This method turned a several hour job into a little over 30min! I was a little skeptical about separating the ball from the knuckle, but it dropped out perfectly. Now, if only someone could go through and delete all the other videos telling them to dismantle the wheel and or hub. I'm so glad I found this video.
Just changed mine. Hardest part was lining up the pin! Thank you for the instructional!
Dude, that looks crazy easy.
Glad I watched this. Some clown auto shop quoted me 2 hours to replace it. 😕
Thanks mate, I've done a coupe CVs in my outback now. 260,000kms on the clock and still going strong!
I just finished replacing mine. These have an odd number of splines so if the hole for the pin is off just a little you spin it 180. The pin should go in easily with just some taps if it’s line up properly. If you’re hitting it and it’s not going anywhere your alignment is probably off and they can be a pain to get out if you forced it in there. After getting the alignment right the new pin still wouldn’t go in so I reused the OEM Subaru pin from the old CV and it went it super easy. They are reusable pins according to what I’ve read on the forums. Finally if you’re doing this by yourself and you have the car on jackstands be sure you don’t allow the CV Axle to just hang off the transmission. I did that and it separated the inner joint which inadvertently lengthened the whole CV axle which led to a few hours of frustration trying to get the ball joint back on. Eventually I just used the other new CV axle I had and the whole thing went together in about 20 minutes. If it’s really difficult you’re probably doing something wrong
TH-cam can now delete every Subaru CV joint how to videos except this one..!! Excellent ..!!
This saved some time, years ago I did the wheel bearings, I figured I had to remove the whole hub assembly like that job to get the axle out. Never thought about the ball joint trick. Thanks
Sure is fast, when you know what your doing and have the right tools and an air socket gun.
Hey man I really appreciate the video. I have the same car and was nervous about doing this task but you made it easier than an oil change. Keep up the helpful videos
Thanks for showing the technique with releasing ball joint rather than disconnecting strut
Very helpful and concise. Much appreciated.
Solid Video! I love old cars!
This method was way easier than taking the camber bolt way
Good video, thanks. Do these axles not need a new seal going into the transmission?
Nice! Found a nice pair at the junkyard, now I can go grab them
I am assuming this procedure works either left or right (drivers or passenger side) I know the passenger side outboard is shot completely, so I got both and replacing. THANK YOU for all the info and details.
Just remove the lower ball joint nut and the lower dog bone bolt makes it easier to push down the lower control arm
Thanks, I’m doing one today.
I guess you tried to leave the axle end in the trans to prevent oil leaking ?..
My 2002 Legacy has a splined shaft that goes into the trans, rather than the female and roll pin setup. Was this part of the mid year change that makes brakes nigh impossible to match up?
It would be great if you could shade the overhead lights because the cause the camera to close the aperture down so it is hard to see the details. Thanks
looks like 02 was the last year for the pin. my 03, has no roll pin
I'm a little confused. When you removed the Axle it had a Male end on the Transmission side..
When you put the new one in it had the Female end like it should, was this done on 2 different cars ?
Great Video though. I prefer to take the lower Ball joint apart as well. On other videos, they take it apart at the strut.. To Me this is better !!
The punch he hits in the video removes the pin in there and that is a stub that is placed onto the new axel and installed with a new pin.
@@justzayit5082 Why wouldn't he put the stub in the new axle before he installs it instead of putting the pin in while it's on the car?
@@jimmann7237 getting that pin out when the axle is off is a pain in the ass and he can also put the new pin in while outside as well. He just needs to make sure it doesnt fall out when its installed outside of the car
You're the best thanks alot man
Spline shaft doesn't want to come out of hub beat on it, what up
Excellent video
Solid 👊 Thanks
Awesome mix vol 1
Why is the passanger side so much worse with getting the pin out
You sure that car is driving right after 3 minutes 20 seconds in? I think you forgot to leave something with the car
I wish I knew what you were talking about but there's no sound lmfao
Btw i hate this car. My first and only Subaru. This car has been a pain fr the past 3 days
This was ganster
