I have a theory that helmets and the lack thereof in historical battlefield dramas, are the equivalent of The Great Hairpin Shortage in historical romances. Random extras who don't get names or lines and we're not supposed to care about? Hair pinned up/head protected. Important, high-status, main characters? Hair loose, helmet nowhere to be seen. Because apparently we wouldn't find them *relatable* otherwise . . .
Or identify them in a lineup--and the production lacks the ingenuity and creativity to find ways to make them remarkable while in period-accurate costume.
@@azteclady I've been saying that they can simply put crests on helmets in different styles and colors, and we'll know who it is. Or just paint them different colors. People liked colors back then, like they do now!
@@eldorados_lost_searcher People certainly painted helmets and armor in the later part of the medieval age. It certainly wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility for it to have been done in the early medieval period.
Interesting idea and I believe you are on to something there: the viewer needs to see the face all the time to relate to the acting. I have been in some theater productions and one of the first things i learned is always position yourself so that the audience sees your face, no matter if it makes sense. That seems to be a rule in movies as well .Finally ive got an answer why in most fantasy productions the main character never wears a helmet and very rarely a shield, even if the source material clearly states otherwise.

woah German tile ovens look cool as anything. that lady's armour, oh my god. clearly they were going for some kind of aesthetic, but how could they ever think leaving half the arms covered in bright fabric would ever work?!
Yea... But honestly... Eowyn in Lord of the Rings looked awesome in regular mail. No shapeware armor, no odd sexy neckline, just what everyone else is wearing... Seriously, if one would just grab the Rohirrhim armor leave out the scale and plate bits one would have more realistic vikings than what Netflix did here xD
What is it about this pervasive idea in Hollywood that historical costumes have to be "sexy"? Because these costume departments never really succeed, do they? It's always some daft leather vest that looks totally useless and we KNOW it looks useless. That pic of Edmund Ironside with the scraps of chainmail over a silk shirt is a great example. Anybody can look at it and go, "hey what are those 10cm squares of chainmail for?" and "that shirt's gonna get ripped". I really wish there was a greater push in historical drama towards better costumes, because I guarantee they could've done something really badass AND historically accurate!

I strongly believe that Norsemen in their original outfits looked exceedingly cool and sexy!
@ Absolutely! Honestly, get a bunch of hot Scandinavians together and you could make them wear literally anything and they'd still be hot Scandinavians
As someone who has watched Vinland Saga which had TONS of costume research (not sure about the local chad Askeladd tho), yes indeed they still look hella good looking in their wear despite the lack of "sexified" Hollywood outfits.
All vikings really wore for armor were gambesons and chainmail. Both of which look plain. Personally, I think the leather looks way better, even if it's inaccurate.
Viking as an occupation, or even an idle hobby, doesn't really have flair, does it? "Yeah mom, the lads and I are gonna hang out today. No, we're not just gonna screw around. We might sail over to England and viking around a bit, give the island a good once over, see what we can find, and then be home. Don't wait up, we might be gone a few weeks."
So we were going to go viking around for a bit but then this group of older geats invited us to this wicked awesome trade hub down in Ukraine! Had a couple of drinks, one thing lead to another, and so that's how I wound up buying a roll of silk and a cask of wine from some Romans. But we got it at a good deal, they apparently knew these guys from their days in the Varangian guard and they hooked us up! Plus I earned all of it back with some extra after betting on this chariot race down in their city. Anyway that's why I'm like 3 weeks late...
That sounds like a great premise for a show; just some random vikingrs just go raiding around as a hobby, dicking around and they end up getting dragged into the main plot as a result of their hobby; hell, perhaps make it an edutainment show where these guys are messing around in different parts of the early medieval world and they bounce around between different trade cities and whatnot
Why not though? Piracy was an "occupation" (if we could call it that) and people have no trouble comprehending what it means or making it look cool. Viking is the medieval equivalent of piracy.
@@TheWelshViking If I weren't absolutely lazy I certainly would hire you as a consultant for one of my ideas that I've been trying to write down into a cohesive story but can't because I lack the attention span and that I would hope could be turned into an animated series that uses my own original character designs in it! Especially because one of the main factions involved is analogous to the Britons and my knowledge of medieval Wales is primarily a mishmash of information rabbit holes...
As far as I know being a historical consultant for TV, games and movie productions can be very frustrating. You can tell them how stuff was, but you have no actual say about the production itself. Their idea of entertainment will always go before any historical accuracy.
Its a pitty because there is real interest for the period out there, and the production team seems to have a reversed Mida's touch. They touch gold and turn it into shit. In the original Vikings series they had the chance to do arcs of 2-3 seasons focused on important historical personalities and key points. But instead they prefered the security of Ragnar's character and painted themselves into a corner creatively when they were left with a cast of glorified extras as main characters. Something that I cannot understand is how they can be so timid creatively trying not to loose their established audience but at the same time they dont bat an eye when it comes to idiotic creative choices that will cause controversy and potentialy cause lower ratings. I had the chance to have a discussion with the producer of a medieval period drama that aired 5 years ago in Netflix. I wont name it but you can probably guess it. The series was really bad, name the hollywood historical inaccuracy trope and it had it in. The craziest thing was that the producer was actually a very knowledgeable person when it came to medieval history. Since that producer was very active in the field, I asked him if he would be willing to create/pitch a historical drama based on the Eastern Roman Empire, since its an untaped source of immense historical wealth and really intriguing stories. I mean GoT would look like a Sunday school play compared the actual byzantine game of thrones. His answer was that personally he would like it alot, but professionaly he would never try to create a series focused on Byzantium, because the greater audience knows little if anything at all about it and no production company would risk it.
I wonder if that producer knows how the historical periods that do get shows made about them got well-known enough to have shows made It does my head in that "build it and they will come" is such a logical idea, just make a Byzantine show that's *good* and people will watch it, and production companies refuse to do it
@@DoinItforNewCommTech The people that green light these projects, usually dont want to risk. They prefer to repeat a successful recipe again and again because they underestimate the audience (many times with good reason). If the project fails they have less explaining to do comparing to a ''high risk'' one. They consider the Eastern Roman Empire as something unknown and possibly less relatable for northern european and american audiences. The insanity kicks in when they disregard themes that could exchange their token diversisty quotas for ACTUAL ethnic and cultural diversity because Constantinople was a metropolis with over a million inhabitants, a real cosmopolitan centre when London was a bunch of roman ruins and mudhuts. But I guess no... we ll just make Jarl Haakon a black woman and everything will be fine lol
@@karinland8533 or how rational they are. There is a lot of money doing a show, so they have to be sure the shows bring in revenue. Most shows don't bring in money when they move away from the tried and true recipies. For every Game of Thrones we have a Firefly, or a Heroes.
I was an extra on valhalla ... The scene with the single shield wall on the bridge was relayed to us as a trap for the saxons ... Engaging their army at the wrong end of the bridge before it was destroyed. ....not sure if that makes it better. But it was intentional
I’d really love to see a show that tells a story showing Norse pagans and Christian’s living amongst each other and coexisting. But I guess that would be “boring” to people.

Many thanks Jimmy for enduring this farrago so we won't have to. It's so sad that a great story has been not only been ignored but literally been besmirched.
I rarely watch "Viking " films either cinema or television, they are all too annoying. Hated Vikings, the hairstyles, armour are bad enough but the fact that the sagas and historical data is available the stories could have been so much better. Think what they could have done with Njal's saga or Egil's saga or any of the others. So sad what needs doing is to hire historical reenacters at least then the costumes would be correct, it's done all the time in the US for American Civil War films
I can't stand watching "Viking" things either. They always Hollywoodise either by simplifying the story to barely recognisable or they "other" the "bad guys" and go all wierd with magic and mysticism until it is basically modern fantasy.
There is always a sketch comedy show on tv in Iceland on new years eve. This last one had a sketch where we had sold the rights to Njáls saga to Disney and they Americanized it. It was horrifyingly bad and funny bc this is how they butcher history way too often
@@Aurora2097 I'm Welsh-Cornish, basically the original Britons and no one deals with the harrowing we took after the Saxons came, I recently read that those of us they didn't kill they sold off the island . Many of us left and settled in France and Spain, Armorica ,Galicia and Brittany being some of the places we sought out for refuge. Considering that what was our island all the way to Pictland was taken by Saxon pirates at least you can say that Vikings may not have been as genocidal as they. Too right Celts are treated like crap. Our fights against the Romans alone of much more scrutiny.

Netflix hardly ever releases a series that is somewhat near history. I've seen so much crap already in the story lines nevermind the costumes and locations.
'Aethelred the genocidal and incompetent' is probably more accurate, but a) doesn't contain a clever pun in Old English, and b) doesn't the same ring to it. I was taught in primary school that the nursery rhyme 'London bridge is falling down' referred to Vikings pulling it down during an attack on the city. I guess it's probably a myth, but it's a fairly widespread one, and most likely why the TV show felt the need to include it.
One of the first scenes in the old ‘Vikings’ movie, with Ernest Borgnine as Ragnar had him in a helmet similar to this one you keep showing - how is a movie from the 50’s/ 60’s (icr) able to show this accuracy, & a massive budgeted Netflix series, with all the years of archaeological information we’ve gained since then, not?
I have a mini skirt with more studs on it than that armor which would probably also be better when worn into battle than that obviously faux leather crap (not that faux leather is always crap but 1. it didn't exist the way we know it at the time and 2. I would sooner trust any other fabric over extruded plastic if my life depended on it because that stuff does not hold up to any beating what so ever). I don't know why production teams refuse to actually put any effort in when it comes to actual historical time periods when they could very easily just hire a bunch of college students who would've been doing the research anyway and give them college credit for it so the production team doesn't have to actually spend any more money, the students get practical experience in their field of study, and the costumes become more accurate and way less distracting. I know when I was in college I would've killed for that opportunity because I was majoring in costume design with an emphasis on historical dress and a job like that would've probably stopped me from dropping out or at least given me the connections I would've needed to have an actual career after I dropped out. It's not rocket science so I genuinely cannot figure out why productions don't take advantage of that.
Love this, your critique is awesome ❗️ Rhinestone cowboy, ha!!🤠 I agree with everyone that we have enough knowledge to do a better job of telling stories and history, uh. Feel better Jimmy, love when you’re grumpy❣️
Not gonna lie, slightly disappointed to discover "Oh p_ss and _sses" wasn't your new nickname for us. But I was eating soup while watching and did a genuine spit take at "German tile oven" so it's all good. :D
I love hearing Jimmy review things, just fantastic. With how much interest exists for the period you really think people would do better. These shows would last longer and be watched more if they actually payed attention to history, evidence that's out there. Instead they just do whatever they want. Maybe one day we'll get a good show.
Last year a friend asked me to give the original Vikings show a try. Oh, did I try. I managed to get theough five episodes before I just couldn't take it anymore. I just couldn't get immersed into the world. The costumes were atrocious, everyone was dirty and everything was just gray. So yeah, this one gets a hard pass from me. Get well soon, lad
I can feel you there... The worst thing is that when people hear you are reenacting, they believe you must love that show. And when you tell them your real opinion they hate you.
To be fair, if you can suspend your disbelief, Vikings season 1 and the first half of season 2 is good television. And the hairstyles are iconic. (Even though they are definitely not historically accurate.)
We are a professional army we shall line up neatly, and then leave our nice high walls and randomly charge at an enemy. Our prince will be on a horse for some reason, unable to move because he's surrounded by infantry but a much bigger target
I don't know enough about clothing and garments throughout history to notice small details or to not enjoy a show/movie if it isn't super accurate. What I find problematic though is, when studios pretend to do a historically accurate depiction and it's obiously not. It's like I (as a musician) would be asked to play Bach at a wedding and then I show up playing a jazz improvisation of the piece, because it's less effort than learning the whole thing. It's definitely not what I was asked for and people would tell me, that I didn't do my job right 😅
I'm so glad to see you more lively again and back to your old sarcastic self that we all love ❤ And thanks for another reason not to be sad about my lack of Netflix 😂
So if Vikings all wore helmets, how come so few survive? It could be that the metal was reused, but then it seems more helmets survive from earlier periods (i.e. Vendel, but also ancient Roman, Greek etc.), so that's odd.
Aethelraed really was Unraed, always ready with a bad idea, not unlike the makers of Vikings:Valhalla - they could have done with some genuine counsel or even just a little bit of sage advice.
I have a historical migraine after watching this. *WHY* is it so hard to achieve at least a minimum of historical accuracy in costuming and the writing? *headdesk times five million* British history is a love of mine, so I'd kind of like to destroy all master copies of the show now.
Recommendation from the fetish community: If all you can afford at the moment is cheap leather or pleather, you’re better off just showing more of your own skin at events, until you save up for quality. Not sure that applies to heading into battle, but those pleather van seats look about as protective as fabric, and far grosser to sweat in.
As always, excellent and detailed review and very entertaining as well. How many Pagans versus Christians movies must we be tortured with. Certainly there were other socio-political conflicts in the 11th Century. All human conflicts are likely to have multiple issues affecting the lives of every member of every ethnic/racial/religious group or sect in every geographic area or region. I agree 100% that Christians versus Pagans is a cheap and lazy way to base a script upon. My ancestors were Alsatians with Scandinavian DNA as well as Western European DNA. Vikings describe what certain groups of people did and it’s not who they were. There were Danes, Jutes, Saxons, Frisians, Norwegians, and others but they COULD have been Vikings or not. Many were mostly farming peoples who adapted farm tools for use when they went on a Viking raid. This is a bit of an oversimplification and it was a bit more complicated than that. The big complaint is that Movie Makers will put budget above truth and accuracy and settle for crappy screenplays regardless of his bad and historically inaccurate they are. It’s Scholars like Jimmy who will call to task poor Movie plots, characters, costuming, tactics, weaponry, etc until they get get it right. They should hire a true knowledgeable Consultant (Like Scholar Jimmy) to make things right. Thanks Jimmy.
There doesn’t even seem to have been any significant hatred between Christians and pagans from the 10th century onwards anyway. Even Frankish Christians didn’t regard viking pagans with all that much hostility. *Northemn gave and took hostages, made treaties and swore oaths 'according to their fashion.' The Franks could make deals with them. Northmen were pagan, but there is no evidence that the Franks considered them militantly so, or attributed their activities to religious fervour. On the contrary, monastic authors sometimes depicted northmen showing reverence for the saints.*
the shields that most of the Saxon warriors have are literally just Roman scutum (convex rectangular shields) with the bottom two corners rounded off to make them superficially resemble kite shields and/or large heater shields. Yeesh
It's almost as if the "stylist" was really late to the party & just grabbed whatever was handy & through it all together. Diolch for the laughs Jimmy & hope you're not getting a cold 👍❤️
Oh no! I couldn't finish watching History Channel's Vikings because of how corny it was, and now this looks like another of the same. The straw that broke the camel's back as I watched Vikings was when all the leads, mighty jarls, clashed in France. And Ragnar leaps into battle, out of formation, wielding a one-handed axe, without a helm, without a shield, and without mail. This was the big climactic battle, that they had all the time in the world to prepare for. And the characters who are supposed to be powerful warlords go in solo, with one little axe apiece.
That series, while getting people interested in the history of Northmen, was shit. As far as fighting without armour, well, how did that work out for Harald Hardrada and his people.
@@jameswilliams3241 Well... a lack of armor and being taken by surprise... Plus I wouldn't say it got people interested in the history of the Northmen, it just got them interested in the idea of the northmen in the victorian sense of the "noble savage". I can say for me though my interest came with the D'Aulaires book of Norse Myths on top of knowing of my Mom's scandinavian ancestry. Which got me from reading about how Thor nearly wrestled old age itself to a draw to buying my first mjolnir pendant to sewing my own klappenrock entirely by hand.
@@CollinMcLean I have to agree with you. They're amazing! I've wanted a tile oven for years
The leather doesn’t even look sexy
Viking as an occupation, or even an idle hobby, doesn't really have flair, does it? "Yeah mom, the lads and I are gonna hang out today. No, we're not just gonna screw around. We might sail over to England and viking around a bit, give the island a good once over, see what we can find, and then be home. Don't wait up, we might be gone a few weeks."
Don't forget your cloak dearie! It's so rainy over there it can't be healthy!
I dunno man, I love having a good vike
Hope you’re a historical consultant on a show one day Jimmy. At least we’d know it would be good
❤❤❤
It’s funny when an awesome Japanese anime like Vinland Saga is more historically accurate than an actual live action show on Vikings
That was originally created by a tv channel that calls itself “history”. A name that has become sarcastic at this point.
I wonder if that producer knows how the historical periods that do get shows made about them got well-known enough to have shows made
It does my head in that "build it and they will come" is such a logical idea, just make a Byzantine show that's *good* and people will watch it, and production companies refuse to do it
@@DoinItforNewCommTech The people that green light these projects, usually dont want to risk.
Shows how stupid production companies are...
@@karinland8533 or how rational they are. There is a lot of money doing a show, so they have to be sure the shows bring in revenue. Most shows don't bring in money when they move away from the tried and true recipies. For every Game of Thrones we have a Firefly, or a Heroes.
@@Kramplarv the show Vikings Valhalla will flop .
I adore watching knowledgeable people year lazy production apart. Hope you feel better!
I was an extra on valhalla ... The scene with the single shield wall on the bridge was relayed to us as a trap for the saxons ... Engaging their army at the wrong end of the bridge before it was destroyed.
....not sure if that makes it better. But it was intentional
thats soldiering
I believe the word you were looking for that armour was simply "Crap".
Ah! Thankyoo
Hope you're feeling better soon! I lost it at German tile oven and loved the leather daddies bit.
the tile oven armour and the 'actual leather daddies wouldn't wear this!' cracked me up so much
Why does the wood on the shields look like it came straight out of a bog?
I’d really love to see a show that tells a story showing Norse pagans and Christian’s living amongst each other and coexisting. But I guess that would be “boring” to people.
First series came close. Then promptly abandoned it
Jimmy, you crack me up!!! Don't worry about bad sound or lighting....we love YOU!
The guy at 4:28 looks like he’s wearing a black, cable knit sweater while his friend, German Tile Oven Man, looks like he’s wearing a garment inspired by a granny square blanket pattern that my mom crocheted in the 80s.
My thoughts exactly on Woolly Pully Man! (I'm sure I had one just like it once...)
As a medievalist with a history in population genetics and who works part time at a kink club, this is the confluence of so many of my interests! I don't want to kink shame but, I wouldn't let anybody wearing that in the club. I saw the screenshot and knew just how terrible it was going to be but, then we get the shot of the lady in that Skyrim armor and I lost it. I expect there to be some historical inaccuracies to make a compelling story but, come on! Also, the "Viking DNA" thing has always infuriated me. Might as well say you have mechanic DNA.
Many thanks Jimmy for enduring this farrago so we won't have to. It's so sad that a great story has been not only been ignored but literally been besmirched.
I remember your review of The Northman, for some reason I thought this was the same thing at first and my soul was crushed.
And they'd probably work for much cheaper than all those extras. They have the costumes and equipment at the ready.
Whatever should i say? I am into the celts and no historic culture gets treated as bad in films or anywhere as they do!
German tile oven cracked me up. I can imagine the notes on those costumes. "Leather... things? Rivets and stuff to make it look rough and maaanly" Gosh, Netflix, if you want to go sexy at least go all the way.
The guy with the beard looks like he's wearing armor made of granny squares 🤣 I have a stash of squares I haven't decided what to do with, maybe I should just whip up a Vikings Colon Valhalla cosplay 🤔🤣
And the saxons' shields remind me of prince Philip's shield in Sleeping Beauty. So if they were going for Disney's version of the 1300's sprinkled with people dressed in leather so cheap it looks like garbage bags, I'd say they nailed it 👌
Oh and I almost forgot that wonderful rendition of a dragon rider armor for a How to Train Your Dragon OC, truly spectacular 😘👌
Oh, thank you. I feel your pain but I also needed a good laugh today, and you've supplied it.
I saw Prince Edmund. I wondered where Peter, Susan and Lucy were.
4:29 i cant believe you dont even know what that is hes wearing. its clearly a tea cozy, an efficient Viking piece of armour
Oh of course it is!
Never let archeological facts get in the way of a television show. Netflix and leather daddys seem to be pandering to the idiots. This is why I love your channel. Take care love ya!
Netflix hardly ever releases a series that is somewhat near history. I've seen so much crap already in the story lines nevermind the costumes and locations.
i really enjoyed it, for what it was.
Also, I would buy literally any merch that you emblazon with the axiom "no, Snorri Sturleson doesn't count as evidence" 😂 🤣
I can’t help but imagine the one clip R Lee Ermie going “WHAT! WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!” At every screenshot from this show
I think that guy was wearing Nilfgaardian armor very common in the Viking age i believe
But it's the opposite! Yes. His name is punny but inaccurate!
@@TheWelshViking I learned his nickname had to do with him having a lot of advisors, and that they were total shit..

Hope you can get some rest and feel better soon! Winter sucks.
Omg! I feel seen, lol!
The leather gear! All I could think was a car salesman pushing genuine Naugahyde and my partner at 7 asking him, what’s a Nauga?!
I recently found your channel and I really love your unique approach to teaching history. Very refreshing, Thank you.
How kind of you to stop by and share that. Thank you very much!

I tried it once, too. Five minutes was too much for me.
To be fair, if you can suspend your disbelief, Vikings season 1 and the first half of season 2 is good television. And the hairstyles are iconic. (Even though they are definitely not historically accurate.)
You missed a golden opportunity to use the leather daddy Tobias Funke clip from Arrested Development.

well at least they didnt have their trebuches in front of the cavalry
I don't know enough about clothing and garments throughout history to notice small details or to not enjoy a show/movie if it isn't super accurate. What I find problematic though is, when studios pretend to do a historically accurate depiction and it's obiously not.
It's like I (as a musician) would be asked to play Bach at a wedding and then I show up playing a jazz improvisation of the piece, because it's less effort than learning the whole thing. It's definitely not what I was asked for and people would tell me, that I didn't do my job right 😅

So if Vikings all wore helmets, how come so few survive? It could be that the metal was reused, but then it seems more helmets survive from earlier periods (i.e. Vendel, but also ancient Roman, Greek etc.), so that's odd.
German tile ovens have so much personality! I was super delighted by them during my time in Germany a few years back.
The bridge over the Thames looks very much like the Thames barrier of today!
I was hoping you would react to this! Nice.
Aethelraed really was Unraed, always ready with a bad idea, not unlike the makers of Vikings:Valhalla - they could have done with some genuine counsel or even just a little bit of sage advice.

Ah that wellknown 'viking' garment the Tēæ-Shïrta. The upholstery fabric is strong with this production.
I have a historical migraine after watching this. *WHY* is it so hard to achieve at least a minimum of historical accuracy in costuming and the writing? *headdesk times five million* British history is a love of mine, so I'd kind of like to destroy all master copies of the show now.
It's just a Netflix show.
@@Wayzor_ But it's "just" teaching people bad history. Which is why it should make the effort to achieve at least a minimum of historical accuracy.
And, with a single phrase, Jimmy spawns a new sub-genre of fanfic.

Born in the USA, family has lived in the USA since the mid 19th century. My dad's side of the family is Celtic, primarily Gaelic (as if my last name wasn't a dead giveaway) with some Welsh which is why they made my middle name Rhys! (It's kind of fun watching people try to pronounce it)
My mom was from an incredibly small town in the Midwest that was originally settled by immigrants from Sweden and Germany around the middle of 19th century. And while I was by far more immersed in medieval norse culture than anyone else in my family the locals preserved a good amount of their Scandinavian heritage. Hel, my Grandmother was even taught how to make her own Lutefisk. She didn't like the stuff at all but my Grandpa had loved it after he accidentally ate some when meeting her parents.
The whole point of a series like Vikings is for entertainment purposes, not historical accuracy. People would normally read a book or watch a documentary for that.

i have also wondered about those weird holey sweater thingies and pondered that maybe it is supposed to an artistic representation of sprang weaving? All that leather armor? Sure maybe the occasional leather vest (Not armor, an article of clothing that so happens to be made from leather) worn by an individual of significant standing but most of that stuff looks like it was crafted from remnants available at a craft store.
The wolf skin? I could see maybe a cut of an animal pelt being worn as an accessory to convey and individuals prowess as a warrior. Especially if they were a member of a nobleman's Hird as berserkers allegedly were. But that is essentially a werewolf costume?
I believe it was worn during the attack on the Capitol.
