I don't think a cougar would generally attack something of a good size and aware of it and looking to kill it. That being said, there are instances of cougars attacking people where there are two people. In an open savanna, I think the hyena would win, since the element of surprise does not seem to be a big factor for the hyena. In a dense forest, the cougar, like a leopard, would have an incredible element of surprise.

In my personal opinion I truly believe the spotted hyena would defeat a cougar one on one. Not just because of their bite force but because spotted hyenas face bigger and more dangerous prey in their natural habitat. As well as they face off with lions and leopards.
Everyone in the comments have this wrong;...a Hyena matriarch isn`t remotely afraid of a Lioness and won`t hesitate to confront one in competition for food. Several years ago there was a video on YT of two male Lions attacking a Hyena; using it`s incredible bite the Hyena made BOTH Lions back off. It would only take one bite from a Hyena to make a Cougar realize it would come off second best in a full fight. Also, the skin of a hyena is incredibly tough and withstand enormous attacks.
My guy awesome vid. But like many infos on animals that were misinformed. The lions bite force is about a 1000 psi. Just saying from what I research and read there was an error on the lions bite force. They tested it on an adolescent. I’m sure an adults bite is more stronger.
Good one. I'm thinking hyena. Cats have relatively small lungs and lack stamina. If the battle doesn't end quick, the cats done. Hyena will get shredded but will win.

Just like the Leopard the cougar can kill a Hyena. they "can" but realisticaly speaking the hyena would mostly chase them away, just like the hyena normally does vs the leopard.
Hyena and leopards fight all the time, I've seen them fight on Animal Planet. Leopards usually run from hyenas because they're usually outnumbered, but when it's 1v1, leopards wax them! Far too fast, the hyena gets overwhelmed and runs away. And cougars get bigger than leopards, so I'm betting on the cougar! There's videos of cougar fighting off grizzly bears! So a hyena shouldn't be a problem.
I live in California. We call Cougars Mountain Lions. They are not to be fucked with. The largest Mountain Lion on record weighted 276 pounds. Think about how dangerous an almost 300 pound cat is. The hyena would have no chance against a Tom in his prime. When a Mountain Lion fights a wolf one on one, the Mountain Lion usual gets a kill in seconds. It never loses to a wolf unless it's a juvenile or injured.

Styles make fights. The fact cougars kill solo while hyenas kill in packs shows the cougar has better forest lethal technique. Hyenas have greater bite strength but the technique of the cougar overrides how hard the hyena bites, especially given the cougar can still inflict a nasty fight ending bite of its own. Imagine Brian Shaw fighting Tyson Fury in a strict boxing match. Brian Shaw may have a better bench press (bite strength) then Fury, but we all know what would happen if they boxed. Styles make fights.
If a cougar wanted to kill a hyena it would stalk it & embed its fangs into its neck & kill it. As would a leopard. In a random encounter, however -- a cougar would have a harder time killing a hyena. On the flip side, if the hyena desired to kill a cougar in that sorta scenario -- it'd never be able to catch it. While a hyena may have the considerably stronger bite force, the cougars fangs give it a more deadly bite. And its speed not only gives it a fighting advantage the hyena doesn't have due to its forelimbs & claws -- its speed also gives it the edge in being able to land the deadly bite to the hyena's neck. Of course, hyenas travel in packs, so it'd be a foolish leopard/cougar that tried to stalk & kill a hyena -- unless it were absolutely sure it were a solitary animal.

No expert here but hyenas are no slouch and while I think in most cases the cougar wins if a hyena can manage one bite it will injure the cougar such to knock it out of the fight and possibly disable it allowing the hyena to go in for the kill. In open ground the hyena can wear the cougar out and if it doesn't have a tree to escape to it would be toast.
Cougar will slap the shite outta the hyena with claws. Hyena will never get in range to land a one dimensional attack. Remember, cougars can hold off grizzly bears. Grizzlies would one shot a hyena
No, not a grizzly. Grizzlies don't have any natural predators or enemies so of course they won't be scared of a cougar, which a grizzly weighs hundreds of pounds heavier and stronger. Grizzlies can also move fast for their size. A paw swipe will dismantle any cougar.
Cougar has the better jab, better footwork, and tighter defense. Hyena takes a better punch, goes to the body better, and will not fade in the later rounds. Might be a draw, which the hyena will probably just laugh off.

Once saw a kid making a fool out of this Hyena by holding a tree bark on his head
Thinking I saw a dog coming to annoy me, I whipped around charged and made a bear grunt, and scared a 150 lb. male cougar, that bolted away at incredible speed. I never saw anything with that acceleration. Why did it run? I didn't know I was going to be a nine lives dinner, and didn't act like prey. Pure ambush, the element of surprise.
You go into all of that detail about their attributes, but you said nothing about the "claw" advantage of the cougar. How could you miss THAT?
One on one? I'm taking the cougar. Cougars, depending on where they live, have to tangle solo with grizzies, black bears, wolves, wolverines, and in South Florida, gatos, crocs, black bears, big feral hogs, and invasive pythons. Hyenas usually have backup.
Lol I don't know any cougar or any kind of mountain lion or whatever is fighting off a grizzly or any other things that you named they usually run off that's the thing about these two animals one of them is scared and the other one doesn't fear anything Plus hyenas literally crush Bones

Hyena easily destroys some wannabe big cat.

no, cougar will bite hyeana's neck and hold and that's it. Hyena too slow, it won't be able to use its bite force advantage
We want spotted hyena vs jaugar highest psi cat vs hyena
Jaguar would give a sole Lion a good fight du e to strength and 1600 psi. Luckily the male Lion has a main.
@tomslick2058 Dude a lioness could beat a jaguar.
Cougar stomps.
Easily.
Definitely not.
Hyenas have survived maulings from lionesses and sometimes even male lions if it's not an all out assault.
They are very durable indeed. They bully leopards constantly even 1 vs 1 they bully leopards 60-40

The cougar hands down. He doesn't need a pack, is more muscular and agile and he has powerful claws.
Brown hyena Vs Striped hyena. please 😊.
Cougar should go for the throught and it's done in 3 seconds
No chance for cougar,,they have almost same weight
McKenzie wolf , Cougar , Hyena

Close tbh,I’d say cougar.
Hyena : You are not a lion. Bring the real lion.
Cougar 4 da win.
As fearsome and deadly challenger as the hyena is i am going 4 the puma.
Its 2 aggressive and fast
But how would a cougar kill a hyena? Hopefully cougar could get a neck bite but that's not easy ,hyenas are muscular and tuff ,lionesses have a hard time with hyenas, hyenas bully leopards
Big cat, no doubt. He is the bad boy!!
In my personal opinion I truly believe the spotted hyena would defeat a cougar one on one. Not just because of their bite force but because spotted hyenas face bigger and more dangerous prey in their natural habitat. As well as they face off with lions and leopards.
Everyone in the comments have this wrong;...a Hyena matriarch isn`t remotely afraid of a Lioness and won`t
hesitate to confront one in competition for food. Several years ago there was a video on YT of two male Lions
attacking a Hyena; using it`s incredible bite the Hyena made BOTH Lions back off. It would only take one
bite from a Hyena to make a Cougar realize it would come off second best in a full fight. Also, the skin of
a hyena is incredibly tough and withstand enormous attacks.
an enjoyable video!
My guy awesome vid. But like many infos on animals that were misinformed. The lions bite force is about a 1000 psi. Just saying from what I research and read there was an error on the lions bite force. They tested it on an adolescent. I’m sure an adults bite is more stronger.
Rottweiler Vs Hyena ?
Rottweiler wouldn't stand a chance.
Hyena would decimate a Rottweiler
Hyenas literally bully leopards off their kill in 1v1 so a hyena wins this everytime.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What a beautiful animal the cougar is...
I hike in a Cougars territory, we co-exist he/she can ghost stalk me I am always armed. We have a agreement lol.
Synthesis of research indicates that Hyena is more related to cat family than the dog family
A cougar isn't strong enough for a spotted hyenas bite force.
🏆Cougar takes the win🏆
I'd go 4 the Cougar because its an adaptable predator, plus it has sharp claws, sharp teeth, and athetics on it's side.
Its capable of making a 40 ft jump covering 20 ft effortlessly 👍
Not 2 mention its designed 2 move through tuff ground like mountains 🗻, valleys,
even the snow ⛄
Despite the fact the hyena has faced more dangerous predators like lions and leopards, the puma is an adaptable predator and the hyena isn't
So is this about being adaptable or winning the fight ? I say hyena wins ,,
@@sidneywilder2731how will hyena defeat a superior predator whos even bigger and actually is good at killing?

Surprised how you never commented on how solitary hyenas routinely scare LEOPARDS off their prey. Based on that, I HAVE to pick the hyena.

@@rawn4203
What was face to face? Learpard and hyenas? And yes leopards run away all the time because hyenas come in numbers and are willing to take loses in attrition. leaprds are more effective hunters . And no typical leopard will not defeat a typical mountain lion. They are a least 25% bigger. Only an idiot would think an apex hyena at 140 lbs is going to be a threat to an apex 250 mountain lion.
@@gwynedd1Leopards run away from single Hyena. Seen it 100X.
So the hyena has to fight like Floyd Mayweather 🤔 gotcha
Styles make fights. The fact cougars kill solo while hyenas kill in packs shows the cougar has better forest lethal technique. Hyenas have greater bite strength but the technique of the cougar overrides how hard the hyena bites, especially given the cougar can still inflict a nasty fight ending bite of its own.
Imagine Brian Shaw fighting Tyson Fury in a strict boxing match.
Brian Shaw may have a better bench press (bite strength) then Fury, but we all know what would happen if they boxed. Styles make fights.
Hyenas punk Lionesses all the time a cougar would be a snack.
Cougar vs. Hyena - the ultimate Atlantic showdown! 🌍🐱🐺 The cougar’s like, ‘I’ve got the speed, agility, and that whole ‘lone wolf’ vibe,’ while the hyena’s thinking, ‘Yeah, but have you seen these jaws? Lions don't actually have a weak bite force, that analysis was done by a lion hater I guess, they have a bite force closer to a 1000 psi, not 500.
He forgot advantages for both. All cats are relatively dumb but the hyena, even if it's in the same branch as cats is much more intelligent than the rest of the big cats. And the hyena will have to work harder if the cougar has a winter coat and fat
Felines don't tend to be really dumb. But it's undeniable that the hyena is smarter. But I would say that the hyena's physical resistance is the greatest guarantee of it persisting in combat here.
@@Vexinsight wild cats are smarter than average dogs. House cats are about as smart as average dogs (dogs vary too much because of inbreeding) . German Shepherds smarter than cats, but there are a lot of dumb untrained dogs that are definitely dumber than average cats. Wolves and coyotes are smarter than dogs, hyeanas are about on the level of those, lions probably on that level too. Those who live in groups tend to be smarter than solitary
@@Vampire_born_in_2006 Generally canids and hyenas relatively exceed many wild cats in intelligence. Unlike wild cats, all canids and hyenas have some capacity for sociability, and know how to exploit it at certain points.
Should of been jaguar vs spotted hyena
No expert here but hyenas are no slouch and while I think in most cases the cougar wins if a hyena can manage one bite it will injure the cougar such to knock it out of the fight and possibly disable it allowing the hyena to go in for the kill. In open ground the hyena can wear the cougar out and if it doesn't have a tree to escape to it would be toast.
people make a big deal about bit force; it is not a big deal if your opponent is a lot bigger with a bigger mouth.
Hyena would win, couger don't have stamina for fighting

It's not even a question, cougar would tear a hyena in half.
You don't know anything about wildlife
a hyena alone would see a cougar and run or its life... hyenas arent programmed to take on big cats alone
They’re only in groups when they fight lion prides, they occasionally drive off leopards and cheetahs from their kills alone.
Cougar will slap the shite outta the hyena with claws. Hyena will never get in range to land a one dimensional attack. Remember, cougars can hold off grizzly bears. Grizzlies would one shot a hyena
They can hold off an “adolescent” black bear or grizzly but full grown… NOPE!
Cougars are not holding off grizzly bears. Lol are you kidding. However, they will hold off a black bear.
No, not a grizzly. Grizzlies don't have any natural predators or enemies so of course they won't be scared of a cougar, which a grizzly weighs hundreds of pounds heavier and stronger. Grizzlies can also move fast for their size. A paw swipe will dismantle any cougar.
A grizzly bear?!
Look up the video “Brown Bear vs Mountain Lion” and see if a cougar can inflict any damage to a grizzly 😂😂

Cougar has the better jab, better footwork, and tighter defense. Hyena takes a better punch, goes to the body better, and will not fade in the later rounds. Might be a draw, which the hyena will probably just laugh off.
