I brought a 2008 Grand Prix in Dec 2018 with 125k on the motor for $2800 from a friend. I now have 140k and the 3800 engine is running great. I swapped out the plastic coolant elbows with metal ones when I purchased car. I also replaced the rusted power steering lines. I have rust bubble staring to form on the rear fender area, will fix that before winter. Always been a GM/Pontiac fan. My dad always told me that G.M.C. stood for Good Man's Car!!!

Oil under coat the car inner and outer panels doors hood coil towers quarters once you fix the rust . Also drill 1/2. Inch holes in the pillars and rockers get some plastic 1/2 in plugs spray in oil there too and every used car line and internal boxed in unibody frame area . Oil annually wear an approved respirator and don’t get oil on engine exhaust or catalytic converter . If you have any rust on your oil pan sand it and prime and use a good rust paint . The transmission will last if you do an annual service . My 400800 km 2004 Grand Prix gets oil change and filter every 6000 km annually transmission service ,power steering service and brake fluid service .On the transmission it’s easy to suction out 4-5 litres out the dip stick tube and replace use the gm tape approved dextron 6 double check first .By only removing 4-5 litres you won’t shock the transmission like a flush might and the filter should be changed if you have no history of that being done . The suction removal works best if the transmission is warm , I keep my old fluid (don’t keep it if it’s dark or burnt smelling )to use for other lubing needs like putting on rusted nuts and bolts and door pins , linkages . Here’s a thought for you I redid my brakes front pads and hardware were $27.99 Canadian rear $17.99 and I replaced both rear rotors 29.95 each so my brake job cost me $110 Canadian +tax ,try that on a foreign car lolololo .

I also bought a 2008 Grand Prix with 130,000 and right off the bat I was surprised at the power it has. I had a 2006 BMW 330i and it feels the same way, but I do need to remove the 110 mph top out so I can bury the speedometer someday. It has the MONSOON sound system upgrade which sounded great, but I'm putting in Hertz PRO speakers to replace it. I got aftermarket rims that make the car pop, it's very clean inside including carpet. I stay on top of making it shine every day! Whenever someone gets inside they're like "nice car man!" because I also do Ubers in it. But I do also got the rust bubble problem on the back, I painted over it but I'm glad to know it's common. I did learn something new here I had no idea the front seat goes forward like that! I thought the latch took off the back plastic cover so I never touched it. 😂
Anyhow I am very happy with my purchase, I got it for 3,500 which was a steal so you got an even better deal as the car can sell between 5 to 7 according to KBB. I'll be keeping this car for a long time.

Bought one of these cars as a work vehicle to keep mileage down on my daily driver... bought it for $500 with 220K miles. I’ve replaced brakes all the way around, plugs and wires, the RF wheel hub (all either Dorman or ACDELCO parts). Changed the oil regularly and kept the fluids topped off well. Only thing left is the PS pump which leaks a little and for as little as it gives me problems, I’ll just keep an eye on it for now.
I could probably “flip” it for something newer and less mileage, but I’ve grown to like the car a lot and it costs me $30 a month with gas and insurance. I can’t complain.

GM W-body was a good platform. Structurally crash safe. Five years ago I looked for a GP for my son's first car in Western PA. Found it's cousin, a low mileage, loaded, Olds Intrigue GLS, with the same reliability, the 3.5 Shortstar is a beast. The parts you replaced are similar components, I've replaced, primarily due to age. Ours is rust-free; coming from NC. Don't know how your GP escaped rust in PA. Maybe it wasn't still long enough for rust to catch up. 👍🏽On your video & GP

Thanks for the great review! I have an 06 that has 150,000 Kms (I'm from Canada). I think the color is similar to yours. It still has the original stainless steel mufflers. I've had to replace brakes, rotors, coil packs, left front hub, right front ABS wire to harness, spark plugs ( the 3 rear ones were seized), spark plug wires, transmission cooling lines, fuel hoses and a section of fuel line under left passenger door area. Front rotors and pads were replaced twice in 2 years, they squeaked a lot, rear rotor and pads were also replaced but they make a loud humming noise when I back up. Once in a while I get a shudder or hard shift from first to second gear., happens after car is driven for 30 minutes. I experience this once a year. As far a I know, the transmission oil and filter have not been changed. My mechanic advises not to as it may cause further damage. Any thoughts?

Got an 08 base model my wife had since 30k on it, it's about to roll over 200k. Been drove hard over back country roads daily it's been a champ. Only regular maintenance and had catalytic converters clog on it but that's it. This is the 5th or 6th gm 3.8 I've had and every single one has lasted to 300k. Only main complaint is intake gaskets, the stupid plastic coolant elbows and gm fuel pumps going out. Make sure to keep those fuel filters changed!

    • @ZackAngelMusic
      @ZackAngelMusic ปีที่แล้ว

My coolant elbows were changed when I bought my 03 GT. They didn't do the intake gaskets though so I did. They've been doing great. When I put it back on, the right gasket got pinched and started leaking coolant, so I had to readjust. Been good since though.
I'ma look where the fuel filter is so I can change that. I don't let it get under a quart of gas. Hopefully the fuel filter isn't in the fuel pump and is easy to access

If you're considering one of these GM W-body cars, ALWAYS check the rockers FIRST, especially if it's a "rust belt" car. If they're rusted, walk away, no matter how well the car runs or how good it looks on the outside.
I have a 2001 Grand Prix GT sedan that I bought in 2016 with 132k miles for $1700. At the time, I did not realize that these cars had that particular weak point, and the rockers were shedding slabs of swollen, crumbling metal. The plastic ground effects hide a lot of sins on these cars.
The car has been very reliable and has never left me stranded, but rust has taken a major toll on it. I had those plastic coolant elbows replaced soon after purchasing it, but more recently I replaced the transmission cooling lines myself, and I'm currently replacing both rusty, rear, lower trailing arms and brackets (one arm broke from a pothole). I'll continue to fix whatever I have to--within reason because of the rust, and hopefully drive the car (buying another car is not an option right now) until it's no longer safe.
My Grand Prix now has 153k miles on it, and the dark blue paint still looks very good, but I know the car's limitations. If I buy another one of these cars, it's going to be one from a dry climate, and it will get oil-coated ASAP.

My 2005 had 199K on a still very peppy 3.8L engine when I finally had to get rid of it. I bought it in 2015 for 1400 bucks and had it for 2 years as my computer car. Engine and drive train were tip top and it had very very little rust despite being a Maine car. Needed 2000 bucks invested with new tires, ball joints, wheel bearings and a sway bar to get it stickered. I just couldn't sink the money into it so I sold it to a guy who used it for in a derby car at the local race track. Even in 2022, I'd own another one of those cars as a 3rd vehicle if I decide to have another vehicle on hand.

I found an 08 base model garage queen last year with almost no rust and only 48,0000 miles. So far it's been a terrific car, and what's even better is that since the W body had such a long run, there will still be cheap parts for these cars for another 10 years at least. I work at a GM dealership and we routinely see these in the shop with 250,000+ miles still running great. The mileage might not be spectacular, but cast iron engines have almost no problems and they'll probably never make them again.

GM killed Pontiac instead of Buick because Buick is the #1 selling import car in CHINA.
GM sells 70% of their vehicles in CHINA, Yes, 70%!!
Pontiac outsold Buick in the USA, but the sales were tiny compared to Billions of Chinese potential buyers!
The Chinese Emperor in the 1930's used to ride around Beijing in a BUICK, (one of the few Chinese that even owned a car back then) so Buick is looked at as a prestigious vehicle brand in China!

I had it all blacked out with tint and got the windows, headlights and taillights tinted. I live in cincinnati I drove it to and back to Florida twice and got 530 miles on 1 tank of gas, drove to columbus and back numerous times. I got into a really bad accident in it luckily i wasn't hurt I spun out coming around a bend on the highway going 60 then my right rear tire blew and i went over a median and crashed into a guard rail on the other side of the road couldn't gain back control from the tire blow completely totaled crazy thibg is no airbag deploy but luckily i was wearing my seatbelt plus the big body of the car is what I think saved me if i was in a smaller car like a civic I'd pribably be dead. It had 112k on it when it was totaled I only had it for 4 yrs and never had a problem till that tire blow.
