  • In this video we explore an abandoned copper mine. We have an underground adventure. There are three abandoned copper mines at Alderley edge in Cheshire UK. This is the largest of the three mines, 'West Mine'. We were taken around on a tour of the mine by the Derbyshire Caving Club. This underground urbex is an underground adventure. The Mines were a busy industrial hub in Cheshire in the Victorian era and into the Edwardian era. We see old mining relics and the geology of Underground Cheshire . This is not quite an urbex urban explore but it comes near. Copper Mining in The Alderley Edge Cheshire area has gone on since neolithic times. So join me Martin Zero on this explore of an old Mine.

The acetylene lamp early in the video made me feel my age. Back in the 80s I went caving in the Stoney Middleton area with two lads who were with the local cave rescue team and we were given carbide head lamps. At one point I was invited to lead the route through a narrow(ish) passage but one of the buggers had got ahead of me through a side shaft and blew my lamp out. Very funny but the end of my caving career. Brilliant piece again, Martin, and thanks for lighting the darkness for 28 minutes in these gloomy times.

1959 I was 11 years old then, still had the events of early 60s to come, Castro, and the Mutually Assured Destruction following the Missiles in Cuba crisis, didn’t enjoy that the date we all thought the missiles where on they way, interesting was school way back then.
Another interesting vid Martin always something new from the Industrial Heritage of the North West.
What it is an entertainment today was a way of life for the miners of the 1800s. Can’t imagine earning ones crust darn that or any other Pit. Keep up the good work in these times of lockdown anything on You Tube is becoming worth its weight in gold.

Blimey Martin I felt really queasy watching that, how on earth did folk work those mines the sign about hell is right. I just can't imagine how awful and dangerous it must have been. All credit to the Derbyshire cc for rescuing it, and to you for braving it. Phew!

2018 we did a Midwest caving tour here in the US. Not proper caving, all set up for walking tours but still really gorgeous features. Mammoth caves, Horse, Lost, Blanchard, its hot and humid in the summers but the caves are fresh and delightfully cool. Blessed if I recall the name of the last one, a driving tour, but the original explorers were a crew of local ladies and they wrote their names with the dates in candle soot on the wall. Elsewhere was a dance floor built for Prohibition. Terrifically interesting.

Hi Martin, wow although a dangerous place to be it really does have some very beautiful features, that area that floods leaving that blue copper like stain is absolutely gorgeous. A very cool adventure and one I suspect you will never want to forget. We are living through some very strange and uncertain times at the moment but eventually it will get better, please stay safe and stay well, one thing I have learned is that a doctor is successfully treating patients with high strength Vitamin C, I take 1000mg a day and have done so for over 6 months as I have a low immune system which does scare me as I have been told by the NHS that I am at very high risk of becoming seriously ill if I catch this virus as I have both Asthma & COPD so I have been staying in for the last week or so. Take care Martin, much love. 💙xx

For local interest, at some point (don't know when) copper extracted from the ore from Alderley Edge was smelted in Macclesfield in the area around the present Windmill Park. There is a Copper Street alongside and, on nearby Byrons Lane, there is a wall with coping slabs made of slag from the copper smelters. These can be seen as you approach the Old King's Head, on the left hand side of Byrons Lane. Incidentally, I live on Byrons Lane! Another local fact is that at one time, Charles Roe ran the copper mines, and also had an interest in the enormous copper workings in Parys Mountain on Anglesea.

My Dad had a Carbide lamp on his bike in Norway just after the war, he used to tell us you could smell bicycles with carbide lamps coming. The Weirdstone scared me to death when I was a kid. Especially the bit where they all had to go through a very small siphon under water not knowing whether they would get out the other end.

Thanks for that Martin, all three caves have been really interesting. As a kid in the mid to late 60's, my mates and I would often get the train from Piccadilly to Alderley Edge to explore the woods, we'd clamber about in a few of the caves too, but had no idea caves like this existed under our feet. BTW....1959 isn't 'that' long ago for me, I was four back then.

From now on we should call you Axel Lidenbrock LOL. I think those newspapers were the ones I dropped down the shaft rather than deliver them. I have an old motorcycle acetylene lamp, my dad used to tell me how they would flare up if you drove or rode over potholes and the water would gush over the carbide creating a flood of acetylene in the lamp. It was known that acetylene car lamps would occasionally explode driving on rough roads.

Awesome. Reminding me of the times I have had tours around the Silica mines at Pontneddfechan around Dinas Rock. Martin your videos are always excellent and enjoyable to watch. Thank you for referencing the music in the description. I will have to look it up.

What an immense cave system! love Brad's colorful outfit haha and i would have liked to have seen one of those carbide lamps lit in the dark of the mine!

Yeah unfortunately i only saw the lamp after we had left, would have been interesting to see how much light it gave off

Brilliant tour explore Martin i did some at speedwell last month. It scares me not knowing what's around the corner, tight spaces and bottomless drops. Well done.

I know you're not quite comfortable with heights Martin and also the depths. I share your trepidation. Thanks for taking us so far down with you, there's no way I could attempt that. I did visit some amazing caves , The Frasassi Caves , in central Italy last year, lots of stalactites and stalagmites. No squeezing through small gaps though like the toilet seat, what a sight seeing your legs dangling through. Hope you stay safe through this virus crisis and we'll wait for the videos.
