    Please continue to make DT videos as you have been in whatever format you feel comfortable. Your videos are invaluable to DT users in the wild 😊

      As I've mentioned elsewhere, it's about trying to shorten the editing time.

    Hi Bruce! Regarding the script, if I may, I would like to give you a suggestion. Do make a script, but just so you have an idea of what you want to talk about and how. And then have notes or topics about them.
    The idea is that you don't ramble around and instead you have a guide on where to focus your train of thoughs, but with enough freedom to mention other things if they come to mind.
    Glad you are back to more videos!

      Yeah, that's pretty much how the recording of ep 142 went. It was completely accepted, but I didn't read it word for word. It was a guide.

    I've made a few 'how to' you tube videos, some showing dt edits, some Gimp edits and others scuba diving stuff. All had a common method. I go through the process step by step and write one or two lines describing that step. I then make the video with screen capture following my 'script'. It's not actually a script, more a series of prompts. Personally this works for me as I seem to be a good 'ad-libber' and I make the video in a series of small steps that also follow the prompts. That means I can stitch the takes without much editing. They are not very polished but this works for me.
    Your productions are so very polished and professional so I'm not trying to teach my grandmother etc, rather just offering a different approach that might give you some ideas for making your life easier.

    unrestricted mode allowed darktable to use system memory uncapped. this would ultimately lead to swapping. in all my testing it was basically a disaster.

    Thanks once again Bruce. Much appreciated.
    A couple (or 3) thoughts
    1. In my speaking days, I used to use queue cards to help me in my lectures. Kept me on the path, but allowed me to speak naturally. Might be a low tech alternative to a video promter?
    2. I thought you were going into a pitch for volunteer editors, to help geeks clean up their writing efforts. Do you have any contacts who could use this type of assistance?
    3. I thought that the Composite module was a way station on the road to a module equivalent to Adobe's scene cleaner that someone thought would be useful in its own right; if this decision was made at the last minute, it might explain both hte name change and absence of documentation.

    • @audio2u
      @audio2u  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Martin, thanks again.
      Queue cards are pretty much what I've been doing for the last 6 years. But I still seem to wander too far off track, and as stated, end up with too many outtakes to sift through. Hence why I figured scripting the whole thing might work better. And it certainly did cut down on the editing time for THIS episode. I got it recorded and edited in 3 hours, which is a new PB for me! :)
      As for assistant editors, Chris Elston is the guy doing it on his own at the moment. Sadly, they've just (as of July 9) shut down the mailing lists and moved to a Matrix room (kind of like IRC), so I no longer have contact details for him, although he IS on facebook, so I'll see if I can find him there. Other than that, you could log onto the dt page at github and create a feature request offering assistance if you would like to be involved.
      Interesting stuff about the composite module! I have no idea what Scene Cleaner does, but I'll search youtube.

    On the point of recent docs: actually I've never looked at the written documentation. Video tutorials work so much better showcasing the different knobs and sliders.
    The same goes for other software like music editing. Docs and books may be nice but in no way they can compete with video tutorials. They should hire you as their official harbinger!

    Yes, the developers are commonly denied any explanations to the functionality except to place in the code. But that doesn't guarantee good user friendly explanations. As a former developer I know that, and it's a pain when bureaucrats miss the points. If one asks the question, why didn't the DT manual writer start a few weeks earlier? the answer could be that the final functionality and naming - after having been tested - occurred immediately before the planned release of DT 4.8.0 - which leaves the Manual writer no time to tie up loose ends and catch up.

    Darktable manual - I don't even bother looking at it unless I feel like pulling my hair out. I just wait for you to make a video. Film editing - I watched a 40 part horn arranging series done by a guy whose shtick is to set an egg timer for 5 minutes. When it goes off he wraps it up 'cause without it he says he will just go on and on about jazz horn arranging. Most TH-camrs need to edit a LOT:) Your vids are pretty concise and broken up into very useable parts like your series on masking. The fellow who makes the official Reaper videos (Kenny Gioia) went about a decade before we even saw his face. Very well scripted/edited content (although folks complain about his voice). I think most of your viewers would prefer more videos over Hollywood production values so why not keep doing what you have been doing? They have worked great for years!

    • @audio2u
      @audio2u  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for the kind words. I'd love to get more content out the door, believe me. It is all about finding the time to record and edit.
      Which is why I think I will you back to accepting the episodes, because it really did make the editing of this episode so much easier.
      As for Kenny, yeah, his delivery is, shall we say... "Unique"! But he knows his shit, and he covers what you need to know. I think the bit I find the most frustrating is the repetition, but if that helps his views retain the information, then so be it! 😄

    • @audio2u

      But it IS broke, though! The editing takes too long because of the recording process. I'll give it a couple of episodes to ensure that it is in face sitting things up.

      @@audio2u - Ah, sounds like you need the 2 year Motion Picture Production program I took at City College of San Francisco before I started my photo journey - starting with Pre-Production 101:)). I don't know your video workflow but it sounds like you are ending up with far too much footage for a final 15 minute vid and then it takes a long, long time to sift through everything to cut it up and make it one piece. Have you ever considered writing a Book on the subject of Dark Table? It may surprise you, but there are a few out there, the One I have actually has a shout out for your Channel in it.
    The Book in question is relatively recent, and has since aged out with the latest release. I'm sure your Scripting these Videos could be as easily printed in a bound copy, and coming from you? They'd be bound to sell like Hotcakes.

    • @audio2u
      @audio2u  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, I haven't considered that, and for the very reason you cited. The moment a new version of darktable is released (and THAT is every 6 months!!), the book is out of date.
      Sure, SOME features carry over, but too much changes between versions for a book to have any kind of shelf-life.

Sure let us hunt and peck, even a blind squirrel finds a nut philosophy, is like the writers don't mind how we spend our time. Sorry...the dev isn't the correct person to write the manual is a false argument. I've been involved professionally in many projects where the coder provided the tech writer invaluable input into how the software functioned. The tech writer then verified that manual input and corrected as necessary. Before they parted ways, Aurélien Pierre wrote the documentation for his DT modules and I doubt that anyone else would have been capable of writing docs for Filmic without input from Aurélien.
    IMO providing the tech writer input for the manual is part of the devs job. Is it the funnest part of the job...probably not. Is it part of the job...most definitely.
    It's a false argument that the dev cannot write the docs for their modules. At a minimum they need to provide the technical writer with how they designed the module to work. Then the tech writer can put in the finishing touches from there.
