Greetings Mr. Keeley - Although I've been a professional architectural photographer and videographer for several decades, I find your channel both educational, inspirational and motivating. I wish you continued success and thank you for sharing your thoughts and insights with everyone.

"Peter McKinnon channel vs Undergrad degree" - I think I would vote for Peter's channel :p

Hi Jonny, interesting video, I hear these negatives all the time, people forget photography involves a life time of learning and progression and above all the craft. On a recent discussion in a photography group... people were going on about the iPhone taking over, lol, thats simply crazy. from a wedding photographer point of view, photography is just one of the many skills required to successfully shoot a wedding. Just imagine that your iPhone was just about able to see the Bride & Groom in a barn during a 4pm December ceremony... they are just about to take their first kiss as husband and wife, and your iphone starts to ring. What a thought! LOL.

It’s so true, and as you will know and iPhone produces a decent image but they have so far to go before the start feeling anywhere near a 50, 85, or 100 macro.
I see so many holiday snaps on Facebook where the focal length is about 20MM but the background is blurred like an 85 1.8 and those people have no idea how unrealistic their images look to a photographer.
Phones are really great but you still have to learn how to snap.

Haha you would just have to put your phone on airplane mode to avoid calls 😄. But don't think I disagree with you, I'm 100% agreeing with what you said.

While I'm all for positive vibes and agree with your later points on how accessible photography is these days. I disagrees with your assessment that there are millions of social media/web content paying jobs out there. In fact its because photography is so accessible more and more small business and individuals are now unwilling to pay for a professional photographer. They would rather go with the cheap and cheerful, have a go themselves, its good enough attitude to content creation for social media. So there is next to no photography market for small businesses, unless it comes to big print media and something they can't do themselves. Instead professional photographers have to aim more at medium to large businesses to make a living. Businesses that are simply too big for one person or a small team to do all the content creation themselves. And then I still see in medium size businesses with a dedicated marketing individual, often preferring to create mediocre content themselves rather than employing a professional photographer. Please don't take this as sour grapes. But rather an objective look at how parts of the photography market have all but disappeared while there are still work in others. It comes down to the one line I once heard another professional photographer say. "No one is going to pay you for a shot that they can get themselves" If you keep that in mind when you choose who to focus your job finding efforts on, then this will save you wasting your time marketing to the wrong people.

I completely understand, and we all have different experience. I still honestly think in general there are opportunities now than ever.
      Appreciate the take mate.

Everyone keeps talking about smartphone cameras becoming better, but that also means the actual full frame and apsc cameras will get better too. Also much of photography isn't just taking sharp images, but having a creative eye and being a good story teller. Some people just aren't interested in that and because of this, photography will still be in demand.

I'm a professional photographer, I use to charge 10k to shoot a wedding and now it's hard to to get 5k with all these new photographers offering packages for under 1k. And guess what! they are offering high quality images- and I'm good! what are your thoughts in this regards?

    • @ItsJonnyKeeley
      @ItsJonnyKeeley  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I understand this, I think it’s simply that cameras are better. For example, I remember with my Canon 5D I used to have to care about light which meant I had to really think about a shot. My A7IV is so good in low light that I don’t even think about it anymore.
That’s just one example of how gear has dropped the barrier to entry. That coupled with the amount of learning resources available to people.
It’s a tough one. I guess that’s the opposite end of this video.

    Interesting video but...
People don’t think they need a professional photographer because they are too arrogant and or ignorant because their iPhone provides what they need and what they want.
It’s like any creative market you need to find your own niche not try to tell people they need a photographer when they can become one themselves.

This is the worst time ever, 100 years ago the Photographer was like a magician, there were few of them and the job could be done by specialist only not every random dumbo with an iPhone

I agree with you Sir. I've just started becoming a photographer as hobbies since the pandemic, and I'm surprised that people keep on calling me to their events and took photos of them. And some of them pays me for their photos. I'm glad I make a right decision to learn and involve in becoming a photographer and videographer. Thank you Sir for this video. 😊🤟🏼

In a small market like Serbia majority of small business still choose to use mobile phone photos to reduce the cost. Or they prefer a professional service on a very low budget. My gear is way too expensive to work for peanuts. But stil, you got some points there ;)

Pick a genre then pick your equipment and start shooting.
