I grew up among Indians, am fluent in spoken and written Hindi, love India, been to Temples, Gurdwaras, Churches, and enjoyed every moment of my time there. I have Indian friends from the upper classes because of the schools I went to. Many of them went on to become leaders in the Army and Air force and I count myself privileged to know them.
I spent 23 years living in the Middle East. Same story. I loved it. Saw myself engage with them in arguments about the Palestinian situation, sat with them at their dining tables, loved watching them argue among themselves, Lebanese, Syrians, Iraqis and Palestinians, all totally enjoying their points of view over a table of 'mezzeh'.. My employer, a very rich and influential person, once told me I should become Muslim. He even said he could have an Imam come over to his office and make me a Muslim within five minutes. All I had to do was repeat after the Imam that there was only one God and Muhammad was his Prophet. Not much to ask. But the significance was not lost on me. I felt honored, but I also felt like I was being asked to divorce a way of life I grew up with that had given me the knowledge to accept everyone for who they are and respect everyone. In that way, I like that Anthony Joshua is open to accepting of people of different cultures. We should all be like that. What harm can come of that?
But as it is in life, we are tugged at by opposing forces, many of whom don't really care one way or the other of who we truly are as long as they can label us as being one of them. Its like planes, we only hear about the planes that crash. I wish reporters like Kuggan Cassius would have stuck to talking about boxing instead of delving into Joshua's personal life. Its none of his business until Joshua decides to tell us.
