear the trail names like Hoolie Bacon and JF among others that I haven't spent much time around. Anyway, THAT was quite the backpacking trip through some of the most ruggedness the Supes has to offer! I'll take a look at the northern part of your CDT as I hike/backpack in Glacier a lot and am always curious how others view it.

@@bill1260 Its just a bad idea to go out in this, or any wilderness by yourself. if you get hurt it may be several days before some one comes along to help you. There are some poisonous snakes cougars, and coyotes there but if your careful they won't bother you. Usually your lucky enough to see them running the other direction. The GET starts at first water TH but instead I'm going to start at Lost Dutchman and do the Superstition Ridgeline. I've seen very few snakes in my hikes, but did run into a couple rattlers in the Sierra Ancha a few years ago in the month of May. That was a pretty cool area too that almost nobody hikes.

It's funny, I've been to the Supes twice and both times had high winds blow over my tent. Never had it happen anywhere else, until the CDT last year but that was my fault for setting up in sand. No hike plans this summer unfortunately, trying to play adult for a while. I might get out to Colorado later this summer, and maybe I'll do the Glacier Highline trail in Sept to finish off the CDT properly. Long term, working on a big (3-4k mile) loop in the west.... UT, ID, OR, NV and AZ. That's gonna be an ass kicker!

As a wannabe media artist I was initially put-off by the prospect of enduring '7 days' of indiscriminate hand held video (without index points no-less ;^} ) however I was looking for views from the 'top' of the Superstition mtns. Much to my delight I found myself getting fully engaged with what you were doing. Your approach to documenting your adventure really works. I've trekked the Apache Trail/Roosevelt Dam loop countless times by car (at least 20) and had many a fun-filled trip in rental Cameos and Firebirds :) Closest I came to hiking was getting out exploring the seductive washes and such. I absolutely love that country and I really enjoyed hiking along with you on your solo trip. Thanks :)

Thanks for your feedback. Since this video, I've invested in a GoPro and very recently, a 3 axis gimbal for stabilization. This makes the video sooo much more smooth looking! This was shot on a Sony Nex-7, which I pretty much only use for still images these days.
I've done the Apache Trail drive once, and it's awesome! I can see why you've done it so many times. Having done the drive, it just makes me want to explore more of the area. As much as I wasn't to return to the Supes though, there are so many more places I haven't visited.

Not to make this a run-on thread but ;) I was gonna mention that gimbals can work wonders and make it easier to 'film' on the go but didn't want to seem picky - hey, what works for you :) I have a DJI Osmo mobile mated to my iPhone 7+ with Moment wide angle lens (I *really* want the Moondog Labs Anamorphic adapter) and the Osmo really helps smooth things out plus it insures shots are level when you want them to be - think of it as a hand held self leveling tripod. The Osmo works fine with the Go-Pro. There are trade-offs with the Osmo Mobile when using a smart phone (bottom ports blocked by the gimbal end plate, somewhat short battery life (a few hours depending how 'hard' you push the gimbal), no separate battery and no charging while in use) but I suppose that's the price of its compact package. If you are thinking of a heavier camera and/or gimbal look at the Zhiyun Crane-M (it will handle the Go-Pro at the low end of its weight range). The Zhiyun also has a *lot* more battery. I hear you on the Nex-7 relegated to snaps..my trusty Panasonic's (GH2 and G7) play 2nd fiddle to my iPhone. With apps like FilmicPro and the great on-board camera SW processing they have come a long way since my Moto V60. Good luck and let me know if you have questions.

I hear ya, navigation is one of those things that can scare off a lot of people. For navigation I would recommend reading NOLS Wilderness Navigation:
    www.amazon.com/gp/product/0811710947/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0811710947&linkCode=as2&tag=metalback-20&linkId=QBI6MV56ABND724J
Get yourself a good GPS unit (I use a gamin orgeon 450) and spend a lot of time creating and familiarizing yourself with your route before your hike. By the time I am on the trail, I know most of the major rivers, peaks and landmarks along my route even if I have never hiked there. When planning a route before a hike, I will create a track (not a route, a TRACK) using garmin's basecamp software which is overlayed on the GPS's topo map. Basically, all you have to do now is follow the line on the GPS screen. I may do a video on this so that it is more clear.
What happens if you lose your or break your GPS? On a hike like this, I also carry a printed topo map. You can get these from a bunch of places but I like mytopo.com. They will print any area you specify onto a topo map (they have various size maps too). Other hikes that are less extreme I will just use a basic map printed from the internet instead of a topo map.
If you do have to use your topo map, make sure you know how to use a compass and how to orient your map to your surroundings. If you can do this (it's not hard, covered in the NOLS book), then you should be able to find your way out of most places if you were actually lost. However, to not be lost and navigate easily, I recommend creating a track of the route you want to hike and overlaying that on your GPS map so that you just follow the track on the GPS screen while you are hiking. It's very easy.

PS. the gear you saw in various places was not 'just left there'. I guarantee, someone was watching you the whole time, even if they looked old (leaves, dirt on top.) This is to distract you. The still shot of the stuff with the green containers was a mule packed in cache. Someone was about, definately. Found a few of those myself, along with the guards.

I got a ride to First Water, and picked up at the Lost Dutchman campground. There's maps of the hike and more info here: seekinglost.com/backpacking-the-superstition-wilderness-az/. If you're worried about parking, have a look at the Canyon Lake Marina on the north side. There's parking there in the marina complex, TONS of cars parked there and open to the public. I've parked there before on another hike , looked very safe. You can access Boulder Canyon and La Barge Canyon from there, etc

did you do this hike in the fall or winter. there seems to be an abundance of water holes. my reading of the Superstition Mts is water is the major problem.

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Winter. January. Water... depends on your stands for water quality and how many miles per day you can cover. Personally I didn't find water to be too much of an issue. There was a water source usually once per day. I might have carried 2 days of water once. My blog post (in video description) probably has more details on that than I can recall off the top of my head.

The gold from the Superstitions is it's beautiful natural (mostly) wilderness. Every hill, path or mountain you cross is a challenge with a beautiful completely different landscape.
God I hope like hell the State doesn't start building condos there.
If they do, they will rob us all of one of the most precious wilderness only a few miles away.

Haven't seen them, but I'm aware of the lore around the supes. If you let extremely rare occurrences deter you from doing things in life, well, you'll never do anything. Think of the number of hikes that have occurred in the supes over the years, probably in the millions... a handful of bad stories is probably still less than your odds of running into trouble in normal life. Not worth being scared about if you ask me.

That's when you go, Dec. thru late March.. I suggest going in at Boulder Cyn. towards second water. Circle around at Marsh Valley, then proceed north easterly thru Bull Pass intersecting back to Boulder Cyn.. Lots of water and wood and nobody but some owls.. Bring an MSR water maker and an EPIRB... Have fun, I will be back for more Jan 2017, God willin..

It's called a compass...really handy device. GPS is awesome in it's new world techno ass kiss way, but I'd never count on it. They fail, and some area have bizzare magnetic fields that can disorient them or just shut em down...the Gobi desert is bad even a compass won't work in places. Def get some land nav/orientation training or go with a group or guide.
