  • Episode One - Engine Vein
We take a 320 mile roadtrip to see some amazing copper mines at Alderly Edge, Macclesfield. The mines are looked after by the Derbyshire Caving Club which hosted this open weekend to show the public around on a guided tour and also granted us their kind permission to free roam their mines for the weekend, which we are very thankful.
Engine Vein mine was worked around 1755, the open work pit is now capped with a concrete slab, but access it through a locked door into the adit and into the mine.
A lot more to come from this series, this is only the start.
Many thanks to the Derbyshire Caving Club for allowing us access to these amazing mines and being such great hosts!

Hi, Cornish. Thanks for the video. This brings back lots of good memories for me. Until three years ago, I lived in Alderley Edge, and as a long-time member of the Derbyshire Caving Club, and also the Parys Underground Group, I was a guide on the two Alderley mines open-days in April and September. I spent many years up there helping to explore, hand-dig, haul, cart and hoist thousands of tonnes of back-filled rocks and sand out of those tunnels, shafts and stopes. And at the same time helping to build rail tracks, ore carts and the many steel bridges, ladders and stairways that you traversed on your way through Engine Vein. That beautiful hand-picked tunnel led to the Roman shaft where, years ago, one of my mates discovered a jar of Roman coins which are now preserved in Manchester History Museum. Hence the name 'Roman' shaft. As a matter of interest, amongst dozens of smaller ones there are also two other 'main' mines on Alderley Edge. 'Wood Mine' and the cavernous 'West Mine'. We didn't take visitors on that final 'out' section of the Hough level, where you filmed, it was too dangerous. But I hope you enjoyed your wobbly canoe trip. Is the corner bath-tub and tractor inner-tube still there ? Great fun unless, that is, you just happen to fall in the deep, cold, wet, water. I now live down here in Cornwall, near Bissoe, looking across the fields to the Mount Wellington and Wheal Jane mines as I type this. Again, thanks for your video and looking forward to Part II. frank.

Hi Frank, thank you for your kind words. The guys up there are top lads, really nice bunch, we joined in with the camp fire sing-song too, what a great way to finish the day! Really enjoyed exploring the mines, we done Wood mine (coming up in next video) and West mine (hardly touched the surface of that mine, it really is huge, need some serious lighting to video those massive caverns) Yes, the bathtubs are there still, that was a option, but we went for the canoe, we done it last year too, was just as amazing and so much fun. We heard about the roman coins when we were there, it's a lovely little level that, some nice ones very similar in West mine too.

@@CornishMineExplorer Hi, Cornish. Glad you enjoyed your trip. As you say, the lads up there are 'Top Blokes'.
As a matter of interest, I've still got all my underground 'gear' and BCRA insurance. Could I possibly accompany you and your team when you next go on a mine exploration, down here in Cornwall ? Cheers, frank.

@@CornishMineExplorer Hi, Cornish. Sorry for the delay in responding to you. Sadly I don't have a facebook account, but my son does. I'll make contact with you, through his account, in the next couple of days.

I was bought up in this area, but as a child, completely unaware of the mines. Very pretty mine, lots of strata in there.

Might go back up again in September, not sure yet, but it's a good exploring and great bunch of guys up there in the DCC.

"Oh solo mio!" Impressive, esp the area lines w/sedimentary striation - brings to mind Native sand painting. DCC's maintenance of Engine Vein is commendable, awa their hospitality toward fellow explorers.

Excellent video, looking forward to more! I'm starting to look at rehabbing a mine here in New Mexico, maybe work it for specimens. I can relate to what these guys did to get this one safe for tours.

Just setting up the lights took a good few hours, one heck of a job the guys present and past done of getting that mine people friendly.
