Hey there buddy, great question. You can approach the Gumbi in both of these ways the sideways cartwheel is more of a ‘Mexican Cartwheel’ which is very similar. There should be tutorials covering this out there. For me however, I prefer to think of it as a bad side/leg cathwheel where you drag & kick your kicking leg behind you through an arch shape. At the point to complete the Gumbi you reach slightly across diagonally with one hand and reach back with the other, turning through a bridge as you go over. So to answer your question. Both are viable but by the sounds of what your going for thinking of it going through bridge/arch will yield a nicer shape in the end. I hope that answered your question.
