This was a great event! I really enjoyed the whole weekend despite the rain. Cheers to the Rebs and the Yanks! And to those who put on this event! - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน
Hokey Smokes! I grew up around the Gettysburg area so I visited it a lot growing up in the 80's. I was lucky enough to see some of the reenactments on the 140th anniversary when I returned to my old stomping grounds while awaiting orders for overseas. It is amazing to see how far along our military strategy has come and how we continue to develop it. It would have been absolutely frightening to be in the Army at that time. God bless all of those Union soldiers that stood up and did what was right.
Nice shooting 🙂🙂 it was humid as heck over the weekend. I live a few miles away down the run. I did the same sort of vid w/gopro for Pickett's charge, several years ago. Good fun & thanks for sharing the soldier's eye view! Be safe & Happy 4th.
Bully good; lads! Brings back fond memories! Glad a younger generation is carrying the torch and our colors; The Old Ones who did it for real back then deserve to be remembered!

I've been in this hobby coming up on 11 years now. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten the chance to participate in any events on the East coast. Maybe next year, I'll go to the Gettysburg event. These look amazing! Great shooting. :)
I was on the other side of the field as you guys, getting pushed and pushing back. This was such an awesome fight. I watched this entire video and you guys did a kick A job. Very impressive. fighting.

@@MatthewVanston sorry, rusty French. I had asked if you'd visited any other battlefields. We have a few men from Canada that joined us at an event this weekend. I try to practice my Quebecois with them.

I attended the 150th in June! Best moment of my life!! :) Not flawless but for my first anniversary event back east? Worth it!

Looks like you were with the Mifflin Guard,so we were your right wing. The early part that you captured was pretty normal as a battle goes, but once we crossed that ravine it got pretty dicey. I remember doing more running than I had planned with rebs right on my tail. Thanks for this. It was a great event and the 2nd day was the best day.
I'm part of 2nd Federal Rifles, 4th Batt. Mifflin Guard are our friends though!

I'd love to do something like this someday. One thing i never understood is how do you decide who lives and dies? Is it random or is there like a selection process
It's random
It depends on the event and what reenacting groups are there. Usually at big National battles [actual battles rather than basic living history] you will be given a card with a real soldiers name and info. It will tell you if they lived or died in that battle. If they died, you die. Alot of the time however, Its just random and based on how tired you are of running, is your barrel too hot, etc. At Prairie Grove, AR in middle of December I fired 27 rounds off in the reenactment...my Musket was too hot to hold even the wood.
I wish my group did Gettysburg door reenactments it surprises for we are a Pennsylvania regiment

What's the melee reenactments like? Is it shadow boxing or full on contact, bar brawl style?
It's pretty rare, I'd say. Mainly due to safety. During our second day's night battle, we did have contact. Each side moved in with strict orders on how to conduct ourselves and our arms. No punches are thrown and no rifles need to be broken. Rifles are usually gently thrust so that the barrels touch and someone takes a "hit". But it's definitely intimidating to charge into a bunch of guys and not know who'll take the hit.

At the beginning of the video one of the officers said “fire by battalion”.I hear this a lot in civil war reenactments but what exactly is a battalion in the civil war ?
A Battalion is a group of companies. For my battalion, it's around 5 or 6.
A regiment would be all 10 companies as one unit. Battalions, as Buccimister correctly explained, are groups of companies, but not necessarily a whole regiment. Since everything in reenacting is scaled down, a battalion is the larger unit made up of companies that may or may not have ever worked together (thus the frequent need for battalion drill) but now operate as one unit commanded by a colonel. The battalion can be split in to wings to give more flexibility to commanders, so later in the battle, you might hear "fire by wing" or "fire by company." A group of battalions would make a brigade commanded by a brigadier general. This only happens at large reenactments and usually requires some additional drill, but it's cool when it works on the battlefield!

@@bradleykeefer8896I’m from Ohio and when it comes to regiments i normally hear about the 8th Ohio. Seems like a pretty cool regiment! Also thanks very much for the information, it really helps! Always trying to learn more about formations and military organizations during the civil war.

The melee was beyond epic, I even squeezed out a few derringer shots before getting tackled. Apparently some one got clubbed with a rifle butt.. Great time
@@PoshingtonSpark Oh sheeze! I got captured by the 16th GA! That was pretty crazy. Luckily they "paroled" me when they moved back.

Your rifle looks like its a bit rusted on top and some pitting as well. At what point would it be unsafe to keep shooting it?
It gets rusty sometimes, especially at this event where it rained almost the whole time. My regiment is highly focused on safety. So I know the ordinance sergeant will let me know if there are any issues. Great question!

So I have a question for the ramrods for the rifles, are they dangerous to the men around you by whacking them by accident or something else?
Ramrods are used to demonstrate loading practices. Ramrods are potential projectiles if used during force on force reenactments and are generally not used. So yeah, they can be dangerous, but we don't use them during battles.
When we are informing the public on loading practices, we do use them. And everyone is instructed on their purpose and must maintain control. I haven't been whacked by a ramrod in my eleven years. But I'm sure someone has lost control at some point and hit someone.
I like re-enacting in the War of Rights game much better.
But in real life you get to feel the misery...I mean the excitement.

How is footage like this have color when WW2 footage is way worse quality?

the fat guy with sword out yelling is just too intense. He needs to chill. Where did you find Captian Willy Nelson? In all my pics of the war, I've never seen a longhair.
First, it may not be represented well, but it's very loud. He is in charge of the left flank of a battalion. He needs to be heard by 50 or more guys on either side of me, or at least the captains of the companies in his command.
Second, we're not all perfect. He probably prefers his long hair just as I prefer short hair. Some of us change our hair or other aspects before events, but not all of us.
I don't think he was any more intense than necessary. But it's interesting to hear your opinion. Willy Nelson! Haha!

It's an immersive way of understanding a tiny amount of how warfare occurred then. Camping is fun. The battles are eye opening.
How do you know when you've been hit? LOL
You don't "know" you've been hit. We shoot blanks...pure gunpowder. But people will take a hit if they're tired or out of ammo. Another reason is if you have an intended ending to the scenario. In that case, your commanding officer will tell the unit to start taking hits.
In short: if you're tired, outta ammo, or gotta lose.

More or less. Basically, it comes down to safety. Using a ramrod adds an element of danger that isn't necessary. You can find reenacting horror stories of ramrods or folks who forgot to remove their live cartridges before an event.
@@buccimister sorry for responding very late i couldnt find the video, with most people using the springfield they wouldve had to tear the minie ball out correct? plus you dont really stuff the paper inside the barrel in a reenactment
@@petergriffin1232 no worries! :) The minie ball was in the paper cartridge. Powder first, ball, then paper to keep it in there. We only use powder to limit potential issues. When we do living history or aren't aiming at people, we'll use ramrods and paper to better demonstrate techniques.
of course but when only using blackpowder wouldnt the ramrod help a bit to push some of the powder down ? and who would bring their live ammo to a reenactment? on accident maybe but you would feel it since its a metal bullet like most bullets, also wouldnt u have to squeeze it out? sorry for everyhting just tryna why yall dont use reamrods in reenactments, would make it alot more realistic tho@@buccimister
Love the questions! You'll see reenactors tap the butt of their gun to help the powder "seat" itself where the percussion cap will hit it. I also tap along my barrel if it isn't too hot. Ramrods help, but they are a potential projectile. Cheers!@@petergriffin1232
Those guys are way too over weight to represent the hardship and deprivation that was common for the average civil war soldier on both sides.
It's true that many reenactors are overweight. I'm pretty big as well. But that's how it is. There are some fellows who are "period correct." But these soldiers were 5' 5" or so. And definitely a lot skinnier. So, you're not wrong, but I'd rather have a bunch of big reenactors vs. no reenactors. And trust me, we all know we're big. :)
