*Michael Jackson loved this song and it's bassline so much he used the bassline in 'The Way You Make Me Feel' in 1987.*

When I was a teenager in the ‘80s I didn’t really think one way or another about Tears for Fears. As I’ve gotten older I started paying attention to what they are actually saying; this is a really powerful song.
I’m pretty sure they were in their twenties at this time. Curt Smith (the singer) has always had kind of a baby face. Even now that he’s much older, you can still kinda see it. Love that you reacted to this. Much ❤️ & ✌🏻 always. 😊

@Jennifer It's amazing how you didn't think of Tears For Fears in the 80's since they were a Huge Group back then.

@@xoxxobob61 That's not what Jennifer said, though! Not that she didn't _think_ of them, more that she just didn't think about Tears for Fears one way or the other - ie had no _strong_ opinion about the band back then. Quite possibly because as teenagers we often tend to get swept up in the _melody_ of well-known songs and sing along with the lyrics without actually pausing to interpret their _meaning._
Another good example might be _Don't You Want Me_ by the Human League. Like many, I blithely sang along to this song as a teenager, not once realising it's a deeply unpleasant song - not about love at all, but about coercive control. 😐

I recommend *Donny Osmond* from the 70's. He was a friend of MJ's. Donny's cover of *Go Away Little Girl* was #1 on the Pop chart in Sept. 1971. It was 2 months before his 14th birthday.
He and his brothers *The Osmonds* also had a hit with *One Bad Apple* when it hit #1 in January 1971 and stayed there for 5 weeks.
The Osmonds and The Jackson 5 became friends, especially Michael and Donny because they were only a year apart in age and so much younger than most others in the music industry at the time. They stayed friends until Michael's death. Michael went concentrated more on his musical career as they got older while Donny preferred to make creating a family a priority over a music career. Donny still performed but at the time he didn't want to spend so much of his time away from the family he wanted.

I knew these guys personally. From my home town of Bath in the UK. They went to a different school than i did but we used to hang out in the city center. They started out calling themselves Victoria Park, then The Graduate....then hit the big time as Tears for Fears. Not my style of music but it has grown on me over the years. I was a big Peter Gabriel/Genesis fan back then. Prog rock was king for me!

I was 20 in 1985. From memory Tears For Fears, Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran and Ultravox were big at the time. U2 were still good and Simple Minds had Don’t You Forget About Me in the charts. Live Aid happened that summer, and Simply Red released Picture Book late in the year. Terence Trent D’Arby hit the charts around that time but I can’t remember if it was 85.

Great reaction. You should check out 'Pale Shelter' by them. BTW, these were two young guys from Bath, in England, who were introverts and loners, but became friends at like age 13 or something. Got into music together, started writing songs. They were probably in their early 20s when they did this video.

The '80s was not my favorite decade, but there were a few groups who made it worthwhile, and this was one of them. I like that you made the same Michael Jackson similarity I detected. I believe it's with his song "The Way You Make Me Feel," which you could pretty much sing along with the intro for this one, lol. Another Tears For Fears song you might want to check out is "Head Over Heels." As always, fantastic reaction filled with great observations and fun commentary. Thanks!

If you listen to the first verse it's also maybe a little subtle but also speaking about how people in the name of Freedom or pleasure do things that hurt the Earth. The line turn your back on Mother Nature so it's definitely a trifecta message have a point don't live frivolously not caring about the damage you're doing or the time you're wasting I also feel like that line while the walls come crumbling down is not just talking about aging but also civilization and the environment just going bad it's like even back then we knew what was going on we knew there would be problems but that's how it goes when people just want to have fun and be spontaneous with Reckless abandon if that makes sense such a banger.

Yup, MJ "stole" this bass line for The Way You Make Me Feel which was released two years later. Apparently it was consented by TFF tho. Great reaction BTW!

One of my favorite groups and they have some really good material you should listen too also! those beats were the sound of the time and they were still very young artists back then! You should listen to Sowing in the seeds and Pale shelter,There is also a great song called Woman in chains which was written when the movement against women being abused finally was out in the open and well we all know this is still happening today right!

These guys broke up for years and got back together and touring again with a new and great album called “ Tipping Point.” Legends is all I can say…go down this rabbit hole if you can….

"Say that you'll never, never, never, never need it...." To me, that's arms race angst, of which there was much in those days. Memory's a funny thing--I miss the 80s, especially all the people that were alive then that aren't anymore (like my mother)--but now we know how it turned out. The Cold War was a very worrisome thing at the time. I'm trying to remember--I think 1985 was pre-Gorbachev. And that's probably gas in CA--in IN in 1985, it was more like 85 cents/gallon.

Not poppy or popular, but TFF had an album called The Hurting. I love that album. Memories Fade and Mad Word to the title song; it’s a much deeper darker album

In the day, I'd buy a magazine called Smash Hits and they would talk about the song and lyrics included so you could sing along when on the radio. Happy Days.
