  • In the Spring semester 2017 SCI-Arc hosted an advanced design studio taught by Frank Gehry and Gehry Partners addressing the future of prisons and issues of incarceration. The studio was part of a broader collaborative project between Gehry Partners, Impact Justice, and A New Way of Life. On April 21st Frank Gehry, his co-instructors, and guests reviewed the studio's final models and discussed the students’ proposals to re-imagine what we now refer to as “prison” for a new era.

Its a great discussion to have for architects to affect some kind of positive influence even to the incarcerated. My only input is there ought to be a balance between the idea of punishment, rehabilitation and freedom. There should be distinct expressions between these experiences. Prison should not feel like the end of the world nor should it feel like a home away from home or else there would be less motivation to commit crime.

We need four rehabilitation facilities: One for Cluster B which could be a form that is being discussed in this video. One for drug rehab. One for schizoid and homeless population. One open facility for education and therapy.

I think that this issue is a lot more complicated that these people are making it seem. We have a very broken prison system here in the us and I think it takes a lot more than architecture to solve it and a lot more people than architects to solve it.

Prisons so attractive people will be fighting to become residents. ;-) Seriously, I love the concept of healing society through architecture, art and education.

I have a problem with this. i think as architects we like to think about ourselves as savior and that architecture is so powerful and can change the human heart. just imagine one of the serial killers, drug dealers or child rapers living nicely in one of these and waiting to go out again to do their thing. the idea of incarceration of criminals is not only to protect the public but also as a way to punish, to stripe certain rights/ freedom in order to or in the hope of causing regret/remorse, therefore change of heart. i honestly don't see how these nice "resort type" of environment will accomplish that. ask the victim's family to be on the design critique panel, they are the one with right to design these prisons. They will tell you what is the reality of losing someone they love by these crimes....

Don't worry, most prisons in the US are for-profit so the incarcerated are almost certainly will be put through hell no matter how good the scenery is.

You're just populist. Architecture is not about Good and evil. Think and read more.

Everything you said is driven by too much fear and zero knowledge of the topic at hand. It shows that you have yet to discover social sciences. Good luck with that, you clearly need it.

They should look like dungeons and gallows so they are not inviting.

Deprivation of freedom cannot be compensated with a beautiful living environment but at least it gives prisoners of lesser crimes some dignity. Society has a duty to remove from circulation dangerous criminals but after that often they are subjected to gratuitous punishment when loss of freedom is bad enough.

Interesting discussions. However, no one should ever feel comfortable committing a crime.

A criminal should have a housing apt with a terrace and flowers and a view from prison with restaurant. Why don't you include a clothing store and a shopping mall for the criminals who are on good behavior. Please tell us what else is instored for crime victims.
