Thats not happening when the audience catered to is literally losers, otakus or loners. Self insert protagonists exist for these type of people. Heck it's rampant in harem stories and romcoms. The best example of what you want are better fpund in those from early comics and novels, its rare to find them in modern media and be even done right.
